I'm watching the match in a pub and 5 French women made more noise during the singing than the rest of the pub.

Is it time to retire the anthem for something new....in English?

I work with a Polish man and he can't believe how many of us don't know the words to our own anthem. Are other countries more proud than us?

The reason the French women made all the noise was because we are the home team and they were outnumbered so wanted to make a mark - a bit like the way you hear Irish Soccer fans singing louder at away games than at home.

On the anthem, The Soldiers song was orginally written in English by Peadar Kearney and was then translated into Irish - so we already have a bilingual anthem.

An no we shouldn't abandon it.

Its like a wee little opera!

Most Irish people can sing more of the Macarena than the bleeding anthem.

It's embarrassing actually, a mish mash of clichés and faux patriotic nonsense that could be applied to any country.

If we really have to pander to the west brits, I'd rather see a neutral song like "Danny Boy" or something played. Playing two anthems, and disgracefully, only that bastardised anthem away from home is cringe worthy

We should change it to the fields of athenry.

Isn't the Polish one basically something along the lines, of 'if you try that again Germany, we'll fcuk you over good'?

    :)

I believe the second line is "and we keep one eye on sneaky Russia"

Most if not all national anthems are full of faux patriotic nonsense and jingoistic crap. Why should the Irish one be any different or attempt to be more neutral?

Would you or Iwasfrozen have the same complaints about the English anthem?

Spelling the title would probably work in your favour, at least somewhat :P

I don't think we need a new anthem.
I am proud of our national anthem.
I don't think the fact it's in Irish makes a difference as to whether anyone sings it or not. Some people are just damn lazy.

For all intensive purposes it's not a bad old diddly.

I was talking about Irelands Call.

And the English anthem is shocking, it's like something out of medieval times. All centered around one person, the monarch. God save a person who couldn't give two flying fcuks about you or 99% of his/her citizens. It's a real "put you and your kind" in your place sort of thing.

The only other song I could imagine as our National Anthem is Banana Republic by The Boomtown Rats

And where half their population probably dont believe in a God now anyway. Its a farce of an anthem.

The French one is upbeat and can be sung with passion.
Its just a tad extremely violent too!

Ours is a bit lifeless in comparison. It lack a bit of umph!

More or less farcical than an anthem in a language the majority of the population do not speak?

    But yeah, it's still shít.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,088 ✭✭✭SpaceTime

If you ever compare the wording of this preambles of the French and Irish constitutions you'll get a sense of how France was setup on Republican ideals and has a very strong basis in what a modern country should be while ours reads like the preamble to Mass! It's shockingly religious.

We could do with Republic of Ireland 2.0 at this stage. Version 1.1 is still full of bugs and legacy code from the monarchy days.

A catchier anthem would be good too!

The tune is good, the ending in particular is pretty rousing.

Needs English lyrics though so people can sing along.

An anthem has to be catchy and sing along material.

Ireland's Call sounds like the Frog Chorus.

Win or lose, sink or swim
One thing is certain well never give in
Side by side, hand in hand
    We all stand together
Play the game, fight the fight...

    That's it isn't it?

Why should the national anthem of your country be changed 'cause you (and these "others") didnt bothered your arse to learn it?

/someone hand this man some personal responsibility.

Much like anything else, it's about marketing.

If people don't learn it, it's obviously not catchy enough.

You'd find yourself singing this French one without even knowing what the words mean or having any affiliation to France because it's just so catchy.

    The Soldier's Song - Words / Lyrics

    We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
    With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
    The starry heavens o'er us;
    Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Chorus:
    Soldiers are we , whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
    Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
    That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
    The long watched day is breaking;
    The serried ranks of Inisfail
    Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
    Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
    So chant a soldier's song.

Yeah, no violence or medieval attitudes there. The Brits are out there waiting to jump on us...

I know the words of La Marseillaise (because I speak French).

But I also know the Irish anthem, because I am proud to be Irish.

My overall favourites for tunage are the New Zealand and South African anthems.

The French one is even worse..

    Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
    Against us tyranny's
    Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts

To arms citizens Form your battalions
    March, march
    Let impure blood
    Water our furrows

What do they want this horde of slaves
    Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
    For whom these vile chains
    These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
    What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!

    What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
    What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
    Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
    The masters of destiny

    Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
    Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
    Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
    France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you...

And so on for several more verses....
