    What's active aero?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,551 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Rear spoiler that moves at certain speeds to assist downforce afaik. The old Corrado used to have one integrated into the boot lip along with alot of performance cars. Not sure how it would work on the Golf though as the rear spoiler is located at the top of the hatch.

    It's now
    GTI
GTI with bodykit and more power (Clubsport)
GTI with bodykit, active aero and more power (Clubsport Ed. 40)
GTI with bodykit, active aero, no rear seats and even more power (Clubsport S)

Not sure if serious? Where did you get that info? I've never heard of "active aero" on any Golf.

To the best of my knowledge it's:
    GTI 220
GTI Clubsport 265 (290 with boost)
GTI Clubsport-S (very limited edition and unlikely to be available at all in Ireland).

Yep, I misread something. They made aero changes that only come into effect above a certain speed. I had misread an article that had lead me to believe it actually changes the aero, rather than it only becoming effective at certain speeds. And the Edition 40 bit is literally a badge.

Yeah that huge spoiler they've tacked onto the back of the Clubsport is supposedly not just a cosmetic thing...

I saw this posted elsewhere... a guy in Belgium took delivery of his Clubsport but didn't realise that xenons aren't standard in Belgium! A "Clubsport" with poxy halogen headlights...

That's mental about the candles in a premium car like that. They can't even claim it's weight saving like no air con or something. I think that's typical of the belgium market though, I believe it is because of a heavy tax regime that everything there is optional.

That steering wheel is very nice.

They really are lovely - I've had the steering wheels in my M3 and WRX retrimmed with extra padding by Royal Steering wheels in the UK - reasonable enough price if I recall around 120 euro. I might get the Mk7's wheel done at some stage.

I've yet to send my mk2 golf steering wheel to them, I was going to go with alcantara but may stick with napa leather now.

Tornado Red Clubsport due in Cork In the next couple of days. I am waiting on one which is in the docks in Germany at the moment waiting to be shipped. Ordered mine in Pure White 3/Door, standard 18" Belvedere wheels, DCC, Panoramic Sunroof, Sat Nav Pro and Dynaudio.

Lovely. You didn't spec the bucket seats?

Post some pics when you get it!

Very nice, has it got xenons? Joe posted a link earlier to a clubsport that didn't have xenons.

That was a Belgium car Neil. Irish cars have the xenons.

As stated previous Irish GTI's/Clubsports/R come with zenon's as standard. In reply to Joe I didn't spec the bucket seats because I wasn't happy with the trade-off whereas when ordering the buckets you lose the centre armrest the rear heater/vents, cup holder sliding blind, storage beneath the seats and back, easy entry and side airbag, also I know there are issues with the buckets where customers in Germany are complaining of rattles and creaking noise coming from them and in the UK where they are only now getting their orders one owner already has posted in a forum over there that his seats are making this creaking noise. I know the buckets look the part but for €2043 extra for them I felt they were not worth it considering the trade-off and reported issues and besides imo the standard seats are quiet supportive and match the rest of the interior perhaps better.

The bucket seats make the arm rest redundant anyway the are too deep. I am thinking of taking the arm rest out of my car (S3) and selling it. Haven't used it once.

Well wear with the Clubsport can't wait to see pics of it.

Has anyone noticed that the auto lights are on a lot in my car, low beams, has anyone else noticed this? I had a mk5 with auto lights and they only really came on at dusk or heavy rain. In the GTD they are on even when it's quite bright sometimes,

Can't say I have but there is a setting for them in the radio menus - Early / Medium / Late. Maybe try changing that and see what happens.

Is that for the auto lights, I thought that was for the auto dip function??

    No, definitely the auto lights.
I guess also make sure your windscreen is relatively clean and the sensor area hasn't anything obstructing it - I.e. Stickers, toll tags thingys, whatever.

Ok, I have that set to early, I'll switch to late, thanks Joe,

I need 2 front tyres for the GTD folks

    1) Uniroyal rainsport - €160
    2) Pirelli - €180
    3) Bridgestone €170

they recommended Uniroyal given we are coming into the winter months.. what ya think? Any recommendations?

The uniroyals do get great reviews as regards winter driving. Can i also suggest cooper zeon sports? Fitted them to my mk6 gti last year and they have been brilliant so far. Quieter than the continental sport contacts i had on before them. Paid around 155 euro i think (18's)... with rim protection

Never had performance drop off so quickly as I did with the Rainsport 3s I had on the Mk5 GTI before I traded it in. Think they were about 6k km in before there was a marked drop off in grip.

    what do ya recommend?

Dunlop Sport Maxx currently have them fitted 14.5km later and still a good bit of thread remaining.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport never used them but get good reviews.

What size ? You'd get F1's and PS'3 for cheaper than those in 225/40/18 and 235/40/18 and either would be a big jump in quality.

Those prices seem high to me, try Keith in alloy wheels.ie. Michelin PS 4 were 144 each in June.
That's a discounted price for members on autostadt.ie

I put Uniroyals on the R. They're grand but it's my missus that drives it mostly so she hasn't been ragging it. I'd classify as mid range.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 3's. Should be cheaper than all of the above and once you have them once ,you'll never go back. :P

I changed this setting to late and today after work around 5:30 the full lights were on and it was very bright. In my Mk5 the lights only came on if it was quite dark, are the light sensors just set different now or what. I have checked the screen and there is nothing there.

Put Eagle F1s on the front of the VRS when the factory Bridgestones were shot and can't complain. 15k km later and there's still over half thread left (Bridgestones only managed 19k km with a swap half way through) despite being on the front, no issues with traction unless acting the complete maggot. A lot quieter too. Seem to suit the diesel power delivery better than anything I've used previously.

€135 a pop for the 2's, the 3's weren't in stock yet when I changed but 4 will be going on next swap.

Are you sure the dipped beams are coming on and it's not just the dashboard illumination (which comes on/off independently).?
