what do you make of the whole 'lad culture' phenomenon? is this a thing that goes on in boards as well as real life? is laddishness a harmless thing or does it delve too much into sexism and misogyny? it originates from England but has this become an aspect of irish culture as well??

Can you give me an example of what you are talking about.

As far as I'm concerned the term "lad culture" is just another way for modern society to demonize young men for behaving like young men. Groups of young women behave exactly the same way and don't get slammed for it.

I for one am utterly fed up of hearing about it.

Lad culture grew beyond men's magazines to movies such as Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and to the TV sitcoms, Men Behaving Badly and Game On, The Inbetweeners and Fantasy Football League and male pastimes of drinking, watching football, and sex.

It's just another bull**** term used to pigeonhole people based on their interests. Can't do or say anything these days without being conveniently labelled for it so that it's easy for others to attack and criticise you.

If 'lad culture' is defined by the likes of 'The only way is Essex', 'Geordie Shore' or 'Boozed up X abroad' shows, I for one have no part to identify with this so called culture.

The weird thing is, those shows are mainly watched by women

And feature women as some of the most prominent cast members.

I'd rather lob my lad off with a blunt knife than watch Geordie Shore.

But you need to know about the GTL if your DTF!
It makes me so sad I know what that means :(

How many people complained when 'Girl Power' et al came around? None.

But hey, let's start the male bashing threads again, it's starting to become an all too common occurrence in AH.

Both Lad culture & Girl power began around the same time; mid 90's.

    jack the lad

An irresponsible young man, seeking personal pleasure without regard to responsibilities. A rogue. You seem to think you're a bit of a jack the lad, don't you?

If lad culture is just men having certain interests/pastimes etc. and being proud of it (like Girl Power) then I don't think there's anything wrong with promoting it.

However if lad culture is the kind of behaviour and attitude I've seen on my facebook feed from sites like UniLad and the Lad Bible, then yes I think it's very harmful to encourage that sort of thinking. It's not "male bashing" to speak up against it, because I'm sure that most reasonable males wouldn't buy into that sort of ignorant crap.

Pretty sure "lad culture" is pretty much a english thing. At least it used to be.

Lad culture makes me vomit. That "rape" comedian and Ladbrokes ad are the epitomy of it. Men as a gender have far better things to offer to show off its positive traits

"Lad culture" as it was defined in the '90s was just a case of putting a label on what young men have always done: drink, like sports, and act the maggot.

But if it's now associated with fedora-wearing lunks with inferiority complexes then ban it now.

A fedora is the hunkiest hat.

    Apart from a Trilby.

    And a Fez.

Since lad culture makes you vomit, I would be interested to hear your definition of it.

    Lad culture......whaaaa?

This is the first I've heard it.

Because shows like Geordie/Jersey shore are a true reflection on how young men/women behave.

You hear the term used on those programmes where they follow the police about at pub closing time. Never hear it used anywhere else.

You know the mundane, blasé and basically ****ing harmless way lots of young lads have always liked to drink a little too much and chase after girls and make stupid jokes the way young lads do 'cause they're young lads and still trying to wrap their heads round being adults? Yeah, well suddenly it's the epitome of the fall of western society. Run for the hills and bring your women with you lest they get raped and murdered by this brand new and horrifying scourge.

That's strange because the entire culture was essentially constructed and lionized by magazines like Loaded that were largely aimed at - and largely staffed by - men.

Ah, 'Lad Mags', I had heard it somewhere else. Aren't they an endangered species now? Like any other glossy magazine aimed at people young enough to have no excuse for not knowing how to use the internet.

Not much to refute. That "article" is just an attempt to paint men out to be drunken louts with nothing positive to contribute to society. Y,know, because we're all one homogeneous population.

Two-thirds had heard rape or sexual assault jokes on campuses.

They're idiots, noone is disputing that but they don't speak for or represent men as a whole. It's crap like this that leads to censorship and other draconian nonsense.
