An Post failing to deliver Amazon items

Had a few orders due last week and was most surprised that nothing turned up. Amazon deliveries are usually regular as clockwork. Imagine my surprise when I got an email from Amazon tonight saying "return received" and that my refund is being processed!!

Bloody hell I don't know what An Post have been up to. What worries me is that there was other stuff from China (AliExpress, eBay) due. I'm guessing maybe something happened a transit van or there was some sort of accident especially with the weather?

Not quite sure what's up but I'll be experiencing the pleasure of AP's customer service phoneline on Monday. But they'll probably be clueless as usual. Fcuking An Post.

Likely damaged in transit I would think, and may not necessarily be An Posts fault.

Even though Amazon may mark an item as dispatched by An Post, what they really mean is "it's coming from one of our distribution centres somewhere in Europe and we'll give it to An Post for local delivery when it gets to Ireland". The damage may have happened somewhere in Amazons distribution network

Tis possible I suppose. Since I'm completely in the dark all sorts of fears are running through my mind. I have no grudge against AP though as the brother gets up at 4am all the time to present people with their bills! :)

Did your order include anything that can't be transmitted through the post? I ordered some nail polishes online earlier this year, never arrived , I queried it and found it had been returned to sender.

Turned out it couldn't be posted internationally.

Funny you say that. I was expecting an amazon delivery on Thursday. It has at most been a day late, usually though it's on the button. It hasn't arrived though. I wonder if its related...

I had an Amazon order dispatched on 6th Nov, via An Post to be delivered by Wed 12th, but it only arrived yesterday, the 14th. I had used the Super Saver Delivery option, so I know there may be the occasional delays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,252 ✭✭✭mgbgt1978

As somebody already mentioned Amazon don't despatch anything here in Ireland. Even though they will give you an An Post Tracking Number this is generated at their distribution centre (usually the UK).
They obviously have the facility to generate (and print) An Post lables, and then send the stuff over here in large consignments which are then put through the postal system.
Unless the AP Track & Trace system shows a scan for the item it is still probably somewhere en route from a distribution centre.
I'd guess An Post get a lot of flak from people over stuff that never even entered the Country, just because Amazon send a mail stating that an item will be delivered by AP.

I was just googling An post delays and seen this thread. Waiting on something myself, got a dispatch email last tuesday and still nothing. Not from amazon though, an item from Simplygames.. i've ordered from them 3 other times in the last 2 months and always arrives 3 working days after dispatch.. tomorrow it'll be a full week from the date of dispatch for an item from UK to Ireland, that isnt normal, is it ?.

I'm waiting on three DVDs from Wow HD. The first was dispatched on November 1st and usually DVDs from them take about a week to reach me. As per the dispatch email, I emailed their customer service after 15 days only to be told to contact them again if it hadn't arrived after 21 days.

Amazon send trucks to An Post main sorting office at Oak Road in Clondalkin - everything is prepacked and pre labelled and even sorted into districts. This keeps costs down and also means the items restricted because most international post goes airmail don;t have the same restriction when fulfilled by amazon.

You'll find the delays nearly always on the side where it is sent. Once it arrives in the main anpost depot, it just needs to be routed to the local delivery office and delivered.

Find out what country the item has been sent from and key in that country's postal system - UK delays are dreadful

Not sure where simplygames ships from(just assuming its the UK), on the back of Alien Isolation case i got from them was french writing though, but the other games have all had english writing/descriptions on the back of the case.. idk, its within EU anyway.. nothing to do but wait and see i guess.

OP the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago and it happened twice. I bought an actifry as a gift but it never arrived and I got an email saying it had been undeliverable. I got onto amazon and they resent the item and sure enough a week later I got another email telling me I was refunded as the item was undeliverable. I got onto An Post to trace the package routes because as I've been ill I was home all the time when the deliveries should've come. The An Post guy checked the route it took and told me that neither parcel had ever arrived in Ireland. He said amazon are putting "received by carrier an post" on their track and trace before items turn up in Ireland at all sometimes. He gave me a ref number to pass onto amazon which I did but I never heard back from them.

