It's been a trainwreck to follow really.

Pat the NES Punk has done some great podcasts on it over the past few weeks, well worth a watch.

They have a ways to go before they catch up with the incredible work being done by Arrow and Masters of Cinema over here recently :)

    Just looked at the list,

Shame they don't have a subscription service although it would make a nice collection.

As long as I get their versions of Days of Heaven and Paths of Glory, I'll be a happy camper.

Odd that they let Molyneux still make games, he's made nothing but forgettable pap now for years.

I know a few of you guys are into vinyl and bought the data discs soundtracks. I've been more and more tempted by the Shenmue vinyl lately and am currently in the process of talking myself into buying it. Does anyone remember how much they ending paying with shipping and the likes?

Also, I'm in the market for a turntable to replace the record player I've been using (just one of those all in one cd, radio, cassette and vinyl players). I'm looking at the Audio Technica LP120 at the minute. Being still fairly new to the whole thing would that be overkill or is there better for less?

Thought he left Lionhead ages ago to set up his own company? The same chap who made that unfinished Godus game and that Cube game/experiment thing that screwed over the young lad who eventually won the prize for reaching the center? Unless I'm mixing him up with some other disaster. :D

Definitely much cheaper than I've seen anywhere else, but I think I'd prefer something new (or at least in better shape). Cheers for the suggestion though!

Pity about the manky adobe illustrator art.

That's been a sore point for me with new 2D games, the amount of god awful illustrator art in games today that looks dirt. The worse thing is they teach that crap to new artists in college, mobile games look like this and are successful therefore people want games that look dreadful.

Yeah, you'd be expecting, after losing 3 lives, to be faced with a screen offering you to continue for a small fee or wait an hour.

even the way they're hyping up the different weapons suggest you'd have to pay to unlock some of them.

I know what you mean - anything which uses Illustrator like that just reminds me of flash based browser games we were playing on the likes of Newgrounds 10-15 years ago. They all look the same.

I think a budget DJ Turntable with a universal headshell, and adjustable counterweight that allows you to not ruin your records would be the way to go.

The High torque of a technics SL-12X0 would be wasted on you, even a pitch fader is unnecessary.

Have you got a hifi with a phono input?
If not you'll need to buy a pre-amp like this one:

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/art_deejaypre_ii.htm?ref=search_rslt_Art+dj_180352_0

Here's the cheapest Direct Drive turntable of them all, only €129 and comes with an audio technica cartridge, it doesnt mention if it comes with a stylus:

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/american_audio_ttd_2400.htm

Cons: Plastic Construction, the dust cover is sold seperately and is meant to be a bitch to install.

    The USB version is €150:
    http://www.thomann.de/ie/american_audio_ttd_2400_usb.htm?ref=prod_rel_193226_1

Stanton do a nice belt drive turntable for £129:

    https://www.decks.co.uk/products/decks/stanton/t52#.Vt74bPT46rU

And comes with their a500 cartridge which is pretty much the standard dj cartridge used for years.

They do a direct drive version for £180

    https://www.decks.co.uk/products/decks/stanton/t62

Those are some cheaper alternatives to the Audio Technica turntables anyway.

I don't have any hifi equipment at the minute, which is why I was looking at the audio technica to hit two birds with one stone and pair it with something like Behringer MS16s to get the ball rolling (but apparently the built in pre-amp isn't fantastic in the audio technica).

Probably wouldn't take much extra effort to add an amp/preamp into the equation though, just me being lazy, ha.

Cheers for the recommendations! I'll definitely give them all a look

Just another quick question. Would you need a receiver/amp along with the preamp in order to use passive speakers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,384 ✭✭✭Doge

    Most definitely,
A pre amp will only boost it from phono level to line level, which isnt strong enough to power passive speakers.

There may also be an impedance mismatch also which wont be good for the speakers.

If youre looking to do it on the cheap an old hifi or amplifier with a "phono" input for a turntable would do the job.

Otherwise these minature amplifiers from china with the T-Amp chips are praised by the audio community for the best bang for buck: (plus a phono preamp like the Art one i linked to)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MUSE-SA50-2-x-68W-T-AMP-Amplifier-TDA7498-EQ-bass-treble-Free-Power-Adapter-BLK/252269757146

And if you have a power supply for a laptop lying around that has the same size DC plug, you could even save more money by ordering one without a power supply!

For anyone following the Coleco Chameleon car crash over the past few weeks it looks to be at an end.

First, Coleco earlier today pulled their name from association with the product and a few hours later Retro VGS shut their Facebook page down and pulled their website. I have no idea how it got so out of hand like it did. Mike Kennedy had a pretty decent reputation before all this but it's pretty shredded now. The 'duct tape' SNES prototype and then the 'capture card' nonsense firmly put it in the grave. It's also caused a bit of a rift between some of the Youtube gaming community, with Pat the NES Punk and gamester81, who are notable Youtube gaming names, at odds with each other over the project.

It's definitely one of the most bizarre, outright disastrous gaming stories of the past few years.

The only good thing to come out of it is that now the Atari Jaguar isn't the biggest failure that was put inside its case!

Pat appears to be expecting everyone who ever associated with the project to prostrate themselves and beg forgiveness for a cheated Retro community, which is unfortunate seeing as no one actually lost any money and expecting Gamester 81, John, to apologise too, when he was just as at odds with the project as everyone else watching, particularly seeing as he was attached at one point.

What age are they again? :pac:
