"Do you have a spare somke?"

I get asked this question on a daily basis .......... I usually just reply "no" while holding eye-contact the whole time ........... I find not using a flimsy made-up excuse or looking away avoids any smart-arse or abusive responses.

A friend of mine usually says "sorry, I've only got 16 left" followed by the askee saying "ok, no worries ......" then a pause and a look of confusion as they slowly walk away. Cracks me up every time!! :)

My sister-in-law always says "I don't buy spare cigarettes" ...... end of discussion.

Was with my brother one day when a young lad said to him "Ya don't have a spare smoke do ya?" to which my brother replied immediately "that's right!" :)

Another friend of mine actually brings a spare box out with him on nights out for those drunken fools who offer "I'll give ya 2 euros for a smoke?" ......... he takes the 2 euros every time and hands over the smoke, he actually sold the full box one night and made 43 euros!! :D

Anyway what's your usual response/feeling when asked this question?

With a hoighty sniff I reply "Smokers are jokers."

Then I ask them to tell me a joke.

Box of 20 cigs @ €2 = €40, minus €10 for purchasing them, so how did he make €43 exactly? Is he an accountant for Tesco? ;)

Another question .......... are you one of those people who has the cheek to ask a stranger for a cigarette??

If so, then explain yourself!!!

    Hate getting asked for smokes.
But why should anyone give a cigerette to a stranger? it's 10 euro for a box of 20 john player blue right now.

Call me a cynic but the same people tapping for a smoke are the same people who have a box of 20 in their pocket.

Would be kind of unusual for someone to ask for a spare cigarette if you weren't actually smoking? I suppose there are the certain "few" who would….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭ElvisChrist6

Not a smoker, but to be honest, I'm sure most of you who are know what it's like to not have one and crave one. There's nothing wrong with asking for something, but if they harrass you after saying no then it's a problem. Surely you could give someone a bit of a break every now and then and spare one, but if not, there's no need to be so judgemental of them. THere's nothing wrong with asking for something, whether they be homeless, drug addicts, smokers. YOu can just say no!

I've never smoked but have been asked bajillions of times for a smoke or a light. Usually after 2am passing a fast food emporium.

I suppose, on a night out is fairly common, but usually walking down the street during the day would rarely happen

I don't smoke but pretty much every evening at the bus stop I get asked for 'spare' smokes, and often times the same person has asked me a few evenings in a row - either didn't remember me or thought I was lying and said he would chance his arm again.

I estimated I could of made a fortune one summer in Times Square by selling cigaretes to the numerous people who asked me in one night.

I was on the e-cig for 3/4 months and I too loved the look of disappointment on there faces when they realised ........ until one day a junkie asked me if he could "have a go off it?" ....... WTF

Yes I do know what it's like to not have a cigarette and crave one ......... I usually go the nearest shop/petrol station/cigarette machine and buy some ........ I would never ever ask a stranger to give me something that belongs to them which they have paid for!!

Nope ......... if you're a smoker (and I assume you are?) and you have ever had a night out (which I assume you have?) then you must have come across the "I'll buy one off you brigade"???

It's a ploy so you know they are genuine and not just a scrounger but it's still annoying ......... so my mate takes full advantage of them!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭CB19Kevo

Always asked for cigs or lighters on nights out,Could be in mid conversation with a friend and some idiot butts in and ask's.
Bad enough in itself but i never smoked.
Knew a lad who used always hand them over when asked, just think he felt pressurised to avoid conflict of saying no,You might get a thanks off some but many used just take it and walk away.
Feel sorry for the genuine person who might have lost a pack and just looking for one because some people just scrounge all the time and give no thanks for it.

Some people can't every time though. But even if that doesn't matter, what's the harm in asking honestly? If you don't want to help, that's fine, but it's not a big deal being asked. I don't know many who wouldn't give one up, because they knwo the feeling of not being able to afford their own until the next day or something and craving one, but even the ones that don't aren't bitter about it.

    "No I don't, sorry".

