As if the Daily Mail isn't sensationalist enough, you've gone and done a whole Kay Burley on it OP

Thanks, reading up on Kay Burley was a good laugh

More importantly, are ridiculously misleading thread titles ever justified?

To be honest, £26 each, for an unreserved seat, bought at that short notice, for a train ticket in the UK for that distance is very reasonable.

Every time I've been on that route, there were reminder messages about the London Midland tickets. Not that easy a mistake to make.
Not only that, it actually says on the ticket, in the largest font used on that ticket, that the ticket is 'NOT VALID ON VIRGIN TRAINS'
Fair enough. It's still a large fine though, albeit a collective one. Seems disproportionate imo.

Edit: Sum of £1k + threat of fine*
LOL, the price they paid is pretty much mid range for a peak time ticket on that route and maybe a couple of quid more than the most expensive off peak fare. I think they did pretty good, considering it is more likely than not they were chancing their arms.

Fines should be proportionate to a persons income, like they have in Finland.
Have you ever met an Irish person in your life that would tell their own family how much they earn, never mind a train inspector?

Because the companies running public transport are always seen as terrible people by idiots.

They got off lightly. A single ticket with Virgin can cost 50 Pounds or more depending on the time of day. They were charged less than 27 Pounds each so very lucky.

Also, typically misleading headline from a newspaper, never mind a non-story. They have to get clicks some way I suppose.
