    Hi all.

So a friend of mine got me a Megadrive 2 for my birthday since I never had one and was more of a Ninty head back then.

Wondering if you guys could recommend some great (albeit, cheap) games for me to try out?

Also, anyone know if I can get a wireless controller for the system?

    Thanks for any help!

Streets of Rage has it's fans but I'd advise against it!

I'll omit crazy expensive stuff, this is all very affordable.

All the Sonic games, except Spinball and Sonic 3D (Shudder)
    Streets of Rage 1 & 2
The Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer & Shinobi III
    Comix Zone
    Gunstar Heroes
    Phantasy Star IV
    Castle of Illusion
    Mega Turrican
    Mercs
    Ranger X
    Ristar
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Mega Bomberman
    The Story of Thor
    Quackshot
    Ghouls n' Ghosts
    Strider
    Road Rash II
    Contra Hard Corps
    Dynamite Heddy
    Thunderforce IV
    Herzog Zwei

If you're a Nintendo man you probably haven't played most of them :)

I'd add to o1s1n's list with Soleil/ crusader of centy,

    Splatterhouse 2
    Earthworm Jim

Those just happen to be the 2 sitting beside my tv right now. Great system with some great games. Theres a list of games going around on this forum, just search a bit, afaik it was a petty definitive list

You might say I'm not much of a fan of the series...
I try to keep that opinion to myself though, don't want to upset too many people who love it hereabouts....

Still, Gunstar Heroes.... 6/10 game really.... ;)

Try to get Vectorman, 1 and 2, and try Gauntlet4. A lot of people don't "get" Gauntlet, but my brother and I were obsessed with it.
We also had the Golden Axe games, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage. All brillliant. Most of these should be dirt cheap now, not that I've checked prices.

The first one probbly hasnt aged well at all, love the 2nd, still play it every now and then. Never been a fan of the 3rd game though.

    Awesome recommendations lads, thanks!
Ristar, always wanted to play that but kept calling it Starfy so could never find it lol.

Mate was telling me to get a lot of the Disney/Capcom games as they are great for 2 player with my young nephew. So gonna look into a few Mickey mouse games of course.

Also might get a master system converter later on, get into some of the older games if I can find a converter on the super cheap.

I don't think I'll become a collector for the Megadrive so boxes are not important.

How's RAGE with its Megadrive prices at the moment?

Also, I'll be getting Micro Machines, think it was the second one that was just awesome.

Again, thank for the recommendations guys!

There's not many Disney games on the Megadrive that are two player. World of Illusion is the only one I can think of which is fantastic. Most of the sega developed ones are very good, the exception being Fantasia which is arse. Some people like the later Shiny/Virgin games but I feel they have aged poorly and aren't much fun.

Rage prices are pretty crappy at the moment. Best thing to do with getting a new console is to get one with a load of games cheap. Rage only sell the base console and maybe one game for quite a bit, you can get a good bundle for the same price if you wait for a good one.

I'd recommend modding it for 60Hz so the games run at the correct speed and getting a RGB cable for it. RF and AV composite will look horrendous.

Thanks for the advice! Kinda know nothing about modding tbh, and I'm getting the Megadrive II from a friend as a birthday present in a few weeks so it won't be modding but has all the cables and controllers etc.

I know Rage do deals on console with games. But are they bad with prices for just carts?

    Alien Storm
Shining Force & Shining force 2
    Shining in the Darkness
    Super Thunder Blade
    Wings of Wor
    Fatal Labyrinth
    Castle of Illusion
Mickey and Donald world of illusion
    Golden Axe
    Ecco The Dolphin
    Altered Beast

O1s1n List is to the point , I like to add this with it

It will probably come with a RF cable or AV composite cable at most which is going to look terrible on a CRT. On a LCD it will look absolutely shocking. You can get a RGB scart cable from ebay to very little and it will be the best thing you can invest in.

You can always look into modding later, there's people here that can help you out but just know that PAL systems play games 20% slower than American ones, 60Hz makes a massive difference.

As for Rage, they are hit and miss with prices, mostly miss. The games they sell are usually a bit more expensive than on ebay or wildly more expensive but every so often they are decent. Their carts though tend to be in pretty bad shape.

    Look for Aladdin!

Also, can't go wrong with a bit of Cannon Fodder, Desert Strike, Alien Storm, Columns (love the music to this day).

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Do people actually still like Alien Storm? I found it pretty ropey even back in the day.

Aladdin is a game that looks great up like all the Dave Perry platformers it's very basic. The SNES version might not look as good but it's a far better game imo.

