Yes you do. You should also get the car washed, preferably one that does underneath aswell.

Also, make sure that the nuts are on correctly. one of my friends failed hers because the GARAGE where she got the tyres fitted put one of the nuts on wrong!!!!! :O

also, I'm sure you know yourself but check your lights, even your parking. make sure they all work and that they are set correctly.

Just little things like that but important as they can fail you for them!

you only have to take off the wheel covers if they cover the nuts.

No need to remove the covers then. There is also no need to wash the bottom of the car unless it's absolutely caked in dirt. Still a good wash would do no harm I suppose.

I have to ask. How do you put on wheel nuts wrong?

Cross threading, not tightening them, what?

apparently, from what I gathered from her, one side of the nut is kind of a little narrower, and the threads are kind of on it, and this is the side that should be screwed on first. the guys in the garage put the flat side of the nut on first (but the narrower side should of been closer to the wheel), if you get me??

Ah, got ya. Self tightening/locking nuts.

Put them on the wrong way round. Hard thing to do, but most likely just ran it home with an air gun. It's why you should start a nut by hand and then run it home.

Make sure it's the actual wheel nuts you can see and not the plastic lookalikes some wheel trims have for aesthetic reasons.

Just got the NCT done today and only realised when the car was up on the hoist that I'd forgotten to take the wheel covers off, which cover the whole wheel and the nuts.

Passed and not a word said.

They probably muttered something under their breath but probably decided to be nice about it.

I passed my bct last year but for the alloy covers I have covering the bolts.

I managed to get 3 off but couldnt get the 4th one off

Was just a visual so I drove to the travellers beside the centre and they were able to take it off, went back and passed

bit of a pointless exercise

The place was mad busy and they seemed to be pushing the cars through as fast as possible. If they have targets about backlogs etc. then it wouldn't make sense to fail a car for a non-reason like wheel covers, I mean do they actually test the torque of the nuts? or are they happy so long as a nut isn't missing (although some cars only have 3 anyway) or a wheel is practically falling off.

This thing about testing cars over 10 years old every year really wasn't thought through. Another way (like cc road tax) of punishing people for keeping a good older car running and not being rich enough to buy a new car
