Bout a month left for the movie to come out. After reading the 3 books twice must say will be interesting to see if the movie will be any good. Have seen some of the trailers but still not sure if it will be as good as the books.

anyone thinking of going to see it at all?

I think I might go see it just for the laugh! I think it will be one of those ones that's so bad, it's funny. Are they actually doing a film for each book though!? I would've thought it could all be condensed down into a single film. It's not like there's a whole lot to the books :p

Never read the books (nor do I plan to) but I think I read somewhere that they're toning down the sex a lot for the film so will that leave anything to watch at all?!

Fifty shades of Sh** and good book don't really belong in the same sentence. They were diabolical. I read the first one out of curiousity and a seven year old would write better. I did not read the other two.

Agree that the movie could be so bad it's good.

Think I will give it a miss though.

I haven't been to the cinema in about two years so I am definitely not going to see this one. I would say that if it will be watched, it will be on sky plus or recorded and then with the liberal use of fast forward function. I managed to watch satc 2 in about 10 minutes that way (10 minutes I am never getting back). Anyway I read an extract from book and even with my broken English found it awful, so I never read the books. Does she die in the end? :)

Actually, I never found out how they ended???

But if I were to hazard a guess, after copious amounts of hanky panky, her inner Goddess cured his broken spirit and they all lived happily ever after.

I am sure it will be utterly desperate, so no, I won't be going.

I feel bad for Jamie Dornan tho, hope it's not a career ender for him.

Tried to read my sisters copy for a laugh, couldn't get past the first few pages - dear god what a load of tripe. Like a previous poster said, its so childish and like a 12 year old girls stream of consciousness. Irritated the crap out of me. I'm sure there are plenty of well written erotica novels out there, this is not one of them.

Here is a really funny review of the first book: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/340987215

I read most of the first book to try and get inside the minds of the women reading it. Made it to the last chapter but never finished it or started the other two!

Movie might be worth a watch!

Ah yeah I know, but it sounds like one of these things that might go either way, and therefore could be incredible for your career if it worked out. Think it might go the other way though. Still he wouldn't be the first to recover from a turkey (if that's what it turns out to be!).

I agree, it was knuckle-bitingly bad before it even got to any of the sex stuff. I couldn't get past the first chapter- and I'm not adverse to the odd guilty pleasure low brow novel. It actually makes me despair of humankind to think that something of this calibre is so hugely popular. No interest in the film either.

I read the first book but won't be going. I don't really know what to make of it to be honest. Its a bad story so its not going to make a good film imo so I won't be going for that reason. And its hardly sexy, there is plenty of other good porn or erotica out there that will fit the bill if that's your thing. I think its great though that its out there though. I can't think of any other sexual film that is marketed to a largely female audience and anything that gets more women talking about sex and sexuality without the shame is a good thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

I read the first book but it didn't make me want to read any of the rest of the series (and I am the type of person who has gone out and bought a full series after reading the first book - for other authors). Like someone else said above, I really didn't know what to make of it. I didn't hate it, I did finish it, but I wasn't too sure what I really thought of it after. TBH I think I would be a bit embarrassed at going to see it in the cinema, not in a prudish way but like people think I might need to see it to improve my love life!!

I might wait til it comes on tv (pardon the pun!) and watch it then.

You may have forgotten the first book, but the whole thing is built on women and shame around sexuality. She can't even name her own body parts ffs... it's always "down there" or her inner goddess.

Her shame maybe. I don't think for the millions of women who bought it there was much shame. :D Isn't it great though? I can remember buying my first Nancy Friday book and being morto in Easons handing it to the girl at the checkout. Now we have women openly buying books about sex and not feeling dirty or guilty. The book itself is crap but if its helped make porn and erotica more acceptable then I'm all for it.

This. I read a chapter of it when it came out and, other than it's dire literary quality, remember feeling a mixture of contempt and pity for anyone who could identify sexually with any of it. It's frankly tragic that anyone could find that repressed nonsense in any way erotic.

One that's not even worth BitTorrenting for free...

Wait... Is her inner goddess her vagina? Because that would be really funny.

Awful awful book, couldn't even make it half way through the first book.
Not a chance in hell that i'll see the movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

The sex bits aren't even the worst part. There is a scene where she is out with some mates in a pub, having a smoke outside with a male friend and Grey comes along, uninvited, beats up your man and drags her off without giving her a chance to let her friends know whats happening. She's mad for about 30 seconds then its all okay! That kind of control freak abusive behaviour is what is really wrong with this book not the crappy sex scenes. Hopefully that hasn't been brought to the film version.

I can't remember if the page-long description of him finding a tampon in there used a different euphemism. LOL at the whole thing.

Been drawing comparisons with this story and the billionaire in the news at the moment.

I'll probably watch the movie at some stage though.

I'd actually go see it if it was directed by somebody like Paul Verhoven or David Cronenberg as there is a lot of potential to completely twist the message and turn it into a real dark nasty satire.

    Three words; Lars von Trier.

