Al Pacino Vs Robert De Niro: who is the best of the two?

Its has been a 4 decade long debate in the film industry. Who is the better of these two juggernauts of acting?

For me. Pacino just about nudges it. The main reason being that the last decade or so of his career hasnt gone to shiite like Bobby's did. De Niro's agent and manager should both be fired and hang their heads in shame for what they let their client sign up for.

Or maybe De Niro just wants an easy life?

That's my argument for Pacino for the moment but I'll put up a much longer explanation tomorrow as Im pressed for time now.

    So Film lovers.

    This guy

    Or this guy?

At time moment Im split 55% for Pacino and the rest for De Niro, so maybe this thread could sway me.

Please note: no one line answers please. Give us some reasoning behind your choice.

De Niro, just so many great films come to mind. Goodfellas, The Mission, Taxi driver, Raging bull, Godfather, and of course the deer hunter.

I have to struggle to recall Pacino movies

De Niro, Godfather aside he wins by quite a margin.

De Niro's more versatile and has been in better movies.

    Hoo Haa!

De Niro, always. There's something I can't take seriously about Pacino in a helluva lot of his roles.

De Niro hands down. He's performed across different genres aswell.

Pacino has The Godfather, Godfather II, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, Godfather III, Scent of a Woman, Carlitos Way, Heat, Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Any Given Sunday and The Recruit.

De Niro has The Godfather II, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, King of Comedy, Untouchables, Midnight Run, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, Sleepers, Cop Land, Jackie Brown, Ronin, Men of Honour, The Score.
I personally like De Niro in Analyze This and Meet the Parents, I know some people don't thimk he should be doing comedy but he has one of those faces that can pull it off.
He was also excellent in Silver Linings Playbook.

And whoever in camp Pacino thought appearing in Jack and Jill would be a good idea, needs to be shot.

For me, I just seem to enjoy De Niro's films more, so I'm going with him!
Give me Raging Bull over Dog Day Afternoon any day...or any afternoon.

I prefer Pacino but De Niro is by far the superior actor. Simply more versatile.

Sh*t. I dont know if I meant initially for the thread to be for "the best" or "your favourite".

    Hmmm.

De Niro does some awful movies thouhg. I think Pacino is more consitent.

    Wins moderately easily for me.

De Niro for me. Pacino never inspired Bananarama to write a song about him "talkin' Italian". Can't argue with Bananarama.

De Niro, by along way. Pacino is great, but a tad one dimensional.

Pacino was getting hammered in this 2:1 at the start but seems to be on the comeback now.

Hasn't it? I don't know if I've seen anything he's done in the last 10 years apart from Righteous Kill which was awful, so like, what's he done that's been any good? Last thing I've seen DeNiro in was Limitless though

Pacino has had some shiite over recent years but De Niro was king of the easy pay cheque for terrible, terrible films en masse.

Give me Raging Bull over Dog Day Afternoon any day...or any afternoon.

No chance of the art of acting entering into the discussion then.

Raging Bull and DDA have different qualities.

    Both were ground breaking works.

    Pa Niro, for me.
Pa Niro is the king of all the travellers and will bate any man, any time, provided he has time to steep his fists in pedaral an hour beforehand.

People are going to say De Niro is better, but if you look back at each of their back catalogues, it's impossible to choose between the two, certainly if you've actually watched the majority of their films and not just the major ones.

DeNiro for me even though hes done nothing but ****e since around 2000. His legacy will stand to him.
Midnight Run is a great film.

    Seed spawned(known)

    Al Pacino
    three spawn by two females

    De Niro
    6 spawn by 3 females

De Niro has produced TWICE as much spawn as Al Pacino
    clearly a winner

I'm going with De Niro, I don't like the comedy roles of the last 15 years but his early work alongside later stuff such as Goodfellas, Casino and Heat leaves him at legendary status. I still think there is a massive serious role left in the guy... can't wait for him to get back with Scorsese at some stage (if it ever happens).

    'Showgirls'

It's De Niro for me as well, and I echo a previous poster's comments about Pacino being somewhat one-dimensional.

The quotes in the poll are a good example. I know exactly where the De Niro quote comes from, but it feels like I've heard "Hoo! Haa!" in half a dozen Pacino flicks. In fact, I probably have done.

But what on earth is De Niro up to? He's churning out absolute turkeys. It's relentless. Saying that, he obviously loves working, and more power to him. It's just disappointing when you're on the other side of the screen. And he can't even make a comeback, because he'd need to disappear first.

Incidentally, The King of Comedy is turning into my favourite De Niro movie and my favourite Scorsese movie. I used to say that occasionally because it seemed to have become a trendy thing to say. Everyone loves to be part of a misunderstood masterpiece. But I've seen it a few times now and it really is a special piece of work. The ending is one of the greatest moments of satire in all of cinema.

Id love to see either do a HBO Drama.

Or both doing True Detective

Pacino edges it for me for Scent of a Woman and Devils Advocate, De Niro loses big for the awful meet the franchise, I would give him credit for roles such as Men of Honor and his Captain Shakespear in Stardust, loved him in Casino and Goodfellas too, are screw you OP it's too hard to chose ;)

Re HBO I just remembered Pacino did this and this for them.

King of Comedy is the main reason I would go for De Niro - Pacino just wouldn't have the versatility for a role like that - plus he has an awful tendency to overact e.g. Scent of A Woman, Glengarry Glen Ross.

You're in luck, because Pacino's already been in three of them (although one is a two parter, and the others are TV movies). Angels in America, You Don't Know Jack and Phil Spector. The latter received poor to mixed reviews, but the others are worth your time.
