Well in fairness Paddy Kelly never said they put the gym together and/or painted the place, that was Kieran Shannon, who we all know has an agenda. I'd be more inclined to believe Ger Lane over him in that regard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,385 ✭✭✭✭D'Agger

Ger Lane has completely missed the fúcking point here by the look of things

Kellys gripe wasn't that they didn't have good enough facilities, or that the equipment wasn't good enough. It was that the Senior team are holed up in Fermoy acting independently.

Compare that to what Dublin & Tyrone have achieved, with Kerry following suit in Currans soon - big fundraising, an effort to not just provide facilities, but provide top of the line facilities for use across all age groups - senior down to u16 development squads.

Kelly described it as wanting a 'This is Cork' mentality & that is 100% what Cork GAA needs right now.

It just goes to show you - this, genuine, credible and very true piece of criticism by Kelly has been taken, misinterpreted and responded to in a negative fashion - trying to put a positive spin on it

    'Sure the players like Fermoy'

I'm sure they do Ger, but your no.1 football representatives should be representing Cork and setting an example for the next generation of young fellas coming through by training alongside them. All good though - I'm sure the one pitch at PUC will be ample & the players will like it.

Absolute nail on the head D'Agger.

Perhaps we've become immune given our modern history but if we stand back and look at what Kelly came out with, it's actually explosive stuff in GAA terms.
If a recently retired player of Kellys standing came out with this in any other self respectng GAA county there would be a revolt.
Rebels me arse. We should hand back the moniker at this stage.

Wish he'd give Pa Collins a proper go starting. Hopefully the league sees him take the number 1 jersey and if so i cant see Nash sticking around so Dalton to step up.

I'd rate Collins as an excellent keeper but would still have Nash as my first choice.

Just wondering what would be your reason for making a change?

The GK issue is big for me and I had hoped for some sort of change. Nash's puck outs are extremely poor and spend way too long in the air. Both Collins/Dalton play out field for their clubs although Dalton plays in goal with Imokilly seems to be a trend lately in Cork, with Darren Mc being a sub keeper and playing out field with Ballymartle. Is it so hard to find a keeper that actually plays in goal all the time.

Collins is a better shot-stopper, and hits better puck-outs. Typically though goalies in Cork don't get dropped unless they retire.

Nash is now what, 32/33? Oldest on the panel? Collins, along with many other out field players that we are seeing are the future. It stems to reason that a young full and half back line, and forwards for that matter, get used to playing with puck outs and calls from a goalkeeper that will be in the position going forward for years to come. Thats of course if Collins/Dalton are the next keeper to hold the position.

Were Waterford not playing a scrap team?

Wouldn't exactly say a scrap team. Still a few well known names. Plus a good few off the u21 team who would be expected to have a bright future so it was a pretty decent team for this time of year

Well done to Midleton today. Beat Ard Scoil with a penalty in injury time. Sets up an all Cork semifinal with St Colemans and a Cork team in the Harty final

It must be over 20 years since 2 Cork Teams played in a Harty Semi. Things looking up down south?

long, long road ahead but yeah, hopefully a step in the right direction.

Well done to Midleton CBS. Great for Cork hurling to have 2 Cork teams in the Harty semi final. A Cork team guaranteed to be in the final. Should be a cracker of a game with St. Colmans Saturday the 28th.

In other news, strong rumours going around that Cian McCarthy has requested a transfer from Sars to Douglas.

They could have an *outrageous* forward line next year if this goes through.

*outrageous in the context of Cork club hurling, so take it with a pinch of salt.*

    Alan Cadogan
    Cian Mc
    Shane Kingston,
    Shane Bourke
    Mark Collins

Take a bit of minding and I left someone out, mind gone blank.
Cadogan Snr back CB as well

Stephen Moylan (although I think he usually plays midfield for them) plus Mark Dolan and Mark O'Connor.

Was Mark Dolan captain of their 21s this year? Small lad played played half forward

Christy O'Connor Article on the Cork SF Gym Saga

Again, as I mentioned previously on this topic - the issue isn't the current setup, moreso what's planned for the next generation of Cork football & hurling

You cannot expect a group of players to compete at Senior inter-county level when they're setup like a club team. In fact, there's many a club team in Cork setup better than the Cork seniors by the sounds of it. Compare their plight to the pre season preparations of Dublin, Donegal, Kerry, Mayo etc. and it will highlight just how badly Football in this county has been let down.

    <snip>
If I read it correctly the pairc ui caoimh "centre of excellence" will only have one pitch? Is that right ?
So the largest county in Ireland which has teams playing top flight (well.... normally anyhow) in both codes, and with U21 and soon to have u25 hurling teams as well as minors, is going to train all those teams on one single pitch ?

    And in Tyrone theres
five grass pitches, two 3G pitches and a main building designed in the shape of a curved Celtic T, it stands as both a shrine to the past and a statement about the future.

All strands of Tyrone GAA are represented. As modern and polished as the place is, there is a soul about it. In other centres of excellence where county teams operate from, the surroundings can be sterile and detached from the rest of the county’s GAA experience, or else staid and even haunted by black and grey images and ghosts of the past. Here there is a sense of everything being connected: The past, present, and future; player, coach, official, and supporter; club, schools, and county."

There seems to be not much foresight with building things in Cork. Just look at the decision of making the Jack Lynch tunnel 2 lanes either side....

indeed, heres whats coming online soon as a central training ground for corks intercounty teams, so the centre of excellence which will replace the arrangement in Fermoy that all the players are totally happy with, is indeed literally just a single training pitch

Ya what we will have is 8 intercounty teams with access to 1 pitch and 1 gym for the year outside of course when premium corporate sponsors book the 'centre of excellence', bottom line once this white elephant is open the development squads will still be all over the county, minor teams, u21 teams,u25 team and junior football will get the odd day out inthe pairc. We will have a lovely stadium and ****e teams, cork gaa as paddy kelly so many people dont actually give a **** anymore, apathy killing us
