    Tuesday

    Meh.

Wednesday (Meet & Train summer league Round 1. Griffeen Park, Lucan. 5K)

    Bleurgh.

Wind, rain and hailstones and a twisty course. I knew this wasn’t going to be pretty but all the indulgences of last week and the recent absence of any serious core work came back to bite me on the a$$ tonight. First lap was ok, but got horrible ab pain on the 2nd lap (happens when my abs go flabby :o and it’s like someone sticking a knife in ) that meant my form went to pot and I was just hanging on by a thread for the sake of the team. 20th place, don’t know (don’t care!) what time as didn’t wear a watch.

Speaking of watches, and happier news, I took delivery of my fab pre-loved Garmin from FD which is in mint condition still in its box. I am just admiring it, from a distance for now, and will take it for a test run on Friday. So excited. Thank you FD :)!
    • 5.4 miles total incl 5K race

Rest day tomorrow. Well needed at this stage, I think it has been 8 days on the trot since the last one. So I’ll tie up April now with my not so fancy but functional table.

    Month 2015 2014 2013
    January 101 86 0
    February 109 75 0
    March 124 109 0
    April 129 101 24
    May 95 81
    June 86 72
    July 2 101
    August 31 37
    September 83 43
    October 93 64
    November 107 69
    December 119 94
    463 987 585

Just looking at the goals I set at the start of this log. It’s 4 months into the year and while I haven’t made it onto The Table yet I’m getting closer, the mileage is building nicely and fingers crossed I’ve been more or less injury free too. 2 PBs so far this year (1 mile and 5 miles), actually 3 if you count the moral PB that was the K-Club 10K ;). Just need to be more mindful of my core work, I do fall apart at the seams without it so need to make it a priority from now on.

Right, I think I’m the last man standing. Bedtime!

Well done on your 20th place! It was just a gack night :) I'm with you on the core, my strength sessions have gone to pot, there are just not enough hours in the day sometimes..look forward to seeing lots of Garmin stats on your log now :-D

Definitely a character building run BG by the sounds of it! Nice table, you are building very nicely (and sensibly!). Looking forward to seeing it all pay off...well, even more than 3 PBs so far this year!!

Well done on toughing out the 5k BG, I'd be blaming the weather more than anything though! Impressive table there alright, can't wait to see what you can do when the weather settles :D

How did you manage to finish 2014 with 987 miles? Surely you could have done a 13 mile run on NYE or something?

WD on toughing out the 5K, will stand to you just as much if not more than a good run over the distance...

Thanks Runchick, it's odd that I have no problem with wind and rain during XC season (embrace it even!) but I have serious objections (down with this sort of thing!) during road races

LOL Adrian, I didn't even notice that until I started compiling the table a couple of months ago. And strangely enough it didn't even bother me. That's bound to change now that I have taken ownership of my new Garmin. OCD alert!

Yup I hope it was worth the wind and hailstones (& the resulting trip to the physio tomorrow to sort out my battered abs :(). But it always feels bad ass, if not the most sensible, to battle to the end rather than wimp out :)

    Friday
Having busted a gut, almost literally , on Wednesday in that 5K, Thursday was a welcome rest day, although I was still in a lot of pain. Got an appointment with the physical therapist today but went to Pilates and Body Balance first to assess the damage and, like I expected, the abs felt a bit better after the classes, supporting my theory of flabby holiday abs causing the pain :o. PT did a lot of work on the abs, right hip flexor, left adductor and a bit on the right oblique. It’s as pleasant as it sounds having someone poke in and around your guts but it usually does the trick so fingers crossed that’s sorted. Will ice today and hopefully get out for a test run tomorrow to see if Tallaght’s still on the cards. Volunteered myself and BG Jr for parkrun tomorrow before looking at the weather forecast, yikes ! Umbrellas and wellies all round I think.

Hope you've dried out/warmed up after this morning
I am a bad log-mate (also too lazy tired to check back)...are you doing the 5k tomorrow or saving yourself for Terenure?

That's ok. You can be as lazy tired as you like seeing as you're County Champ ;). In fact it's probably recommended :D

Abs still not quite right so not going to risk any further damage by pushing it today. Raging though, weather looks perfect now . Just going to Pilates then a nice easy long run.

Ah best decision if in doubt, well done. Enjoy the rest of the day. That's the beauty of 5ks isn't it? There's always another one.

I do an off road loop that is 1 mile give or take. I'll put up a gmaps link later when I'm back on the laptop.

Would be brilliant. In the middle of my c25k journey at the moment. Try to plan my route based on previous pace. It works well for roads, less so for parks, from what I can tell.

    Saturday (Test Run)
After a good soaking while volunteering at St. Anne’s parkrun (BG Jr. had the good sense to refuse to put on her Hi-Viz and come with) I wasn’t looking forward to going out to test the abs. Normally after an enforced layoff (this was just one day admittedly ) I’d be chomping at the bit to get out but I was a bit nervous of doing further damage so kept on putting if off. And it was raining like the apocalypse. Forced myself out the door around 6pm and it was grand! Kept it easy and was aware of a certain discomfort, possibly from the treatment as much as the injury, but nothing serious. Felt good to get out.