Only ever played the arcade version and never liked it. Aliens by Konami is far better (which isn't on the MD I don't think).

I always thought the SNES version was a much prettier game myself.

There's a little 2nd hand games store near where I live that has a Megadrive for the princely sum of $30, which is about 23 euro. It'd be a US/Canadian version so 60hz, am really tempted to get one. If I see a snes in there for the same money I'll definitely pick one up.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The Megadrive version has much better animation than the SNES version, apparently the Disney animators helped out with the animation.

The SNES version is prettier in stills, the Megadrive version looks better running.
Megadrive version sounds better too with the licensed tracks.

I'm with Retr0 on the SNES one being the better game though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,447 ✭✭✭richymcdermott

megadrive was the better console imo , only thing snes had going for it was better jrpgs , and I was more impressed with phantasy star sprites than ff or chrono trigger

We'd have to agree to disagree on that one, the Megadrive had some great titles alright, but IMHO it's best didn't compare to the best the SNES had to offer.
But that's all off topic anyway. OP's getting a MD, which they'll probably love! :D

Each console wins out in specific genres due to hardware abilities (or lack of) but the SNES wins out overall. It just had more games in the 'possibly the greatest game of all time' category.

And this is coming from a huge Megadrive fan :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,447 ✭✭✭richymcdermott

I owned a Snes but I do not even remember any games for it I played for it outside of super mario all star collection.

there is nothing on the system I loved more than sonic and the other games I had for it.

sorry for off topic comment :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

In fairness, we were spoiled then, as they were both fantastic consoles.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The Megadrive was mostly Western games which at the time couldn't match what japan was producing with a good few exceptions. There's a few games like Contra Hard Corp and Gunstar Heroes where the SNES can't match them for quality in their respective genres. However The SNES wins out in sheer numbers of quality titles and also quirky interesting ones. It also probably has more best game of all time contenders than any other system. It just had much better support from the top developers of the time with Konami, Capcom etc. Sega really only had it's own internal development and Treasure as real standouts (although when Konami did start developing for the megadrive they produced some crackers like Rocket Knight and Castlevania the New Generation, a much better vania than Super Vania 4).

Not to say the Megadrive wasn't a great system. I'd put it up there with the PS3 or PSP but the SNES for me is in the upper echelons with the PS2 and DS.

I got a Megadrive as a present recently, and even though I had one back in the day I couldn't remember many of the games I played on it.

It was the complete opposite with the SNES though. I could remember pretty much everything about the games I had played. I prefer the Disney games on the SNES too. I can still remember finishing Aladdin on the SNES.

Still, both great systems in their own ways.

You could pick up the Mega Games cartridges too. 3/6 good games on one cart and they don't sell for much.

Can't really go wrong with the 3 strike games. Did anyone ever play the Amiga versions? They're really good, they look and sound much better than the megadrive versions.

And Mario World 1&2/Kart/All Stars/RPG.. Contra III, Zelda, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Axelay, Super Star Wars, Castlevania,Turtles in Time to name but a few.
The SNES has some utterly superb games. So does the MD too I owned one as well but I always prefered the SNES, even though they're both great consoles.

Contra Hard Corps is better than Contra III.
Street Fighter II CE is as good as Turbo.
There are a million better MD shmups than Axelay.
Castlevania Bloodlines can almost rival Castlevania IV.
SOR2 is miles better than Turtles in Time.
The Sonic games kick Donkey Kong Country in the ass.

    Just sayin'...,

I'd put Bloodlines well ahead of Castlevania 4.

oh dont get me wrong , I love snes , I had one I just dont remember what games I had for it as much as MD. Super metroid and link to the past are two of favourite games of all time. Mario world is fantastic although my favourite mario game is mario bros 3 on the nes.

Both are fantastic systems , vastly different compared to what out now these days compared to sony and microsoft , back then it was worth owning the two systems , nowadays not so much.

I only just beat IV recently. It's not as... hmm... solid as Bloodlines. It's more experimental with a lot of levels not really working properly or just there to show off (and the collapsing staircase level near the end is borderline broken) and a lot of the bosses aren't that well thought out, some are tough, others are complete pushovers. Bloodlines on the other hand is just really well designed the whole way through and feels more like a traditional castlevania. Vania 4 feels quite different to anything else in the series.

    Golden Axe (any of them)

Well if you add Sonic 3 and Knuckles you pretty much pointed out the Sonic games I was talking about anyway ;)

I've been playing DKC a lot again lately and although I do really still like the animation and music, the underlying gameplay I find very mediocre.

If you reskinned it to something less visually fancy and kept the same gameplay I think it'd be quite a dull game.
