Can't really go wrong with the 3 strike games. Did anyone ever play the Amiga versions? They're really good, they look and sound much better than the megadrive versions.

megadrive was the better console imo , only thing snes had going for it was better jrpgs , and I was more impressed with phantasy star sprites than ff or chrono trigger

And Mario World 1&2/Kart/All Stars/RPG.. Contra III, Zelda, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Axelay, Super Star Wars, Castlevania,Turtles in Time to name but a few.
The SNES has some utterly superb games. So does the MD too I owned one as well but I always prefered the SNES, even though they're both great consoles.

Contra Hard Corps is better than Contra III.
Street Fighter II CE is as good as Turbo.
There are a million better MD shmups than Axelay.
Castlevania Bloodlines can almost rival Castlevania IV.
SOR2 is miles better than Turtles in Time.
The Sonic games kick Donkey Kong Country in the ass.

    Just sayin'...,

I'd put Bloodlines well ahead of Castlevania 4.

oh dont get me wrong , I love snes , I had one I just dont remember what games I had for it as much as MD. Super metroid and link to the past are two of favourite games of all time. Mario world is fantastic although my favourite mario game is mario bros 3 on the nes.

Both are fantastic systems , vastly different compared to what out now these days compared to sony and microsoft , back then it was worth owning the two systems , nowadays not so much.

I only just beat IV recently. It's not as... hmm... solid as Bloodlines. It's more experimental with a lot of levels not really working properly or just there to show off (and the collapsing staircase level near the end is borderline broken) and a lot of the bosses aren't that well thought out, some are tough, others are complete pushovers. Bloodlines on the other hand is just really well designed the whole way through and feels more like a traditional castlevania. Vania 4 feels quite different to anything else in the series.

And the first Donkey Kong Country isn't even that good.

Thought of another 1 - Bubsy. Loved that game!

Micro Machines with the extra 2 ports built into the cartridge for 4 Player was awesome.

Can't agree, the first two and Sonic CD were great but after that, meh. DKC just feels way more involving to play to me. some brilliant levels in those games.

Has no one mentioned The Lion King yet?

Great game - Rage inducingly hard in parts but great game nonetheless

sonic cd was weird , controlled and looked excellent but level design was a mess. I love sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles

I found the older country games to be quite similar to sonic games , I dunno why

    Golden Axe (any of them)
Skitchin' (like Road Rash except on rollerblades and slingshotting from cars, crowbars, baseball bats, cattle prods, etc as weapons)

Well if you add Sonic 3 and Knuckles you pretty much pointed out the Sonic games I was talking about anyway ;)

I've been playing DKC a lot again lately and although I do really still like the animation and music, the underlying gameplay I find very mediocre.

If you reskinned it to something less visually fancy and kept the same gameplay I think it'd be quite a dull game.

It's an extremely basic platformer. The only really good one in the series is the second and even at that I couldn't put it ahead of Sonic, well maybe Sonic CD because it's cack.

Has anyone mentioned Landstalker? Could never find it when it first came out but bought it on eBay a while ago. Absolutely marvelous RPG. Oh and I also sat down and completed Cannon Fodder...the later levels are devilishly tricky and addictive.

Landstalker is great but it gets maddening towards the end. Some real controller throwing annoyances there!

The Megadrive was best for me, better selection of games IMO and all the Arcade ports tipped it in Sega's direction, All the Magizines almost had me brainwashed in to getting a SNES as I had loved the nes before hand, they kept saying better Colours and Music and mode 7 wow!!! but why I played Strider and Sonic 1 I could not believe how good they looked. The SNES started out well with Super Mario world but things got serious when they release Street fighter 2. Lucky Special Champion Edition got released on Megadrive which contained both Championship and Hyper fighting edition so that made up for it.

The list the guys put up on the first page is almost perfect.
I would say Ecco and the sequel Ecco tides of time are 2 of the best games ever made so check them out. They are sci-fi adventure action RPG and not environmental save the whales nonsense that a lot of people thought at the time.

    Light crusader is great too.

Didn't the MD have a better sound chip apparently? I always thought the SNES sounded better myself, the voices in SF2CE on the Megadrive were really garbled compared to the snes ones

the MD did have some great sounding games though.

Christ no! The Megadrive's soundchip doesn't come close to the one in the Snes.

Programmers still managed to do some interesting stuff with it though.

Edit - just to add to that, it's the Megadrive's processor that's better.

Megadrive: Motorolla 68000 clock speed 7.67mhz
    Snes: 5A22 clock speed 3.58mhz

That is why Megadrive shmups and action games in general completely kick the rear end of Snes ones :pac:

It hard to argue whether the Megadrive or SNES had a better soundchip. They are both very different. The SNES's sound was totally based on sampling however it was put through a Sony compression algorithm to keep the size down so the sample quality was very low. Having real instruments though made it very versatile for doing orchestrated soundtracks. The Megadrive soundchip had sample channels but were mainly used for precussion. Everything else was generated by the chip, it was a proper synthesiser. It also meant the sound quality was a lot higher. However it was hard to code for, most of the best music came from the Japanese scene who had years of experience using the same chip on the PC-88. The Megadrive gets a bad name because Sega US created a sound tool called GENS that it gave out to licensees to create music if they were having trouble. Usually games that used this have terrible sound, that awful synthesised guitar stuff is usually GENS music.

Street Fighter 2 on the Megadrive is quite inferior to the SNES version. The sound and colours are way.

The SNES processor was woeful, it was nearly 8-bit being a 16-bit version of the CPU in the C64 and NES.

Boring Fact - Michael Jackson was supposed to the soundtrack for Sonic 3 but because the sound chip was fairly crap he cancelled the project.

There's a lot of analysis and comparisons to show that it's possible he did indeed take part in the project. But yeah, the quality of the sound chip is why he remained uncredited.

Edited - just read that he may have also had his name dropped from the credits due to all the scandals going on at the time.

The soundchip was good in the MD but it was not as advanced as the SNES one, the problem with street fighter was the lack of enough Channels to do the voices correctly as is evident if you play the beta where the voices are clear but take up one whole channel and cancel each other out. The beta also has better animations IMO but its a pity that capcom decided to remake the game so things looked more like the SNES version, also the MD version of special Championship edition does not suffer from slow down and has the voices in the right places, I think the SNES added sound effects and removed some voices that were present in the Arcades. Finally the MD version music is closer to the CPS sound where as everything on the SNES sounds like trumpets.
