    Hey all,

Wondering if there are any gyms near Gleann Dara? At the moment I am using the Kingfisher in NUIG but they only do membership for a full year which is no good to me so I'm wondernig if there are any closer gyms around where I live. Don't have a car so would need to be walking distance.

    Thanks

    Ocean fitness in Salthill Hotel.
    NRG in Clyboan Hotel.
Might be a few more but those two spring to my mind.

There's also the ardilaun which is not too far from you.

Thanks, I think some of the hotels might be out of my price range but I'll ring around and see anyway.
Will try that offer too, cheers

Hey, just new here, I wanted to ask could anyone tell me are there any good gyms (good free weight selection) within walking distance from Eyre Square in Galway city.

If anyone knows of one with good membership rates, thanks.

Hey there I joined Planet Fitness beside Tesco at the Headford Road last week, Only 25 euro a month and is more or less pay as you go . You can quit at anytime.
Seems to have a good weights section. It's a little dreary looking but has everything you need. The place stinks though lol.

Anyone know what's the story with the Dangan sports grounds gym? It closed down before the new year in order to extend the room. I was down there sometime in March, the room extension was more or less complete (just dusty, unclean and empty), but all the equipment was removed and there was no sign of any further work going on there. Anyone have any info?

Looking to get fit. What are the recommendations?? Looking for value for money vs content/results sort of thing.

    Thanks in advance.

What type of training would you be interested in?
    Kettlebells/running/martial arts/swimming/spinning/...

Well at the minute all I'm doing is some running. Really what i'm trying to do here is see whats out there and get people's opinions on what got the best results, what was fun, what was the best value for money or worth paying the extra bit for, etc.

Willing to try anything I suppose. Wouldn't know if its for me unless I try.

The Warehouse Gym is a good spot.

Crossfit Galway is also up and running now out in Oranmore.

Hello! I am new to this city and I am looking for a Gym where I can take spinning classes. Been practicing this sport for several years and since I came to the city not been able to practice it. Obviously I want to keep the costs down and would like to know where I can take good lessons. I really prefer a good instructor rather good bikes.

I used to go to spinning classes in the Kingfisher in Renmore, the guy that did them was fantastic. The class was an hour but it flew, defo worth a try if you leave near by

    Hey guys,

Myself and the wife are looking at getting gym membership for the year anywhere around town. Any recommendations,we are looking at the galway bay gym as It is only 250euro for herself as she has a student card.I might try and swing the student price for myself as well? I havent heard much about the gym in galway bay though?

Any other recommendations for couple membership?

    The hotel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

If you're around that area maybe Ardilaun or Clyboan could be contenders. Both has pools.

Biko, do you mean NRG in the Clybaun hotel? That's one of the pricier gyms in town, but you do get 2 locations.

Herself went there as a student and got a good deal. I'm not sure how much but OP can find out.

I don't agree, it is the roomiest in the city of all the ones I've been in. Although far from perfect, they could do with fixing a lot of their aerobic exercise machines, it is pretty good and you are rarely waiting too long for anything. Also has pool and sauna etc.

Parking is one of the main problems.

I got 4 months gym and swim in the Ardilaun for €160. Its grand and never too busy. Downsides: They could do with updating some equipment and more free weights and for the life of me I can't see why they have a carpet in the gym

The ardilaun is great apart from the kids swimming lessons during the summer.
Get a timetable and avoid those times.

How'd you get it for €160? Are you a student? I rang up and got quoted €207

It may have been an offer at the time. Not a student

Great deal on till Sunday in planet fitness only 240euro for two one yr memberships!
I asked them could we put a deposit on it and pay the rest Thursday because we have all our bills this week but they said no. Sickened I know people who go there and said its good. No pool though

I'm going to be starting college soon and I don't want to be a size 16 forever.
I want to get fit and be healthy, but gyms are expensive and if I dont get my first choice college offer I'll be moving away. I was wondering if there are gyms in Galway city that fit an unemployed-student's budget that will let me do trial runs before I buy a full membership incase I have to move away?

    thanks guys

kingfisher in renmore do a 7.50e for use of the gym for a few hours....not sure if it applies to the one in the UNI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭swiftman

Depends which college your at. If it's nui there kingFisher gets very busy. You could try planet health and fitness in the shopping centre. They will give you few passes to try it out. Handy to do your shopping after in tesco
Kingfisher in renmore is crazy expensive for what it offers. It's only positive is it has a pool, but does be flooded with school kids very often
Galway city gym is good, bit of a walk from both colleges on rainy days where the excuses come flowing very quick.

If you tell us where your going to be living it will be easier. Plus have you a car for the rainy evening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭TheSegal

You could check out the warehouse gym in Galway, give them a shout on Facebook. Explain your situation and ask is there any chance of getting a free pass or two, really sound lads in there so might be a chance. Serious facilities in the gym, no pool though

I saw a sign and saw planet fitness near dealz is €25 a month. Cheap but don't know what they're like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭TheSegal

Was a member of planet fitness, thought it was mediocre. Get's pretty packed in the evenings but it is really cheap and being beside Tesco it's handy if you need to pick up some stuff after using the gym. Free weights section is pretty small but the cardio section has more than enough machines for anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,587 ✭✭✭JJayoo

All gyms will be packed in the evenings. It will all depend on where you live for example the warehouse gym is cool but if it's a 45 min walk then you may not go. The NUIG Kingfish gym is pretty good, since they fixed the fecking floor, and since you will be in college you have no excuse.

Plus we can be GYM BUDDIES :):):)

    Hey!
Starting college in GMIT next week.. But just wondering does anyone know of any decent gyms in and around the area? Heard the college gym is a bit on the small and crowded side!
    Thanks!

The college gym isn't open anymore they don't have the funds.
The handiest is Active fitness at the Carlton hotel. They do student rates. It's the closest gym to the college (walking distance) it also has swimming pool.

and the Connacht rugby players use it. That tells you something.
Then there's your Warehouse Gym which would be a 20/25 min walk from college. It's your hardcore dedicated gym. No pool though.

That'd be The Connacht not Carlton hotel.

Is Kingfisher in Renmore still open? Surely that would be closer than the Connacht

    Hiya,

I'm looking to join a gym in Galway city. I know there are lots around and I have also checked out the websites, but am looking for honest feedback from current members.
I'm a girl in my 20's and want to improve my fitness, so I'd like somewhere with friendly, helpful trainers etc.

    Thanks a mil!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,587 ✭✭✭JJayoo

    Hey BlondePrincess, few questions

Is location an issue? will you be driving or walking/cycling to the gym?
    Is a swimming pool needed?

Best gyms in Galway city are The warehouse Gym, Results, NUIG if you are a student, The Salthill (expensive), Planet Health,

    Hey,

I drive so that's no problem...I live over near GMIT so would ideally like somewhere that side of town!
    Preferably with a pool too!

Active leisure is just down the road from GMIT, it's attached to the Connaught Hotel. I have never been in it but from the link below they have a nice pool.

    http://www.theconnacht.ie/leisure/active-fitness

You are also pretty close to the warehouse gym and Results. If you rang those 3 options and see if they offer a free trial.

I'd recommend the Maldron Hotel in Oranmore. Great gym and pool, with a good class timetable also for kettle bells, circuit training, TRX etc. The staff there are very friendly and knowledgeable. I think it may be 'open week' there next week, so you can try the place out for free. I've been a member there for a few years and would highly recommend it.
