Planning to do the half marathon.

    It is going ahead AFAIK

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 751 ✭✭✭SeanPuddin

In for the half but might extend to the 30k if feeling okay. Going ahead for sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭ger664

Going ahead alright I am down to pace the 30K

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭Bulmers74

Doing the 30k again this year as part of a long run as it's local to me. No complaints from last year. Plenty water, 5k splits & the lads from BMOH ably pacing. Last year it was run in conjunction with Dooneen AC but not this year it seems! No mention on the website as to whether it's a licensed or permitted event

The website isn't the best, in the News section it's all the goings on from 2013..

It's sh!t! All they seemed to have done is changed the date of the event on the website. Also people have asked questions with no reply which is not satisfactory.

I just printed off the entry receipt. It says number collection is the 5th and 6th of October. The race is on the 5th.

They didn't even bother changing the collection dates from last year. It's just another money grabbing event thrown together by Cleary. At least Dooneen AC were involved last year.

    Anyway, I'm doing the 30k.

Hi, I am thinking of doing the 30k also because it would suit me in prep for Dublin. Has anyone on here done it previously and what is the course like. It said on the website last week that some of the proceeds are going to Dooneen AC but then I looked on the Dooneen facebook page and they are urging people to do a 10k race in Limerick in aid of a rowing club on the same day. Is this a commercial event because if so I will give it a miss.

When I entered I didn't see any mention of Dooneen AC so it doesn't even enter my radar as a problem.

They didn't answer any questions on their website from 2013 also.

I'll be there with my hiviz "I completed the Craughwell 10", if you spot me don't be afraid to say hello even if I look a bit serious :)

I don't think it's got the AAI accreditation. St. Michael's Rowing Club are running a 10km race on the same day and it seems most of the athletes in the city are going for that one.

Yes, the Human Race (what a godawful name!) is a commercial event and Dooneen AC are not involved according to a member who I was talking to lately. As per my post above, it seems that most seasoned athletes are doing the St. Michael's Rowing Club 10k, or so I heard.

    Yes to commercial

    Flat course
    3 laps
    Splits every 5km
    Good numbers there last year

Most definitely a commercial event. Dooneen AC have no part in this years outing & neither does any other club afaik. If I was looking for a 10k to do this weekend I'd do the Urban Run organised by SMRC. Some interesting commentary on the West Limerick AC FB page yesterday which has since been removed!

Fill me in. What was going on?

An add for the HR was posted & members got the hump as the club were advertising a non aai permitted event. Seemingly the club had previously agreed not to advertise such events. They went on to have a pop at the previously named race director.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭ger664

Neither race in Limerick will benefit an athletics club directly so I dont know what people are getting hot and bothered about an AAI permit for.

The Human Race is a commercial event with proceeds going to a commercial company.
The urban Run is a fund raiser for a Rowing Club with an unstated amount going to their charity partner.

The AAI have already got their 30 pieces of silver from one of the races. They probably would like to have got it from both.

Man, this race seems to be drumming up bad blood everywhere. I have a feeling something happened with focus events and Dooneen too.

I didn't even know the race hasn't got a permit. What did I pay 40 bucks for? I won't even be insured if I get hit by a car.

So, West Limericks own members were the ones that were annoyed by the advertising?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭ger664

Permit has absolutely nothing to do with insurances unless the event is being hosted by an AAI club and 100% funds are going directly to the AAI club and less then 1000 runners partake. Anything outside of that like commercial races or rowing club fund raisers must obtain separate insurance. It would be a huge risk by both orginsations not to have adequate insurance.

No problem with a commercial event. For €40 though you'd expect something more than a lazy assed out of date website & entrants questions answered. I don't see this event continuing into the future if the current approach to customer service continues whereas the 3/4 in Athlone appears to be going from strength to strength.
Btw what time are u pacing?

Thanks for clearing that up Ger. Ready to go so!! By any chance was that you pacing the 4.30 group in Limerick this year?

I'd rather support a local rowing club who have a long, proud history in Limerick than this profit driven, overly-expensive commercial event out in UL which doesn't even seem to be too well organised.

Fair play and good luck in the race I guess :?

    Facts
The Urban run 10K is €20 on the day and €10 if you want the T-Shirt. Online is currently €20 + €1.40 Trans Fee + €11.00 if you want the T-Shirt
The Human Race 10K is €25 on the day including the Tech top. Online is currently €20 + €1.40 Trans Fee
Both are priced about the same.

Again no funds from either race go directly into Athletics which is really an opportunity missed by local AC clubs.

    All fair points.

But at least the proceeds of the SMRC Urban Run are going to a voluntary run local sports club and also a local charity, as opposed to somebody's pockets.

