Top Gear kicked out of Argentina - World gone mad?

Make of this what you will but I find it hard to believe that the bosses deliberately went out of their way to search for a car that has a number plate which reflects the Falklands war.
Even if it was a piece of tongue in cheek humour it seems like the Argentines can't take even a modicum of a joke.
So they have now been escorted to the airport and told to leave.
    Opinions?

Was bound to happen them eventually.

Dangerous to assume everyone is in on a joke.

Surely has happened before, in other countries? Also someone will probably post that Stewart Lee video.

Haven't read the article but I love Argentina even more than I did before if they kicked out that shower of gob****es (Top Gear muppets).

And one they're definitely not lacking is a sense of humour by the way.

The Malvinas/Falklands is an extremely contentious topic there and you'd have to understand that before you comment.

Edit: Just read the article and yeah, probably a bit of an overreaction. Still glad they got kicked out though.

It's good, but it's not right.

My opinions, w/o seeing the show:

    1) Of course they got those plates to be inflammatory.

    2) it's all scripted.

    3) the lads are insufferable.

The sinking of the Belgrano was a war crime.

Great, Jeremy Clarkson is a prat and doesn't know what humor is ...

Maybe the Argies should just chill the f^7k out and gone along with the joke......

........waited until the three annoying tw@ts were in the car and let fly with a salvo of Exocets!!

......or done a Sir Gallahad and set fire to it!

I suspect Top Gear would be happy producing jokes about the Falklands as long as they're doing them in Argentina.

Local officials said the Porsche had the license plate "H982 FKL" which they felt was a reference to the 1982 war between the countries over the Falkland Islands....

...Top Gear bosses have said the plate was merely a coincidence and was not chosen deliberately.
Both the numbers and the letters appear to refer to the war - that truly is a remarkable coincidence!

(Not in the least bit similar to the kind of puerile attention-seeking for which Top Gear is so well-known.)

Some say they have a small army of script writers for the show, and they actually know fcuk all about cars at all.

Still think it was an over the top reaction by the Argentine Government.
Yes, Clarkson has a habit of fecking things up but I do enjoy watching May.
At the end of the day it is a comedy car show, of course all the accidents, feck ups are scripted but they are not to be taken seriously.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,780 ✭✭✭Frank Lee Midere

Assuming the first character has to be a letter I am guessing that it's H982 not I982 because the letter I wasn't available.

Or like the mumbled N word or the use of the word "slope" for a crooked bridge it's got plausible deniability.

Of course it's scripted. The races are scripted. Who wins what is scripted.

Whether or not they did it deliberately it means that the Argentinian government has produced a licence plate that alludes to the Falklands war. They should throw themselves out of the country!

I enjoy Top Gear, but everyone knows to expect naught but twattery from them at this point.

That's an episode of Top Gear I'd happily watch.

Talking to Argentinians about the Falklands is like talking to Americans about Guns and Religion. Its and extremely emotive topic there.

No harm having that shower of clowns kicked out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,780 ✭✭✭Frank Lee Midere

I don't care about cars but I can watch the specials. If they lost the low level bigotry it would be better.

I'd imagine it was an English plate, not an Argentinian one.

    Agree with the rest though.

Missed out on a free worldwide promotion for their country.
They do act like idiots but the countries they visit are normally portrayed in a good way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

The plate is genuine and has been registered since 1991 in the uk
Tax and insurance is all up to date

I was going to say they jumped the shark, but that would be a pretty good statement for every episode.

I was thinking the same thing.
When they went looking for the best driving road and found the Stelvio Pass, how many people then went and did it for themselves?
Argentina kinda shot themselves in the foot potentially - considering the shape their economy is in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,507 ✭✭✭Buona Fortuna

Not the greatest PR move by the Argentine. Was obviously a big set up but Argentina would have been better to have ignored and let them produce a rather half-asred episode rather than give them the publicity they clearly wanted.

Though I did enjoy that one they did in the deep South where one of them had a car painted pink and "I Like men" (or similar) painted on it. Then I realised that my enjoyment was me thinking someone is going to get their ass handed to them :D

I doubt the Argentinian tourist board are too bothered about attracting those that watch Top Gear for holiday tips

Thought the Transfagasan (or however you spell it) was the best road?

The Stelvio has been to known about for years - at least by cyclists ;)

Well then the English government has produced a licence plate that alludes to the Falklands'. That has to be a declaration of war, surely?

Be a bit of a laugh to drive around Birmingham with an 'IRA 21' number plate or around Canary Wharf or Warrington with an 'IRA 2' number plate. Maybe pop down to Brighton with an 'IRA 5' plate on.
I'm sure the Brits would find it a bit of a giggle seeing as they have such a wonderful sense of humour..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,297 ✭✭✭✭Jawgap

Let's face it, if they really wanted to do a motoring show about Argentina, the number plate would have been on a Maserati and it would have read......

    FAN910 ;)

I enjoy Top Gear, but found that the last 2/3 years' specials are too scripted. That said, there are plenty alive today who lost loved ones in the Falklands war and for that, they were treading on egg shells.

I also know some Argentinians living here and they have lost faith in their own country. The current government have ruined the country. Their economic policies make Sinn Fein look like a bunch of Warren Buffetts. One of my argentinian friends can't even send his mother a christmas gift because of government restrictions on imports, and she is not a "licensed importer". It doesn't matter how good or bad the joke, the argentine government would probably ban it.

That was so funny that I nearly pi$$ed myself.

Bit of a difference between blowing the fcuk out of ordinary civilians: at a remembrance parade, in a pub - to two armies fighting each other though.

Except when you realise that most of the Argentinian forces sent to the Islands were conscripts, and the whole controversy around the sinking of ARA Belgrano.......before you even get to the reason why the Islands were invaded in the first place.

Anyway, Top Gear is (and has been for sometime) recycling the same old format - go to a country and poke fun at it based on crude stereotyping. It's still mildly amusing, but it's becoming quite tired.

It would be better if they brought in some fresh faces and made it less scripted.

I think those defending Clarkson et al would feel less enamoured if they were driving around here with inflammatory number plates referring to our own violent history with Engerland.

It would want to be a long plate ,

The fact its a genuine plate on a German car would suggest its a coincidence.

If it was deliberately staged it would have been put on a English marque ,

Now remind me who exactly invaded the islands