Nothing worse than the look of disdain you get then. Don't give me the evils because I'm not handing out my (expensive!) smokes to you.

If asked by a hot girl, "Don't smoke myself, how about a shift instead?"
Obviously done far more stylishly, but has quite an amazing success rate ;)

When I used to smoke, I'd often just say "sorry, I don't smoke"... whilst smoking. That or say "yes", and keep walking. Usually tell the pyjama brigade to "f**k off", though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,955 ✭✭✭Conall Cernach

I wonder how it became acceptable to try to bum a cigarette of someone. You wouldn't get complete strangers coming up to you say "Do you have a spare Mars bar" or anything else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

It's because of the whole social aspect attached to smoking and smokers. Handing out fags to others is just something that has become a part of it. I for one, whenever I smoke, find a certain joy in giving rollies to friends or even sometimes strangers at nightclubs or smoking rooms (could end up making a new best friend)...maybe not so much knacks on the street as they don't seem to appreciate the gesture as much.

The most annoying 'tappers' are the ones who see you come out of a shop with smokes in hand, and as you are putting them away you get a big "wouldnt have a spare smoke bud?"

I simply say "nope" with a rude-ish tone. Like when someone generally taps me for a smoke I say "nah sorry man" (shouldnt say sorry but I am being polite) But I hate that 'put you on the spot' crap. They saw you put them in your pocket so they're trying to guilt you into giving one. It deserves a rude response everytime.

I would give someone a cig a lot more easily than i would give someone 50c. Probably the fact i am a smoker myself there seems a difference in perspective to the addiction thing. I often give someone a cig but practically never give someone 50c

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭masculinist

Random dudes who think they can just turn up whine and disappear with cig in hand have another thing going. Women do be at it too. Batting the eyelashes to acquire a cigarette. I have seen them take a cig and not even pause to say thankyou. Once the cig has been acquired the conversation is ended mid sentence. I dont tolerate that sort of nonsense at all. If I go out its for some good banter. If I am having the craic I'm not that possessive over my cigs. Since I rarely smoke anyway I even subconsciously feel like every cig I give away is good for my health ;-)

I'm a social smoker and enjoy one on the rare occasions that I head out for drinks but I always buy a pack and I am happy to give some away as I won't smoke them all anyhow! Usually find a homeless person and offer what I have left to them rather than taking them home.

I have gone from over 20 a day to 0 a day in the last month and intend to keep it that way!
But in over 25 years as a B&H smoker I have had many many nights out both here and abroad and will continue to do so.

I have often had people offering to buy a cigarette from me (not only on nights out, but in general, in airports, at matches etc), but I have never been offered €2 for one let alone a fiver. I always gave a cigarette to the first person asking me for one on any given day but never took any money for it.

If I didn't have a cigarette to spare I always refused people politely. I know what its like to be down on my luck myself and know what its like to crave a highly addictive drug and it isn't a nice feeling.

I don't see the point in being a prick to someone when they are already on their downers, unlike some of the replies on this thread. If I have a cig to spare I'll give it to someone (if they ask nicely). If not, I tell them I don't without rubbing their nose in shít over it. Its only a fucking cigarette after all.

Some of the people replying here sound like the yuppie **** I used to see in London in the late 80's when I first started smoking and going out. I worked in the pub game and they were joy to behold. They spent their evenings showing off by outspending each other on expensive champagne they couldn't pronounce and burning £20 notes in front of homeless people outside the nightclub afterwards before getting into a taxi back to their over mortgaged shoebox in Docklands and arguing with him because the fare was 50p cheaper last weekend. It all came to a sudden end for them when the arse fell out of the property market and they were suddenly out of work and up to their snot in negative equity in their Thames side shoeboxes.

    What comes around goes around.

I still don't believe your yarn about this mate of yours selling cigs for a fiver though. Perhaps he is the one spinning you along and you're happy to believe it. Fair enough. But if there is any grain of truth in it, he sounds like a complete arsehole.

EDIT: Agreed RE the comment above regarding the pyjama brigade. They can fuck right off.
