I'm back in the gym this evening after a few days off (was last there on New Years Eve).
Are you guys finding your gym much busier than normal or is there just a few new people buzzing around?

no real difference, if anything maybe slightly quieter still

Due to the over saturation of gyms in Dublin these days, its harder to notice the difference these days compared to other years

Not this morning anyway. Few new faces but mostly the regulars still

Seemed ok when I was in the gym yesterday, but Sunday lunchtime is generally relatively quiet anyway. Swimming tonight and I'm a little worried - this time last year there were 9 people in each medium lane in a 33yd/30m pool, more than a little uncomfortable and difficult to get any solid work done.

Every single morning class and class between 5:30 and 9pm is booked solid at my gym this week though...

Mine doesn't strike me as the type that would be full of new years resolution types, but they sometimes run classes in the morning. This morning it was pretty busy with a HIIT class, but still had plenty of free platforms.

I think mine was a bit busier at lunch. I'll check again throughout the week and look for new faces. I did see a few in for walk-through tours.

Last Fri was my 1st day back since December and it was lovely and quiet.
Tonight I'm expecting it to be a gymocalypse

Guess what comes up when you type in "gym" on Google trends...

my gym is busier but they changed the layout so the men's changing room now has space for two people at a time and only have 4 lockable lockers.

I went this evening, saw a few tours and definitely more people on the cardio machines than normal but nothing crazy.

Slow lanes very busy at the pool, but anything faster was as normal. Pool is having issues with the boiler though and the fact that the water was only 25-26c as a result rather than 28-30 put people off.

One thing I've noticed over the last 6-7 years working in a gym is that while Jan 1st is when resolutions are made its Jan 31st that people get paid so February has always been much busier in my experience.

Tredmills and ellipticals were, weights weren't.

Tredmills and ellipticals were, weights weren't.

Noticed that last year too. Weights seemed to get busier around March, assuming it has something to do with getting bulky for the beach :o

I find the new years surge usually only lasts a couple of weeks and then they taper off,

Bless their hearts because they subsidize cheaper memberships for all of us after all.

I actually disagree strongly. More people join after Jan but a lot seem to stick it out like anyone else that joins a gym.

I don't see what the issue is if you join Jan/Feb or May or Oct? does it make you a better lifter?

how about the people who "train" every year and talk about the gym like experts but are never there as they are injured or too busy being there talking **** to everyone else trying to train?

It was definitely busier yesterday around 4pm not a lot of space in the weights area with it busy .
Saturday was slightly busier not too much maybe most of the New Year crowd started yesterday.

    Yup. Agree with this.

Second half of the month / Start of Feb is always busier.

The gym I go to ( Dublin ) definitely is busier this January than the same week last year. However as someone else says, give them all 6 weeks , then back to normal.

Looks like it won't be getting any busier in my gym. Turns out there's 2 more gyms open/opening this month in sligo.
    That's 3 new gyms in 6 months.

There's one squat rack in my gym so yeah I care if there's gonna be any sudden surge
    Safe so far anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

plemty of gyms to choose from these days

Around 10-15 years ago, a decent gym in Dublin was like gold dust now there is one on every street in similar fashion to internet cafes were a few years back

Once someone pays their membership they are as valued and important to the gym as any of the regulars

I embrace the new gym goers with open arms, never know I could even make a friend or 2

That was my 1 and only worry about January in they gym, people queueing up for the for the rack to get their curls on.

I go at lunch time so I'm pretty much the only one there, so have noticed no difference.

One or two new people being shown around and demonstrating the equipment. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Tiny hike in interest due to New Years.

Mine is a bit busier but that welcomed as it was like a morgue for the past few months.

I take back what I said earlier.

Been seeing advertising for women only gyms and was considering changing to one. Not that I mind mixed gyms. Just there are a lot of posers at times. Was wondering if there was anything in it. Suppose perhaps the availability of certain equipment would be different. Cross-trainers are very popular with women.

Our gym has made a few changes in the past week or 2, no doubt to prepare for the crowds of newbies starting but so far there has been very little new members as far as I can see

maybe people are finally being sensible with their money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 Paddy_PT

Or the january crowds thing is just a myth

When I was a member of the Markievicz, there were a lot of PAYG customers and January/February was a disaster.

BD Sandyford definitely is busier...most cardio machines are full at peak times and I've had a few waits for benches/squat racks the past few days

massive difference this morning, back to normal levels already. surprised so many have fallen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭power pants

I don't and last Monday was bananas in there.

The fact you don't is irrelevant. Many people do is the point.

Last Monday there may have been an influx of new people as it was the first Monday back for most after Christmas.

People tend to start things like this on a Monday.

Having had a week of it, maybe they're finding what suits them better now and Monday doesn't.

    Maybe some work shifts.

I can't believe I bothered with this post.

the ones that are so bothered should maybe think about buying their own equipment

Indeed. I find this thread a tad passive aggressive - like the 'regulars' feel put out.

Truth is, it's not your gym and if someone is paying, regardless of circumstance, they've as much right to a squat rack as anyone else.

So if things like this bother people, then best to get their own equipment. Or try Calisthenics.
