We need to bring back religion big time. Everyone back to Mass and confession, one television channel, no radio between midnight and 6.30 am and louder angelus bells. More priests is the answer. Good wholesome bacon and cabbage.

Porn taught me to raise my standards. It also taught me about some sexual perversions that people have, which I could not possibly imagine.

Porn is information, and knowledge is power.

No problem with porn itself, the problem is the easy access to it. When I was growing up, seeing a playboy magazine in school or looking at Disclosure with Demi Moore was about as hardcore as it got! Now kids have easy access to all kinds of stuff online from any age. People can say "Oh it's the parent's responsibility to handle their access" but years ago parent's didnt have to worry about such a thing. Now it's a full time job to enable your child to have a childhood.

*I have no kids, but that's what it seems like to me.

Scat porn, incest, rape. If you don't find that sick you got problems.

Its not real. Its acting. I'm a woman and I used to use an erotic fiction site aimed at women. Rape and incest was one of the most popular forums. People often use porn to explore their darkest fantasies, it doesn't mean they actually want to have sex with their dad or be attacked or that they don't recognise the seriousness of those things. Its just fantasy and once its used in a responsible way its pretty harmless.

Scat is generally consensual, rape and incest aren't, hatrickpatrick said in the post you quoted "If something is consensual" therefor he wasn't talking about rape or incest or any form of forced sexual interaction

    Sure we are

I think men's most common fantasy is a threesome. Does that mean they are all cheating b@stards?

Its just a bit of fun!! If you don't like it fair enough but better to use porn and explore these things in a safe way than do it for real right?

Yes, because men definitely don't have socially unacceptable fantasies either.

Some don't though. It's the small minority who are impressionable that worry me.

But banning porn isn't the solution (it wouldn't even work if we tried, prohibition of anything, never works, it always just ends up driving it underground with usually very negative effects). Instead proper sex education of our children, proper integration of boys and girls at a young age in schools and perhaps most importantly, Irish parents not being embarrassed about sex and instead having real, open, meaningful conversations with their children.

The problem we have here in Ireland is most parents sticking their head in the sand and pretending sex doesn't exist. Instead they should be teaching their children about porn and sex. Telling them that it is ok, it isn't weird, you will probably enjoy it, no need to be embarrassed, but that it isn't real, that it is fantasy, that you don't treat men/women like that and instead this is how you should treat them.

If you look around at the societies that typical ban porn, they usually have by far the worst record on womens rights. While I'm generalising, look at the middle east, where porn is normally banned, but most women are treated like sex slaves, sold into forced marriages at a young age, raped as children, stoned to death if raped by another man, etc.

I can't think of a single society that bans porn and also treats women in a healthy manner. In fact it seems to be inversely proportional, the more porn is banned, the worse women are typically treated.

I worry how sexually provocative we are becoming as a society and the implications for future generations.

No. There would probably be a huge recession.

    In my penis. :pac:

On a slightly more serious note, as long at the actors/actresses aren't under duress or being abused (in a non voluntary manner) in any way, I'm fine with porn.
From the consumer point of view, I do think it can be overdone. the whole nofap thing makes a few good points. Viewing it and having a **** multiple times per day over years and years isn't healthy.

Good point. Healthy discussion of relationships, intimacy and proper Sex Education would be a great start.

It's worth noting that most porn is actually banned in Ireland. A few years ago i had a friend who was stopped by customs and asked if he had any contraband. He honestly replied no. They searched his bag and pulled out a porn dvd he'd bought in Amsterdam. My friend couldn't believe porn was illegal here.

It's only a few years ago that the Gardai were still raiding sex shops on Caple st and confiscating porn.

I had an ex who was into what she called "surprise sex". I had to jump out of a doorway or something like that and pin her down.
I wasn't really that into it (beyond the fact that I was getting sex), she wasn't a small girl and she was actually stronger than me so it was all a bit too much effort for me. :D

The point is that rape fantasy's aren't that unusual, there are people who roleplay that kind of stuff and it's not just guys.

Incest isn't necessarily forced of course.

My feeling is that it is changing the relationships and sexual expectations of younger people which is not great for society in general and women in particular.

Ack sex education is not going to replace porn. 50 year old mrs O'Sullivan is not going to come in and suggest to 15 year olds that they may prefer a more intimate form of sexuality than the *embarrsed cough* bukkake, anal, deep throating (etc) stuff they are seeing on the web.

    That won't work.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,109 ✭✭✭✭How Soon Is Now

I'm not into much of it myself but I don't see what harm it's doing.