A few wks later I got my credit card statement and found that while I got a refund for the actifry both times, 14 euro was deducted for the return on each occasion from my credit card. Watch out for that on your statement just in case. They refunded it for me after I followed it up.

Still waiting for them items aswell. This might be the reason for some of the delays.

Patience. Thanks for the linkie above re: UK strike action.

Purchased a few books on the 8th. One arrived early the following week; only today did another arrive - all within the time allotted to them. If not received today, then maybe very early of next week :) They've never arrived this late after an order, so I am putting the delay down to the Strike disruption so I am & not Amazon.

    More books for me,
Running outta space for them all tbh!

An Post must be under pressure because I was expecting an Amazon delivery on Friday to Drogheda and An Post has sent it to Dundalk!! And the tracking has been like this since Friday morning (even though An Post was operating Saturday 20th).
19 December 2014, 5:12 am, DUNDALK Possible delay in delivery due to arrival at incorrect carrier facility
18 December 2014, 11:12 am, DUBLIN PARCEL CENTRE Parcel received by carrier
17 December 2014, 5:04 pm, Ridgmont Bedfordshire UK Parcel has been handed over to the carrier and is in transit

An post deliver over 6 MILLION items of post every DAY!!! Now and again the odd parcel will be delayed ir mis directed.

We send about 1000 parcels s month via an post - 3 yesrs lster and ZERO complaints.

Thanks for that, Mr An Post spokesperson! ;)

I wasn't having a go at An Post - merely mentioning that such a thing happened. And how does sending 1000 parcels relate to my experience of waiting for delivery? For all I know you could be sending out ads and junk offers that no one was expecting or appreciates. Okay, I am joking of course. I haven't had any major issues with An Post over the years myself - except for their awful tracking website that doesn't usually show anything until after the item is delivered. It's just that I was hoping to something for this weekend, and An Post has thrown a spanner in the works, that's all.

I had a dispatch date of 11th December from Amazon, estimated delivery date 17th, still waiting for Christmas presents to arrive. Usually get Amazon stuff within 5 days no going on 12 days :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,992 ✭✭✭_Whimsical_

Another undeliverable package for me today, again my postman says that he's delivered everything he's got to my address.
Typically this one contained a very important Christmas present ordered on dec 1st! I cant get it in the shops here either.

    When was it dispatched?

I just checked an order sent with supersaver. I ordered the 6th, dispatched the 7th, and delivered the 11th.

Only time something takes longer for me is when it is sent using i-parcel.

Ya i-parcel completely lost an item I ordered recently - first time I've ever had them as carrier (hopefully last too), or had a parcel lost; can't re-order the item now either, as it's out of stock.

on the website (iparcel) it says they are UPS. I've never had anything but great service from UPS. I wonder are they separate?

Also I had an Amazon package sent out today, delivery by An Post... Wonder will it be here tomorrow haha. Lucky its not Christmas related.

This is my 4th order where this has happened now. On the earliest 2 I was told by someone in An Post when he tracked it that the parcel had never arrived in Ireland at all even though it said on tracking that it had been handed over to the carrier An Post.
I got onto amazon today and sent them a link to this thread but the guy I spoke to sounded very uninterested.

Parcel delivery may well be dependent on where you are living in terms of a particular route for a driver . Knowing delivery guys with a couple of companies including an post . If you're at the end of their run they may not have got to your area for a few days especially with couriers who cover a larger area. A guy I know with one of the couriers hasn't got to the last village on his route in a week.

To put in context he's normally got about 100 drops a day . At the moment it's about 500 it's been near 600 a few days. It is impossible to deliver everything unless everyone is home. weather is perfect.. no traffic and your flinging parcels out the window at customers as you drive past their house.

Online shopping has gone mental busy and increased work load by x5 in his case. .

Depending on where a customer might live they may just have to wait til after xmas.

