Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hope you're alright, it was greasy out there this morning.

came off last week (may or may not have involved not clipping out in time). landed on the drive side of the bike and i have an issue. rear derailleur is acting up a bit. it seems like the hanger is bent inwards, and is hitting the spokes when on the lowest ring. sounds heavy when pedalling also, especially when in higher gears. indexing seems fine. any ideas of issue here? is it a case of bending the hanger back out?

Thanks very much. Small fracture a little below elbow unfortunately. No cycling for 4-6 weeks, but really 2 months as I'm away in 6 weeks

I don't mean to sound condescending, or abrupt with this, but I can't think of a better way to say this - if you have to ask what's involved for this, then just take the bike to the shop. Hangers can be straightened, but generally to get that right involves a tool like this, it's not too easily eyeballed, and to be honest if it's bent enough there might be concerns about the strength of the hanger when straightened.

The risks of getting it wrong are at a minimum dodgy shifting, and worst case your rear mech gets sucked into the spokes and you damage the mech, hanger, wheel and maybe even your frame.

First crash today. A car pulled out in front of me as i was flying down a hill in the cycle lane.

Went in to the side of it pretty fast. Hip took most of the impact and I think my head hit the drivers side window.

Got up pretty quick and two people witnessed it who gave me their details. Driver gave me their name, number and insurance details also.

What do I do now? Handlebars look broken and got a small rip in my gabba. Helmet probably needs to be replaced too for peace of mind.

Hopefully the hip isn't too sore tomorrow

You should probably get your injuries checked out. If it does not warrant a trip to casualty maybe a trip to something like VHI Swiftcare today or your GP on Monday. Sometimes injury can take some time to show, and the fact you think you hit your head probably warrants some attention.

Any accident involving personal injury is required to be reported to the Gardaí. I would suggest trying to write as much down about what happened as you can recall and paying a visit to your local station

You should be able to claim against his insurance if the driver was so clearly at fault, and your witnesses should help

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Second what beasty says, due to this weeks experience. If the mater rapid injury clinic is open (smithfield), GP might refer you there if you ask.

It took 12 hours for signs of my concussion to show about 2 years ago, requiring a second trip to the doc

Ditto. Knocked off injuries didn't appear for a day or two after. I regret not reporting it.

Last off was about a year ago, got front wheel caught in a gap in the concrete, kinda rolled off the bike. Bent the hanger. Bit bruised. Got off lightly I reckon.

Took about two months for my ruptured scaphoid ligament to show up in a MRI scan after going over the roof of a van that turned across me. Luckily I hadn't settled with the insurance company as they were being petty about the value of my deceased bike. By the time it went to the Injuries Board, I had had successful reconstruction surgery and got a very good award. Having a Garda at the scene who spoke with witnesses proved critical.

Scaphoid ligament or bone?.. I only ask as I've done my scaphoid bone in a motorbike accident and know how nasty an injury, and surgery it is.

Firat spin out out on the mountain bike this morning, serious craic! Was flying until i came to a rock with a 3 ft drop off into a dip and a bridge built off thw dip side. Missed the bridge and nearly cleared the dip but the front wheel hit a root and sent me over the bars, busted my shin off the bike and left arm is dead after landing on a stump but im hooked now and cant wait to get back out!

Ligament which is why it didn't show up in X-Rays at the time. It holds two other bones (scaphoid?) together and will eventually show up in an X-ray when they start to move apart. The MRI was more conclusive and the surgery wasn't too bad. I must have put my hands out on landing before flipping over on to my back. Common enough according to the staff in the Mater A&E.

Cool. The fracture doesn't show up on the scaphoid for some time too.

Mine was fractured when I was knocked down by a cyclist on Aisling Quay, the little fooker also fracture both my elbows and put me out of work for eleven months

Bleedin' cyclists - broke my leg in 3 places when one knocked me down a while ago. Was out of action for nearer eleven weeks, and needed a walking stick for a few more weeks when I did eventually get back to school....:)

    Sorry to hear that :(

Mine happened when the fecker cycled up the quays against the flow of traffic and knocked me off my motorbike.

Thankfully apart from making a balls of clipping out when I started using cleats first I've never had an accident.. Having said that I've probably cursed myself and get knocked off tomorrow :o

When I say "a while ago", it was actually about 50 years ago....

The most distressing thing was it was the day the school broke up for half-term holidays - I missed the whole of the next half term anyway but my summer holidays were quite boring that year.

Oh, I see. Well mine was shortly before my daughter was born and because I was in casts I wasn't allowed hold my new born daughter.

That was back in the summer of '95.

Always thought you were younger btw, be safe.