People have a right to look at it or try things if they want to.

You can't just keep complaining and banning everything you don't like or don't want.

I could think of things that are screwing up society a lot more than porn! But there not as easy to target.

Look, if you are not old enough to consent it is forced, if you are old enough to consent but don't know why it is wrong then something happened to you that made you think it is acceptable so again it is forced.

But thats not porns fault thats parents and teachers fault, they are the people who should be teaching kids about sex, if a kids only experience of sex from the age of 14 to 18 is porn then it is the parents who failed not the porn industry

Just because a person enjoys porn, doesn't mean they don't treat their partners with respect and kindness!

That is ridiculous and is like trying to claim that people who play GTA will run around gunning down people!

The vast majority of people know the difference between escapist fantasy and the real world.

We here in Ireland went through decades of porn being banned and our society was unfortunately rife with sexual abuse, rape, child abuse, forced marriages, Magdalene Laundrys, etc.

Banning porn had no benefit, in fact nearly all scientific research done shows that countries with open porn laws actually have far lower incidents of rape, etc.

What we need to do here in Ireland is to get over our stupid Catholic guilt about sex. We need to relearn that sex and even porn is a a natural, enjoyable, normal part of life and not something to be feared!

This is even more ridiculous comparing a game fantasy to a reality, you my friend seem very naive to the reality of porn and what goes on behind the screen of what your watching.

Porn is filmed prostitution Porna stand for prostitute and graphia stand for documentation. Prostitution is clearly nobody childhood dream it's always the result of fear and stress, porn is mostly about male domination of women; anything that pleases a man you will find in a porn website, if you find rape arousing you will find a category for that, you find a women being chocked and slapped arousing you will find that.
Actually in every mainstream porn category in the web you will find, the rape category side by side with the humiliation category, abuse category and crying category.
You should also not only be mindful of what you feed your body but also what you feed your mind, am sorry but the vast majority of people do not know the difference between reality and fantasy when it comes to pornography, once you expose the dark side of pornography to them they are truly shocked. Pornography is the kind of thing that will make girls think that if they want to be worthy of love they need to be worthy of sexual desire the definition of which is similar now days to "be like a porn star".
Every where you go now you will find girls that at a certain point agreed to be filmed in an intimate situation to please some guy that they had feeling for and this guy misappropriated their trust and end up selling or publishing the clip somewhere, and normally no one addresses that guy in term of morals but it's always the girl that suffer from shaming and humiliation, they can change school or move to different cities but will still be haunted in social network.

Porn is not an embodiment of freedom of expression or occupation or even sexual liberation it's an embodiment of sex exploitation working side by side with human trafficking, pimping and prostitution.Watching porn creates a demand and whenever their is a demand their is a supply the scum of the earth are already out there trying to solicit and prostitute these women for your viewing pleasure.

Hmm. I am totally unconvinced that the parents even know what is in standard porn movie. If they do watch they don't care. If they don't they don't know. The original aim of sex ed was to explain sex to kids who wouldn't have heard of it ( the talk) and the risks ( pregnancy and STI) not to distinguish between the fantasy of porn and real sex. That battle won't be won.

Btw I don't think anything can be done. But I don't think it's neutral either.

Some women actually like the more extreme aspects of sex, like choking, rape play and so on. We aren't all delicate flowers who need protecting from sub/dom sexual fantasy.

1: Incest could be consensual. Why couldn't it?
2: I meant the depiction being consensual, IE actors, actresses etc not forced into it.

Actually I would say in my experience that the vast majority of women have at least a few extreme sexual fantasies.

Every single girl I've ever dated turned out to have some kinky fantasies. I'm a very open minded person and will try almost everything and once the women I've dated discovered that, the damn usually bursts and they are telling me all the deep fantasies they have had and if we could try them out. Yes, even the most initially prudish seeming girls, in fact it is the quietest ones who normally end up having the wildest kinks.

Actually I think once done right, women actually enjoy sex more then men, want it more and actually have more diverse fantasies.

Unfortunately it comes back to the whole Irish Catholic guilt thing. Girls think they are supposed to not like or want sex and not have fantasies. And then they get all embarrassed and frustrated when they do and scared to tell their partner of their fantasies, in case he thinks they are weird. It isn't, it is perfectly natural and normal, girls don't be embarrassed about your bodies and your fantasies.

This is fairly symptomatic of posts on this thread. Mostly anecdotal discussions.

Anybody got real data? The Internet is old enough now.