I hope it has. I haven't read the books, having been advised not to waste my time, but I'd love for the film to be unrelenting in showing the abusive and controlling side so that instead of being a piece of pseudo-romantic pseudo-erotic fluff it is actually a harrowing and direct look at a naïve woman who is preyed on, controlled, and abused by a powerful man. Twould give some load of people a right land to see it done that way.

Irc they spent a fortune for the book rights. The movie will have more in common with Transformers than with von Trier. So anybody looking for a high brow essay on male-female relationships is a tad bit optimistic.

From the sounds of it, a few fighting robots in the film might actually improve it :D

So maybe not a first-date movie?

Jaysus, it'd be a ballsy bloke who'd take someone to 50 Shades on a first date. "So, what'd you think? Interesting, eh? Always fancied myself as a bit of a Mr. Grey..."

50 shades of transformers. I like the sound of that..

    Ha ha ha ha ha!

Wouldn't go if I was paid. I read the first 2 pages of the book, (believe me I didn't buy it) what absolute, undiluted drivel! Really wanted to punch some of the women that I heard raving about how brilliant it was...

Im still rather amused and confused about the fact that they have actually made this a film. I found the book horrific it was terribly written and the two main characters were quite pathetic - a mousy spineless lip biting woman and an overgrown brooding man child who likes to act kinky and pretends to have something deep and meaningful going on upstairs.

Personally I am quite creeped out at the thoughts of what will be going on in a cinema filled with people going to see this mummy porn on screen. I mean if it follows the plot of the book it would be like going to watch soft porn / bravo porn in the cinema?! I didn't think cinema porn was a thing ?!

I mean say if it is what you are into - do you really want to be getting hot and flushed about mr greys manhood in a room full of strangers

    Awful awful book.
Absolutely no interest in seeing the film. Watching someone cutting their toenails would be more erotic, tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 474 ✭✭Candy_Girl

I think it will be a major flop, I certainly wouldn't go paying into the cinema to see it as much as I'd like to see Jamie Dornan naked :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,624 ✭✭✭✭meeeeh

I would say it will be quite successful. They could do some sort of Basic Instinct type of promo, it's probably coming out around Valentine's and so on. There were enough people reading the books to make it a success and it will be still vanilla enough for people not feel embarrassed going to cinema. Anyway if diabolical SATC made enough money to film an even more diabolical sequel, I wouldn't worry.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭shalalala

I am going to see it. I am excited to see how awful it is! I have one of those cinema cards so it'll cost me nothing. I read all the books, again I enjoyed how bad they were and that is pretty much my thoughts on the whole thing!

I do find it pretty bewildering how lots of woman seemingly found it to open their eyes to a certain way of sexual life. But I still enjoy how bad it is

Some friends organized girls get together to watch the first one and I thought it was bad (and I really like high end fashion from design point of view not that I can afford it). I fast forwarded through the second one and had no desire to actually watch it. It was just one big commercial.

Anyway I think I'm just getting old and grumpy because there are very few movies I want to watch. And that includes let's make a cripple biopic to get an Oscar movies.

If they want to do that, they're probably better off ignoring the 50 Shades movie and just getting the DVD of Secretary.

Good post and I bet that's exactly what will happen. It'll be all softened down to widen the audience scope. I expect the makers know it isn't going to be a classic and a lot of people will go to see it just out of curiosity, irregardless of reviews which will be bad anyway.

I just can't separate Dornan from his character in the Fall now. So I'd love if they made it all creepy and weird. He's capable of it!

Also hated the book. Read the first one and it was painful.

This is going to sound really snobby but I found generally the people raving about it hadn't read a book in years; readers were not impressed.

Oh you snobby person you! I found that the people raving about it were thick as s**t, and I'm talking here about people I know well. (family members I'm ashamed to admit). I think they thought they were all cultured because they read a (garbage) book...

Friends were already talking about going to see this way back in September or October. If they go, I will probably go with them but I'm already clenching my teeth at how bad it'll be. Hopefully not as bad as I think.

Considering the millions who read it , mostly women I'm assuming, and the potential benefits in the bedroom with their partners afterwards for both parties, I reckon it'll still do very well! :D

"C'mere love, remember when you read that book and we did *that thing* every night afterwards? Well the film is out now..."

FYI 50SOG rip off mockbuster by the makers of Sharknado is now out in the wild.
The film "Bound" features a very well maintained 44 year old Charisma Carpenter of Angel/Buffy TV series with a very false looking pair and some sort of Jamie Dornan lookalike.
The mockbuster might actually turn out to be better than the Blockbuster.

I think this thread is funny. One of the most popular books ever, and nobody will admit to liking it. I guess it was popular because it brought erotic literature into the mainstream. I would have similar concerns with the dynamics of the relationship and the bad writing, but in general I think it is not a bad thing that this type of book came into the mainstream and people are talking about it. I will watch the film some time unless the reviews are completely awful, as I am curious about it and might even enjoy it, who knows...

Thing is though, there is much better erotic fiction out there, the book was just very well hyped, that's all.
People won't admit to liking something they didn't like.
