Is it time for a new National Anthem?

I don't particularly agree with our current anthem since I believe there is more to being Irish than going out to fight Saxons. Do we have any other defining feature besides being oppressed?

I'm indebted to those who laboured, fought and struggled to gain Independence but that's surely not the only facet of 'Irishness', is it?

Do you know the entire words of the song as gaeilge and do you know what they mean in English?

If they could replicate the sound of money being pissed up a wall, I'd vote for that as our new anthem.

They don't have any lyrics. It is instrumental.

You're right OP, we should have an anthem that reflects us fighting vikings and baloobas as well.

No. And if we did, it should also be in Irish.

We should switch the flag to the old fenian harp too, not only would we have a flag with a musical instrument on it, we'd have a flag with a pair of diddies on it too

Take that flags of the world

Should the French stop singing about forming their battalions and letting impure blood water their furrows? Je ne crois pas.

No. And if we did, it should also be in Irish.

The current one was written in English. The Irish version is a translation.

    Absolutely not.
All though I am not a raving nationalist republican etc I am getting tired of how we as a nation are quick to change and bend under the power of politicians, reforms, EU policies.......
Let us hold on to something that is there for years that when we hear it we recognise it as part of our Irish-ness! Whether here in Ireland or abroad!

Although other anthems may sound musically easier on the ear I will never forget the pride in my heart when Katie Taylor won in the Olympics and our Anthem was played!

I love our anthem, it always beings tears to my eyes!

Does it not talk about fighting despots and not Saxons tho? Can only remember the first verse.

While we're at it why don't we just give them a few more counties altogether aswell? Maybe we could all sing God Save the Queen as our new anthem altogther?

It says about Ireland not being home to despot or slave and marching off to meet the Saxon foe tomorrow.

Genius Prizewinner . Btw, if we're to have a new anthem, why not just put newlyrics to that great American hymn, "My country, t'is of thee" Lovely tune!?

I wouldn't mind have Darude - Sandstorm as our national anthem

I think it is really referring to all heavy metal bands, not just Saxon, but most of that genre such as Megadeth and Avenged Sevenfold as well. The RA hate Heavy metal.

I can only see one mention of the word 'Saxon' in the English version, but it doesn't seem to appear in the Irish version (which is the only one ever sung). Not that my Irish is great, but I can't see any particular foe named in the last verse. Maybe it was made a bit more PC on translation? "Gall" means foreigner I think.

For someone who starts a whole thread about our anthem, I'd have thought you'd know anything about it.

Amhrán na bhFiann is the name of the song which consists of 3 verses and a chorus. The chorus, and only the chorus is our national anthem. Can you point out where in the chorus (and hence in our national anthem) Saxons are mentioned?

Even if you were to push it and say "its the same song, the sentiment is the same". The Anthem is officially the Irish version, which still has no mentions of Saxons. The line people like yourself love to quote (which isnt even part of the Anthem) is in the 3rd verse near the end: "Out yonder waits the Saxon foe". That same line in the Irish version is "Is an bíobha i raon na bpiléar agaibh". Which as far as I can see translates to "and the enemy is within range of your bullets".

I think it's grand. Though if the lyrics offend people then maybe we can change it. How about just an instrumental anthem, may as well keep the current one, and instead of signing we can all just hum along. Sound good?

"Gall" (pronounced 'gowl') is a foreigner but it is very unlikely they were speaking of all foreigners and not just British. No other foreign Nation tried to rule Ireland.

No. Its a fine anthem. Are the Americans ashamed of fighting the British ??? Seems like a lot of Irish are ashamed that we had to fight for our freedom !!

This should be our national anthem:

If we ditched the dull intro verse and just kept the chorus, the song below would get my vote. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but I think they sum up Ireland's history and give us a great positive message for the future.
