agree... go for it, you can always dial back on the day depending on how you are feeling...

A lot of people on here will tell you the Garmin is only good as a stopwatch on that kind is session, as 400 reps are too short to get good average distance and pace readings out of the watch. So it's a good idea to have premeasured your 400, as you did, just hitting the lap button to record the splits. Great session!

Sounds like your head is in good racing form, if you're ok physically I'd be tempted to go for it ;)

Thanks ladies! I'm on a bit of a buzz now after that session so the plan will be to start with the 35 pacer and abandon if/when necessary.

Yup I had head that before all right, so got the gmaps out beforehand and measured from the wooden bridge back to the second green shelter along the grass path as 400m. Just as well  I don't think it's possible on the lap function to get current pace anyway, just average (Forerunner 10). Would that be right ?

Delighted with the session, thanks. Looks like you're on for a great 26.2 in a few weeks, everything seems to be coming together nicely.

it will display your current pace as you are running, when you look a your splits though that's an average pace per lap. When you upload to garmin connect () that's where the fun bit starts and you can see your fastest pace per lap. But as murph says over those short distances they're less accurate.

I think you can turn off/disable the GPS for the shorter reps and the splits become more accurate, especially if you are running on a track.

Thanks RR. I think I wouldn't bother with a Garmin on the track seeing as the distance is a given. And, as I realised last night, it seems you're better off just concentrating on running the shorter intervals than getting pace readings that are continually changing. Once I master Garmin Connect though I'll probably be all about the stats retrospectively and patting myself on the back for holding 6 min mile pace for 2 seconds

No need to turn off the gps surely - just hit the lap button every time at end of every lap and you have your split per 400, regardless of how the gps measured it.

You would think so but I think the inaccuracies stems from when you hit the start button and there being a slight delay. Am pretty sure someone on here(maybe Krusty) suggested this on another log once. I've noticed it myself where the coach was calling splits but when I checked on Garmin later it was different lap times by sometimes over a second. Having said that I haven't tried it myself yet (with GPS off).

Anyways as already pointed out the effort is probably whats key

It would be nice to be so fast that a second per lap mattered but alas.....:o

Looks like I won't be throwing out my trusty stopwatch just yet!

    Friday

Just an easy run today after Pilates and Body Balance. Forgot to charge the Garmin and had no watch so reverted back to Strava on the phone.
    • 4 miles (mainly grass) (34:30)

Busy day tomorrow so hoping to get a short run and some strides in as prep for Sunday. Plan for Terenure is to go with the sub 35 pacer and hang on for dear life. Really not at all sure how it's going to go. On the one hand I've had more or less uninterrupted training since the 35:06 in Raheny in January. Terenure is flatter, there are pacers and conditions look likely to be ok if a bit breezy. On the other hand the FlAbs may rear its ugly head again in which case it'll be game over. I also feel like I was a bit fitter and leaner in January. Will just have to see how it goes. The world won't end and there are plenty more 5 milers. But it would be awesome........

You're right to give it a good old shot. Best of!

If your injury doesn't flare up I'd say you'll easily go sub-35. Don't worry too much about following the pacers, maybe run conservative for the first lap and if feeling good push on the second time down by bushy park.

Keep something for the finishing straight though, deceptively, if slight, uphill.

    Best of luck.

Thanks Ososlo! I was in two minds about it but I know I'd regret it if I didn't at least get to the start line.

You can run with me as I'm not going sub 35 but hoping for a good run anyway?

Thanks AQ. I'm thinking all or nothing for me on this one because I came so close in Raheny. I will probably regret it and end up in a heap at the side of the road, but nothing ventured....

Thanks Adrian. Appreciate the advice. I'm guessing it's more K-Club uphill than Raheny  uphill ?

hellloooo..... sure if you're running with BG, you might go sub 35 by accident... :p

Only if Meno agrees to carry me which is unlikely. BG much lighter.

Yeah, not a hill really, more of slight incline but when you are sprinting for the finishline it's good to know it's there.

Sure she can always go slum it with us at her easy pace!!

Think you're right to give this a shot BG, if it acts up just pull back and as you say plenty more others out there down the road.

Strava just emailed me the following:

"Uh oh! Zoe Quinn just stole your CR!

You just lost your CR on Howth summit to Zoe Quinn by 6s.

Now get out there, have fun and be safe.
    — Your friends at Strava"

Didn't even know I had a CR on Howth summit. Is it wrong to want to get in the car straight away and drive to Howth to reclaim it ;) ??

Haha not wrong at all to want it...maybe a little bit wrong to actually go do it ;):D. See you Sunday :)

What's CR? Crown? Have enough gadgets so not involved in strava.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,398 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Course record on a "segment". Fun feature but I've never been close to a CR.

But she stole my crown! (that I didn't know I had admittedly. But STILL!)

I suspect the only reason I have had this one is because it's a part of the summit that everyone avoids due to being extra steep.
