Traditionally the Christmas decorations come down on or after the 6th Jan but there's nothing stopping anyone taking them down whenever they wish. I plan to take my tree down on the 7th.

Some have had them up since Hallowe'en. Why not leave them up til Easter FFS.

You should take it down on Candlemas Eve.

You do know that Candlemas is the 2nd of FEBRUARY??

The 6th is the traditional day.

    Known as "Nollaig na mBan"

Christmas for women. The old idea was that women in Ireland would finally get a much needed rest after catering to everyone during the Christmas. She can rest while the man of the house does the work.

Yes to this. Nollaig na MBan is a brilliant idea. (Even if most women prepare for N na mB by doing all the cooking/baking in advance, so the men just have to heat things up.) Also means, I don't get to take the stuff down :D

Ah the great tree holocaust begins.

Do people actually find a use for them after. Are they any good for the fire? Or would that cause exploding pines and death?

It was always the case that people would take down their tree after the 6th of January, following the twelve days of Christmas . . . .

However, things have changed within the last ten or fifteen years, and of course nowadays the tree goes up, two, three, four, or five weeks before Christmas day, hence people are fed up with the tree & decorations, so they usually come down (in some cases) pretty soon after Christmas day!

The twelve days of Christmas (starting on the 25th/dec) is lost on many.

PS; Happy New Year to y'all.

You shouldn't take down the Christmas decorations until after Nollaig na mBan/Little Christmas 6 January when Christmas officially ends. Thems de rules ;)
    I took mine down today.........

Once New Years day is out the decorations come down and the house gets a full clean. A fresh start with no lingering memories from the previous year...roll on the Spring!

At home it always came down the 6th - there are 12 days of Christmas. Married now with kids and that's how we do it, put it up a week or so before Christmas Eve.

By the same token, there's nothing worse than seeing people with a decorated tree up in the middle of November and it down by NYE. It Poland they don't generally put it up until Christmas Eve and that was the way in Ireland too until apes started getting excited.

After the 25th, Christmas trees just look depressing. Like seeing porn after the **** is over.

Had an uncle who was 86. He took his tree down before January 6th and died six weeks later. Mess with this sh1t are your peril.

We usually take ours down on twelfth night (5th) our daughters birthday is the 6th and and she likes to have all christmas evidence gone by the time it's her birthday. But I took it down today as its more convenient - back in work tomorrow so won't feel like doing it after work.

I'm not superstitious so I'm firmly of the belief that whatever day you do decide to take it down will have absolutely no consequence to your "luck".

I agree, but I've taken it down before that again in the past. I start to twitch if its not down by 28th. After Christmas day the house feels stagnent and there is everything everywhere it doesn't belong. Not to mention all the extra washing and rubbish... I can't wait for everyone's routine to get back to normal

Well know as 'Little Christmas' or 'Ladies Christmas'.
NOLLAIG NA MBAN WOMENS LITTLE CHRISTMAS
In celebration of the feast of the Epiphany in Ireland, January 6th is marked by Nollaig na mBan or Women's Little Christmas.
On this day it is the tradition in Ireland for the women to get together and enjoy their own Christmas, while the men folk stay at home and handle all the chores. It is also common for children to buy their mothers and grandmothers presents on this day, though this custom is gradually being overtaken by Mothers Day.
Although Nollaig na mBan is slowly dying out in many parts of Ireland, in Co. Cork on the South West coast, the tradition is still very strong. Many bars and restaurants in Cork City report a near 100% female clientele on this day, as the Corkonian women meet up with girl friends, sisters, aunts and mothers to celebrate their own little Christmas with Nollaig na mBan.
I think I need to move to Cork or Kerry.. Because Mothers day looks exactly the same as this little christmas thing..

No it's ok - the Feast of Women's Christmas has moved outside of Cork/Kerry in recent years so you can use it as an excuse to celebrate with the Girls anywhere now. ;):D

You need to tell the men in my life that, because they arent hearing the subtle cries for help :o

Dear Santa, I've been so good all year. Could you please find some room in your sleigh next year for a whip :D

Trees down a couple of days now but I always forget the outside lights.

Few years back I bought icicle lights. Sent himself and his mate up two ladders to put them up. They looked great. Few days later the wind picked up and the whole lot of them ended up in the guttering. They stayed there for nearly 3 years ðŸ˜႒

Back to work in morning, and will be late home each eve.

Will many people take it down today?

My mother was always holding for jan 7th , light them for the last time on jan 6th little Christmas she would say.

Ive seen take them down after the 12 days on some forums. I'm all confused, would prefer not to bring bad luck on me at the moment.

Do what you did last year !! Bad luck for taking down the decorations on the wrong day ??? Your logic is impeccable sir !!

Christmas is over, why are the decorations still up.... Sure Tesco stockrooms are full of Easter eggs at the moment, they should be on the shelves shortly.

If I was in a coma and woke up in Tesco I could easily tell you what month it was just by looking at the shelves.
Selection Boxes and time of USA? Its August.
Pancake mix lemons and Cadbury creme eggs? January

I do, traditionally it used to be the day to take down the remaining Christmas decorations. They stopped doing it a while ago though, in and around Victorian times.