This morning, fully aware of ice on the road, I have managed to navigate at least 5 roundabouts and many 90 degree turns no problem... until the last turn into the business park I work in. Went into a sharp corner at 25kph with the obvious result :pac:

Classic spill, skin missing 3x3cm on the knee and 5x5cm on the hip. Gloves and bib tights torn, but repairable :)

That's not eastpoint is it? Worked there myself and the back gate is lethal for coming of the bike even with just a bit of rain.

Writing this from the bus :( , crashed and burned at 8am about 5 mins into my cycle into work , my own stupidity really , came from a main road into a housing estate and never even noticed the conditions, until i took a bend and over i went , knee is grazed and sore , only have the bike a week , managed to Jam the front brakes so had to hobble home and get the bus , need to get the bike sorted now too , FML

Nope, Woodford. No excuses, definitely my fault ;)

Lost it literally at the end of my road, in the housing estate. Front wheel lost grip at the first turn but at the next I went straight onto my left side. Took it very gently the whole way in. Normally average 29km/h but only 21km/h this morning.

No injuries to the bike or myself, just a bruished thigh thankfully!

The only time I've come off was the first time I'd cycled over Sally Gap. Exactly here.

Legs had gone. I'd actually gone past a fella 300m before, thinking I was tremendous, slowed down to a crawl and looked over my shoulder to see where he was, but as I did, I forgot to pedal, came to a stop, and fell into the ditch...

" *chuckle* You allright mate?!" was all I heard as he cycled by.

This morning, coming through James Gate.
My own fault, knew it was a dodgy morning, back wheel gave way on a left hander coming out of my estate, but stayed upright.
And then a right hander in James Gate, slowed down but stupidly hit a shore as I turned, bang, not too bad, bit sore now, but hope to get home without incident.

Cyclists are pretty thin on the ground here in Auckland but I still managed to find one to collide with! Both of us came off our bikes. Fractured my little finger and gave myself a nice deep cut near the elbow. Was hoping to just get it splinted but they put me in a full cast :(

Not a scratch on her or her bike though. She was very apologetic as she had come around from behind a pillar on the wrong side. Haven't fully assessed the bike but left drop bar is pretty well bent in.

This morning heading down the hill into Howth village. Taking it reasonably handy for fear of ice when a driver that had stopped just below the church decided to cross 15m or so in front of me. Hit hard, went over the bonnet and landed on my helmet. Lots of helpers appeared including a nurse and a first aider both of whom insisted I stay lying flat on the road until the ambulance arrived. After four hours in Beaumont A&E, they decided nothing was broken and I wasn't concussed so I was allowed home. The bike didn't seem too bad (or so I was told by a good samaritan cyclist) and is currently being minded in Howth.

Should have included a big thank you to the Fire Brigade (!!) and ambulance crews. Nearly all of them seemed to be keen cyclists and there was much slagging of my Defy Composite as I lay strapped to a board on the ground :)

Checked my Strava and the inclination went from -13% to +21%. I presume that was an "in-flight" reading!

The driver was heading up the hill in Howth village and I was coming down. She indicated to turn right at a junction and I slowed. She then stopped and I went to go ahead. Just before I got to the junction she moved forward and I hit the front corner of the car and came off. Don't want to get into too much detail here as I don't know yet where this is going (see "Garda prosecution of driver" thread).

In a phone conversation today she said she was blinded by the sun and didn't see me.

I suppose they have to say something, but this line is grimly fascinating. It's the equivalent of "I stopped when I saw you coming, but then the sun blinded me, and I couldn't see anything. It was at this point I decided to go for it."

We all know that the only thing that can blot out the power of the sun is a loose fitting fluorescent jacket... And suddenly we're heading towards that other thread (think I'l stop here).

This morning in the phoenix park here: https://goo.gl/maps/GEZAEv168Ky

Road was like an ice rink.

Man on motorbike had gone right over his solid white line up to the edge of the dashed bicycle lane lines.

I'd seen him from well back on the bike lane. I've had 2 falls on ice before and was feeling a heightened need to keep an eye out. I thought he looked to be a dangerous cos he was right at the line but he seemed to be looking around. He didn't move and looked to his left.

I figured, I was safe. Suddenly without looking back he pulls out and looks at the same time. I couldn't brake on the ice. I couldnt keep going straight. Some kind of quick thinking had me lean to fall on my arse and slide on the ice to avoid him.

    "I didn't see ya".

Anyway, will probably be EVEN more paranoid on ice now. My rules will probably be to pick more caution in similar situations.

He might not have looked but I definitely could been more cautious. It's kinda a lesson that's always been there over many many years now. Safety first, then rules/laws etc.

It's been a while but had a spill around 10.40am this morning on Parnell Street (Dublin). A girl ran between two buses and T-boned me just as I passed. She was being pursued by a man. I thought initially she had pick-pocked him and he was giving chase but, on reflection, it may have been drug related. No injuries as such as it was low speed but her head connected with my right cheek. She had a lit cigarette in her mouth - not ideal when you're doing a runner.