Excellent time Netwerk. 30K winner passed me with 2K to go in the half for 1:44 which is some running

Great time, I probably gave you a holler at some stage, some great running out there today. Well done!

I was at UL waiting for a few runners yesterday. At a very early stage the finish was a shambles. there was a guy with a scanner thing trying to catching everyone coming in to finish and a girl taking down bib numbers and times. It built up a bit so the scanner guy was missing people, the girl with the clipboard was loosing people's times. On top of this, a guy who was just outside the finish line was misdirecting runners so 10k people were continuing round the corner and some of the half and 30km people were heading into the finish area. I've been to many races and events over the years and never seen this craic before. For the later on finishers (2hr20 mark) the scanner guy was gone and girl just taking down bib numbers and times. I know alot of runners have their own watches and timing systems, but the people I was collecting are new to running distances and didn't have these and were terribly disappointed their times appear wrong and no evidence so far of the official times or splits.

Added to this, there were still only erecting crowd control barriers at 10.10 and trying to figure out how to tie on the orange netting. seems a very substandard event and @ 35e (plus service charge) not something they're recommending for future.

thanks for that, it wasn't there earlier when we checked. However, the times aren't accurate (for my runners anyway) - and no sign of the split times

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭xElDeeX

Race numbers and times only. Not linked to names, male/female, age category, club? That's a joke for 35 euro.
My local 6k road race did better than that and it was a fiver!

These are the provisional results, no names yet. There will be no split times as there was no timing mats.

Edit: full results will be posted tomorrow with names and cat.

Yep enjoyed route but after first lap you were on your own with the traffic through UL. Felt I was being forced off the road at times (no pavement) with oncoming traffic. No where near enough stewards, then again some fellow competitors need to learn how to drive. No chip timing. Late and confusing start.

Bored and unhappy looking girls manning the course. There were a couple near the flags who gave it beans all day though.

No hot drinks, no food except all you can eat bananas. Felt like a monkey at times.

Now this does bug me, I saw at least five guards given food vouchers. I saw one guard all day on the course at white gates entrance.

All in all a bit meh.

Contrast that with the St. Michael's 10k which was on at the same day ...

Excellent organisation, a huge amount of food (cakes, sandwiches, tea/coffee) for everybody afterwards, a great route (nearly did a PB!), friendly faces all round, and chip timing with the results out that evening. In general it was a great community effort, and all the proceeds went to volunteer-run local organisations.

No good to people who are preparing for Dublin who need/want to run 3 times that distance. A total of 172 ran the Urban Run 10K whereas 214 completed the 30K race in UL. Clearly there is a demand for the distance. Maybe a thought for next year or one of the local clubs might try and organise such a race.

The chip timing in St Micheals while done by a chip timing company appears to be Gun time also looking at the results as their is no nett time listed for anyone. Was there a metal gantry belonging to the chip timing company at the start line ?

The timing in UL was done the old fashioned way with a clicker and someone recording your number as you past. My time is correct for the race.

Your points regarding the food and stewarding and proceeds are valid.

There was a metal gantry at the finish, but we also passed through it about 90 seconds after the start. But I assume that it didn't effect anything. So, yes, it was a gun start alright and that probably only worked because of the low numbers. Everyone was bunched nice and tightly and it didn't take any time to reach the start line. For a bigger crowd it would have been an issue alright. I know the were aiming for 400 - 500 participants (including their 5k) and that's what they got, so it seems to have worked just fine.

Was the HM the correct distance, or just 2 of the 10k loops? I asked on their site but never got an answer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 751 ✭✭✭SeanPuddin

It was HM distance, extra distance was added on at the start, then 2 laps.

Still no proper results for this event; no sign of any response from the organisers in respect of the race being advertised as having chip timing or lucozade on the day!
What can be done about this total lack of respect to the partucipants?

This race has gone beyond a joke! It's Wednesday and still no official results. False advertising on chip timing and isotonic drinks, a goody bag with just a tech shirt in it and nothing else. Critical comments being deleted and not faced by the organisers.

I am not one to usually complain about races unless I have been sent 5 miles the wrong way but this event was a complete joke. A website that was never updated from 2013 and an astronomic entry fee for what you get. I believe there is definitely a case for a full refund for this event for false advertising. I won't go down that road but I will not be running it next year if it's still on(unlikely) and will advise all of my clubmates to avoid it. Everything for runners was skimped on to further line the pockets of the RD.

I will happily drive to Athlone for the 3/4 marathon which gets excellent reviews. Also, if you want to make your feelings known, rate the event on the Facebook page.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 751 ✭✭✭SeanPuddin

Yea it's unreal how bad it is. Negative reviews are removed on FB. No answers. No results.

I will actively be telling people to avoid this next year. Turned me off GLR also.

Some of the comments on their own website were pretty funny earlier. Not sure if they're removed yet.
