    Welcome aboard.

    Is this your first rifle/gun?

There is a world of difference between a .22lr and a .223. One (.22lr) is a rimfire with limited range, killing power, etc. The other a centrefire with much longer range, better capability on larger game, etc.

You would first need to address exactly what you want to shoot, over what distance and in what conditions. So if you were only after rabbits, wanted a quieter gun, and only shot out to 80 yards or so then a .22lr should suit your needs. If you wanted to go after foxes, and other larger game, at distances of 150+ yards then look towards .223, etc.

There are a couple of intermediate calibers, as German Pointer liked to, like the .17hmr or .22 magnum. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. It's very important you choose the right gun as the process for getting a gun can take time and to go through it all to get your gun only to find out it doesn't suit can be really disheartening.
