Massdrop on SSDs

Digital Solitude

Basically a Massdrop is where a group of people come together to buy a bulk order of a certain product, and so, it is given at a discount!

I have set up one for Samsung EVO SSDs here so if anyone would like to vote for their preferred size, and follow the thread and I'll let people know how it goes.

Aye. Voted for the 500GB version. How long until it goes ahead, usually? Would be planning on buying it on the 7th, or as soon thereafter as possible.

These are the rough estimates for different countries based on our experience. Please keep in mind that shipping times can be shorter or longer depending on shipping or customs delays.

• Canada: 1-3 weeks from the shipping date
• Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, and UK: 2-4 weeks from the shipping date
• Countries not listed: 3-6 weeks from shipping date

It looks like a US based operation. Customs charges may wipe a chunk off any savings. Also, waiting 2-4 weeks would be a dealbreaker, as I like to get what I order shortly afterwards, but I do intend on seeing how much of a saving there is.

One thing that concerns me; does the manufacture/shop still honour the warranty, or does anything they sell get you one?

The 3 I added are sold from Amazon so they will more than likely hold their warranty, they normally do. It'll probably be about 2 months before anyone will have one of these I suppose. At current rate of going it'll hit 200 votes tomorrow. Maybe a week to sort an offer, a week to buy and then what? 2 weeks to parcel motel

There are there known performance problems with the Samsung EVO SSD. I would not recommend. The Evo Pro don't have the same problems.

cae to share the details? i've got two and not seen any issues so far, but would like to know if there's something i should be looking out for as they have always been highly recommended.

I ve bought twice from Mass drop. Both times the items got stopped at customs and had to pay my fair share of tax plus expenses. If the savings are not massive it's not worth it imo. If a lot of people are interested we can maybe get a grasp of numbers and contact Elara , komplett and dabs if they are interested in a good discount.

put down your username, address, preferred choice and have a list of who wants what. I'd imagine you'd need a decent order to get any sort of discount of them though.

Massdrop always get their stuff sent to their US warehouse so if the savings aren't much we wouldn't be able to do much.

We could go private, and order the SSDs ourselves in the manner you've stated, but it would take a lot of trust I think

In the cycling forum we have done a lot of times group orders with no issues. Using paypal should be safe enough for all parties involved but first a check on the numbers interested buying one might be wise, anything below 30-40 pieces I wouldn't think it would get us any great discounts.

There were and they were fixed by a firmware update. The Samsung 840 EVOs are regarded as the best value (for reliability+performance) SSD out there.

the customs issue with massdrop rules it out for me now, seems pointless with the waiting time vs the savings. I agree that PayPal seems good, we've all been around long enough to know whos who.

Well it can't hurt to find out, we'll just be breaking even if it goes to -25% or so?

I'll happily manage the bulk order myself if it will work out cheaper, or a mod may be willing to help out, I'll email dabs when I get home and see what we could be talking about

Not for everyone. Samsung is investigating issue again apparently.

Here is some details on the 840 Evo's slowing down over time, even with the updated firmware. They found that the drive can slow down to ~35MB/s with the new firmware, which is an order of magnitude lower than the ~500MB/s or more it can do.

Personally, I'd wait for an official update from Samsung before getting one of these.

The problem occurs on data that haven't been accessed on the last 30 days, it's really not a big deal, but I understand the concerns.

Depending on the price, I'd definitely consider a boardsie bulk order.

I'm a heavy Massdrop user. Never once been hit by customs.

It's like anything you order in from outside the EU, sometimes you get away with customs sometimes you don't.

Unfortunate I only saw this now as I bought a new SSD last week, but I've thrown a vote in anyway as I could be tempted to buy another.

What sort of discounts can you expect? I understand each item is different, but say for example an SSD drive. Are you talking 50% discount, or 5% discount?

The 1Tb 850 is 4 votes off the top, so while it may be a little large for some people, that's the trade off as the other to 850s are too far off

Right, I just emailed hardwareversand, who are a German company. If they agree to it, it'll be a roughly 8-10 day turnaround knowing them.

I enquired about 250 and 500gb EVO 850s to keep everyone happy :P They're over 50Eur cheaper than Dabs or Komplett which is why I tried them! I'll keep you updated

If we were to be doing a mass order would we have to decide on one drive/capacity? Im currently looking for a 120Gb bootdrive. If there was a good enough saving id go for a 250GB. The new 850 evo looks pretty class on paper.

More capacity= cheaper Gb/Eur so the savings would be more evident with a larger drive. If it comes to using this I'll set up a google doc and see which people would rather

I have an email address for all potential spammy sites, so when I have to sign up to a site I don't have any particular interest being a member of I use that email address or one of it's linked aliases. I'd trust them about as much as any random site that wants money from me

I recently got my PC from them. They take several days to respond to emails.

Ordered mine only Monday from them Yeah I remember them being slow enough in the past, but we'll have a few days for Massdrop to organise with Amazon to compare the savings from either anyways

Bulk buying would ensure a lower shipping cost, probably, but trusting someone with such capital... not sure.

That was one of the things I had mentioned, there's only a few people on here I'd trust to follow through, and I'd say there's less who would trust me to.
