Would society be better off without pornography?

For those who view it as a positive thing - it (can be) a form of freedom of sexual expression and a source of income for those who see it as a vocation and genuinely enjoy working in the adult industry - though I would question how many really enjoy it as a career. Some people enjoy it for use in their own sex lives to spice up lust-less marriages, couples can find gratification in watching an adult movie together for example.

On the negative flip side - people can be exploited, the rise of graphic violent porn has serious implications for sex education and the implication of what constitutes 'normal' relationships. Some would argue it demeans women (and men alike) contributing to body insecurity and unrealistic expectations of sexual performance with a potential partner. 'Revenge' porn law sentences are currently being considered for those who publish intimate private pics of former ex's without their consent.

Personally, i'm not a prude, however it is worrying how today's generation might be affected by the negative flip-side of the adult industry. I'd want my offspring to grow up to view sex in a healthy manner, and treat their OH's with respect and kindness. I worry how sexually provocative we are becoming as a society and the implications for future generations.

Does pornography have a place in society? Or would we be better off without it?

    Sexually provocative as a society?

Yeah, we're definitely more sexual than ever now. The Romans and Greeks were prudes.

Get rid of porn and there would be nuclear war within the week.

Just because a person enjoys porn, doesn't mean they don't treat their partners with respect and kindness!

That is ridiculous and is like trying to claim that people who play GTA will run around gunning down people!

The vast majority of people know the difference between escapist fantasy and the real world.

We here in Ireland went through decades of porn being banned and our society was unfortunately rife with sexual abuse, rape, child abuse, forced marriages, Magdalene Laundrys, etc.

Banning porn had no benefit, in fact nearly all scientific research done shows that countries with open porn laws actually have far lower incidents of rape, etc.

What we need to do here in Ireland is to get over our stupid Catholic guilt about sex. We need to relearn that sex and even porn is a a natural, enjoyable, normal part of life and not something to be feared!

I can't remember the last time I watched porn. lol It's harmless. There's no point banning nor censoring it as it would just create a black market. Supply and demand etc.

Blaming porn is just an excuse for some things. Worried about how young people will view sex? Then don't rely on porn to teach them.

Nothing wrong with porn once everyone involved is consenting and an adult and used responsibly. I don't see it as a taboo, we're all human, its normal to want to see sexy images and its nothing to be ashamed of. I think the type of porn you watch and the way you process it is the issue rather than porn itself. My only concern with it is young people watching it and having unrealistic expectations of sex and partners.

Some don't though. It's the small minority who are impressionable that worry me.

Porn and the surrounding discussion communities online allowed me at a very young age (10-11) to make peace with my own kink, which I feel would otherwise have plagued me with shame and repression for most of my adolescence since it goes completely against the mainstream grain (without getting graphic about it, I find a b!tchy attitude hot and enjoy being tied up etc ;) ). I've had girlfriends tell me that I'm one of the easiest guys they've been with to divulge deep fantasies and hidden secrets due to that open mindedness, I don't believe that would be there had I not had such support from the internet in the sense that "someone is making videos of this, there are communities for guys like you to share stories, this does not make you a freak!". For that reason, I approve of porn 100%.

So what to do about them then? Wrap them in cotton wool and censor art and the expression of every human instinct? There's always going to be crazy people and they will find any form of catharsis for their issues regardless if it's the Bible/Koran, porn, Marilyn Manson or Mortal Kombat.

Get real man. Porn stars are broken shells of people. You think women like being **** sluts for a living?

Porn definitely screws people up, especially young men. Time was a young man's only exposure to porn was page 3 or a dirty mag (how innocent times were). Now they're exposed to all kinds of sick **** on the internet.

Do you know any personally? How are you making these assumptions?

Define "sick"? One man's "sick" is another man's fantasy, same for women. The whole beauty of porn is that people can make peace with such kinks rather than regarding themselves as "sick".

Bad people who do bad things to others have been around since the dawn of time pre pornography and pre Internet ,
    Banning porn won't solve anything

Is it porn that makes people that way or does porn attract people who are vulnerable in the first place?

Porn is not a good industry to be in for your general health and wellbeing if this is anything to go by

However we can nanny everyone, if someone wants to do it then let them.

Calling the people in the industry sluts isn't nice either, nothing wrong with having lots of sex and getting paid for it.

The question isn't so much banning porn, it's more how we deal with it as society and if we'd be better off trying to minimize its impact.

I guess like everything there are people who use it in moderation then there are those who abuse it.

    Definitely shouldn't be banned though.

They work in retail too? Would have thought the pay was better

Watch any documentary on porn, Read interviews with ex porn stars. It's a nasty industry.

Define "sick"? One man's "sick" is another man's fantasy, same for women. The whole beauty of porn is that people can make peace with such kinks rather than regarding themselves as "sick".

You know full well anything can be found on line.

They found the porn industry less degrading.

No. Point is moot anyway as it is impossible to ban. Sure the Romans stood around watching orgys pulling the engines out of themselves, it's been around forever. People thing dogging, stage shows, exhibitionism, swinging etc...are new things, they are not. I presume you are talking about internet porn, it just takes the hassle out of it. I'm off for a peddle and crank now.

I do indeed. That in no ways answers my question - define "sick"? If something is consensual, by my definition it can't be sick.

Scat porn, incest, rape. If you don't find that sick you got problems.

And how do we minimise it's impact exactly ,
society is driven by porn or much less majorly influences Society on a daily basis .

Education at a young age is key here and parental responsibility or lack of it when it comes to anything sexual or sex education

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,797 ✭✭✭✭hatrickpatrick

Scat porn, incest, rape. If you don't find that sick you got problems.

If the above is depicted consensually, by my definition it can't be described as "sick". Personally I find the idea of playing with poo absolutely vile, but if someone else gets off to it who am I to tell them not to?