Knew Tallaght 5K wasn’t going to happen though. Too much of a risk with the Terenure 5 only a couple of weeks away, plus the next round of Meet & Train league next weekend. Have to laugh when I think of the target I set for Tallaght (20:45). I will file that one under What Was I Thinking, and move swiftly on……..:o
    • 3 miles (25:45)

    Sunday (LSR)
Pilates class, then straight into a long run with no clue of route, just a time goal of 95 minutes. Headed towards St.Anne’s then did the full Raheny 5 route, then cut through the park via the main avenue and back down the Howth Road and through Marino to make up the time. Abs felt fine mostly, just a little discomfort towards the end when I was getting tired. All good.

So much fun reading all the race reports today, well done to everyone who raced.

I'm a disaster FD, and I've no excuse, apart from being a technophobe. I know once I start using it I'll be addicted and it'll be stat city :D

See you Sunday! (BTW the results from Weds are up on the M&T blog)

I have looked around a bit to see what will be on, by the time I am hoping to be finished my c25k. Considering anything within Dublin. I think by the time I am finished, the only that will meets the brief in the short term will be http://sonia5k.ie/
It is going to be for me a question of being able to run uninterrupted for the duration of the race, before I will compete in one. I think I will do a few park runs in the coming weeks.

Forecast is for wind but no rain . If it's the same route as last year about half of it's on the grass, tell your team to bring their wellies, I reckon it'll be a mudbath after all this rain!

balls :D and half grass is useless because we can't use spikes (I'm getting my excuses in early..) what park is it in again?

It's cherryfield park. Actually a really nice route but yeah not suitable for spikes. Not sure if they have a Tarmac only route. They do have cake though:D

    Monday – Random Run
Spent most of the day at the funfair in St.Anne’s spinning around in the Teacups and being grifted by the proprietor of a stall offering the opportunity to fish for plastic ducks . Needed a run after that so headed out to the Wooden Bridge and back. Abs bothering me a bit still.
    • 60:00 – 6.8 miles

    Tuesday – Double Day!
It’s getting to the stage now where I won’t have the time to fit in the required miles unless I start doing doubles. I feel like a professional, lol.
    • 29:00 (3.2 miles) a.m. + 24:00 (2.6 miles) p.m.

More physical therapy required this evening (was lucky to get a cancellation appointment once I realised the abs/diaphragm issue was not going to go away by itself). My PT did a lot of excruciatingly painful work just under the rib cage. I had this issue before a few years ago, but thought I had finally whipped its butt with all the Pilates. Under strict instructions now to ice, rest up (except for Pilates) and see how it is on Friday with a test run. I was feeling very sorry for myself until I realised:
    1. I beat this before, so I will do it again
    2. If I can’t do the Terenure 5, there are other 5 mile races (this was an epiphany!)
    3. There are a lot worse injuries I could have
    4. I should stop being a moany Minnie and use the time off to get to know my new Garmin

Really frustrated for you! What triggered it a few years ago? Is it related to your back issues? Was it really triggered this time by a few days holiday relaxation?!  I'm just having images of you doing crunches at age 93.2 for fear of flabby ab syndrome :D

Yup, long term plan is to be a Pilates über-champion in the 90-95 age group;).

The trigger has always been intense exercise, so either a tough session or a race. The cause (I think) originally was very weak abs combined with poor posture/form and a general lack of strength & conditioning. Took ages (and cost a fortune with x-rays, specialists etc.) to be told there was nothing visibly wrong. Then a friend recommended my current PT who is very hands on and over several sessions was able to ease out the tension lurking deep under the rib cage . I started S&C training and Pilates and toned up a good bit. My times really started to improve then because I was finally able to push harder in races without any pain. It pops up occasionally now during a race but I can usually manage it by slowing down and deep breathing and that’ll be the end of it. The issue now is I pushed through like a big eejit during Wednesday’s race instead of easing off (I should probably stop doing team races ) and caused a proper flare up.

I think the flabby holiday abs set off a chain reaction along the lines of: flabby abs + extra holiday pounds = poor posture + compromised form + silly competitiveness = flare up.

You’re probably sorry you asked now. But thanks for asking :)

I had just been thinking enviously (coughs/reflux back again and I actually got packed off home by one of the intervals group when he saw me coughing on my way to intervals yesterday eve :( ) that you were so lucky never seeming to have layoffs .....

Hope it won't be too long off the roads :(.

Thanks Hilly, and sorry to hear that. I'll be grand, just having me a little rant. And seriously thinking about never going on holidays again ;). True, I've been very lucky the last couple of years and there isn't a day goes by when I'm not grateful to wake up in one piece :D

Really hope you feel better soon and get a good stretch of training in.