Bear in mind the maths of this too. Even at 300 drops . If a guy has a 12 hr day it'll take an hr to scan and load parcels correctly for route ahead. Let's say 20 mins drive to first drop from depot and 20 mins back from last drop to depot. Surely he'll have 20 mins to grab a sandwich/take a piss etc. That's his delivery time cut to 10 hrs

10 hrs is 600 mins which gives exactly 2 mins to deliver a parcel get it signed for or write a delivery slip. Get back in van and get to next stop within 2 mins and repeat all day long. With Christmas traffic .. bad rain etc. The maths are simple that it's an impossibility for a lot of guys to deliver every item every day. The items that are not delivered will be brought back to a depot for re delivery the next day hopefully.

I ordered from hmv.ie, was dispatched on 9th Dec and still hasn't arrived. Hmv says it's sent with an post. The brother had similar problems with Amazon recently. But I must say that I never had problems like this before with an post.

Update on this. This was delivered after a couple of days of "WTF?" pause at Dundalk. Delayed by about 3 days.
    23 December 2014, 12:12 pm, DROGHEDA Delivered
23 December 2014, 9:12 am, DROGHEDA Out for delivery
22 December 2014, 12:12 pm, DUBLIN PARCEL CENTRE Parcel arrived at a carrier facility

I have another parcel I am tracking right now, and Amazon says they 'Dispatched' with An Post on Saturday, 27th December. An Post closed until today, 29th. The item is still not on An Post tracking yet.

Question - when Amazon said they "Dispatched with An Post, tracking number XXX" at Ridgmont Bedfordshire UK, does that actually mean they have handed it over to An Post man/truck there (and making it's way to Dublin over the holiday period), or does it simply mean Amazon has set aside it in corner of the warehouse where An Post will pick up when ever An Post wishes to (today when they get back from holidays)? Probably the latter right?

A couple of my UK online orders - despatched around 8 / 9 December - only arrived yesterday morning.

At present waiting for an order that was despatched on the 17 of Dec from UK, estimated delivery was the 24th of Dec.
Rang An Post to see if they have received it, nothing there, wondering now should I ask the sender for a refund as it is 21 days in transit somewhere. Or should I wait.. Seller has offered a refund..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,231 ✭✭✭marklazarcovic

an post does not go to the UK to collect anything from anyone...its only deal with by an post once it reaches Ireland... lots of these threads with blame an post titles even though the turnaround once a item reaches Ireland is 2-4 days Max... rarely goes over that and is usually 2 days.... if something is posted in the uk-france-italy-oz etc etc until it reaches Ireland an post does not touch it.....amazed that people think once they order something abroad that its in an posts possession almost immediately

Ordered a pc part from Amazon.

Had a missed delivery Friday, funny as I made sure to be there. Postman must have been like some stealthy ninja slipping that card in. Won't be getting anything delivered to my home again. It was a complete waste of my time and money.

Rang them up asap, paid for it to be re delivered.

Nothing today, rang them , it is being delivered. Back to amazon or to me? "Em can't say". What century is this?

They do not give a rats about providing a good service, this much I'm sure of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Update for anyone who wonders how did they miss the postman.

Re delivery didn't arrive. Rang an post complaints. Who were confused as my package said signed for and delivered. Turns out the driver was not bothered to deliver, hit a wall when I wanted to know who had signed for the package as it clearly was not me. And why was it all of a sudden being fast tracked to me after I complained.??

Very unprofessional, made zero attempt to deliver and the only explanation I can see is that someone forged signatures and lied about delivery. Where it was going to end up until I complained is anyone's guess.

This is the national postal service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

I suspect it depends a lot on what route/postal code you're on. Both our average on the bike postie and his colleague in the van (could do with a cycle that chap) are great, they know to tap on the window if we cant hear the bell and will even stash it in a hideaway and leave a note to say its there. Probably against the rules but mad convenient.

The tracking system can be very hit and miss though, I've had things marked as delivered both 2 days before arriving and 2 days after.
