Does 'Lad Culture' apply to camp people leering over other lads, and making lewd offensive jokes about them, or is it only towards women?

So what exactly is lad culture and what is the problem with it?

The Guardian, the BBC, magazines, an awful lot of TV programmes, advertising, etc...

    But that's acceptable?

There is nothing to be ashamed of for being part of the majority of people; straight, financially comfortable, into sports, enjoys alcohol. Let the boys play, it may be silly or reckless but if it doesn't harm anyone then there is no legitimate issue.

This thread was started by a man. Most contributions are by men. A few weeks ago, women were complaining about misogyny on boards and you came on all guns blazing demanding examples not willing to listen to anyone.

You have serious issues. You're not the only one on Boards though.

    Fcuk this ****.

If you have to resort to ad hominem attacks, frankly you're not worth my time, you've already lost.

Might I suggest a glass of water. See you in your next reincarnation.

Do you regularly watch TV or read newspapers?

I always associate the whole "lad culture" thing with boorish idiots whose voices drop several octaves whenever they're in the presence of "the lads". It's always funny when you hear them talking to their mammies.

I thought that was what terms like lad culture did? :)

I was expecting actual examples not just- them overthere

Asked a question, but you participate in it?

No its describing a behaviour trait, where is a wide enough correlation to justify it.

No. I respect men. I've never made jokes about raping them or as a prize.

Keep wondering, that poster criticised feminists, not women.

    hello brand new poster!

Ok then, notice how men in popular almost always seem to me sleazy, stupid or both? Any modern US sitcom evinces this and I'll cite the entire male cast of characters of Big Bang Theory as an example. The likes of Jessica Valenti and Una Mullally regularly spout the kind of bile that sends men off to the likes of Paul Elam.

Can you clarify when you think it's on to generalise and when it isn't?

see the second part of my post newbie.

they don't come across as stupid. Only Walawitz (sp) is sleazy imho and that is explained as insecurity.

In most sitcoms, the main characters are all men. The comedy always stems from the characters' personality flaws. While it's true that men in sitcoms are usually portrayed as flawed, stupid, sleazy, deluded, etc, it's not the result of any inherent bias against men.

Well, one of the characters can't even speak to women unless plastered, one struggles with even the most basic of interactions. Leonard seems at least somewhat believable while the other 3 are little more than caricatures.

Its not attacking all men, its attacking the "lad culture"

Is lad culture actually all that harmful though?Like if we are going to look at Geordie Shore etc seriously we don't see any thing thats really new or shocking behaviour from the "lads" apart from their body culture, its the laddette culture thats something new(ish).
The whole lad culture thing is annoying lowest common denominator sh^te but its the same thing thats been going on forever, its easy enough to avoid that scene if you want too.

That's by your convenient definition of lad culture. You've plenty of posts objectifying footballers, I'd consider men doing the same to women one of the big traits of lad culture.

Lad culture can be easily defined by your friends that read Joe.ie, like Dapper Laughs or other equally terrible entities (Ladbible etc)

It's the double standard at play which infuriates me. If women objectify men, it's fine. If a man comments on a woman's appearance, it's misogyny.

Saying I find Olivier Giroud attractive? I would not consider guys expressing an interest in ladies to be laddish, unless there is a use of derogatory words and references to forcing themselves on them.
