"John Delaney could run anything. He could run UEFA. Easily."

Two obvious typos. It should read:

"John Delaney could ruin anything. He could ruin UEFA. Easily."

While the state of the national team is obviously not the only criteria in the judgement of the CEO of the FAI, how much weight should it be given?

Teh national team has continued to slide down the rankings. While he has been instrumental in getting the new stadium built, teams like Arsenal (I'm not comparing them in football terms) showed that the team can remain competitive whilst having to be constrained by budget.

At this point, given the years he has been in the job, is the lack of high quality players coming through for the senior team, seen as an inditement of the overall effectiveness of the FAI and therefore its CEO.

Ah would ya schtop. A bit of debt is nothing to be ashamed of. The economy just took a bad turn, that's all.

Look at the League of Ireland. The league winning team gets prize money of €100k, Delaney earns €360k a year. In fact his wage is greater than the cumulative prize money for the entire LOI. He's a joke of a CEO

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,944 ✭✭✭✭4zn76tysfajdxp

Doesn't the winning team of the LoI get something like €100,000 where he's on a half a mil salary or something? Something rotten there.

    edit: snap

The affiliation fee for the following year then comes out of that and back to the FAI and I think that's €19,000. Joke of association.

I think he has a point.

FAI = Joke: Delaney, UEFA = Joke: Plantini.

Two shameful organisations, both poorly ran so I don't see how Delaney would be any different to UEFA than Plantini.

Perhaps the only stumbling block would be trying to placate the whole of Europe with a few cans of Carlsberg on a train.

Absolutely insane. I didn't realise it was that bad. Let's not forget that the majority of the top flight clubs in the country are far from healthy as well and it looks like the FAI is doing little to force/help them resolve their respective situations.

The FAI looks at the senior international team as the cash cow and the rest of the game can do what it likes. Alas, the senior international team is not bring in the crowds, with the last two home games attracting 30K people in total. They have sold just over 10K season tickets which are far cheaper than they were when they were introduced years ago. The FAI is probably banking on the English, Poles and Scots bringing large numbers to their respective games, as it will give them some much needed revenue. The English game might sell out actually because it's England and it'll attract the usual clown element from here.

Yep. And only the top three places in the premier league pay more than €19,000 in prize money. Which means unless you get top three, you're already at a loss before paying stewards, gardai, utilities etc.

+1 on this. How does this **** still go on in this day and age? Is there actually nothing that can be done? Irish clubs cant be happy with his leadership. If they even combined to boycott 1 weekend of football to highlight the hypocrisy and to shame the FAI golden circle into change

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,061 ✭✭✭keith16

It's infuriating. Countries like Cyprus, Slovenia and Scotland are able to produce clubs that qualify for the Champions / Europa League.

Fines all round. The FAI have the clubs by the balls with the participation agreement.

If any country wants to take him, they're welcome to him.

The LoI has been run into the ground as it is, the resources available to clubs are dwindling every year and it wouldn't surprise me if one or two teams folded in the next few years. Sure look at what happened with Cork City FC, the fans ended up pooling cash to reform them, not a bit of help from the FAI.

Delaney is an overpaid cowboy running a tin pot organisation. Its absolutely f**kin ridiculous how he proclaims himself to be some sort of messiah whilst domestic football struggles. His job could be done for a fifth of what he commands. He predicts the FAI to take in €40m in revenue this year which is probably bull**** How much of that will go to service the debt currently held?

A pure chancer and them Independent articles were just bizarre. Maybe O'Brien is lining him up for Politics or even Irish Water when he eventually acquires it.

Quite sure I've heard Delaney's salary quoted at around €450,000 a year... even higher than the €360,000 figure being thrown around. Took a quick check just on Wikipedia which says this also, and which says that is higher than the heads of the Italian (!) and Spanish (!!) FAs by about €100,000.

As in the heads of two of the biggest national footballing associations in the world, with clubs at the top end in a position to spend tens, even hundreds of millions, due to both being among the five most popular leagues in the world.

Meanwhile, Delaney earn more than either of these despite the prize money for winning our league coming to about less than half of what some individuals players in either of those countries make each and every week.

He took a cut when he signed his new 5 year contract this summer. €360,000 now. Generous John.

The worst part is some of the fans are such idiots, Delaney buying them a pint of handing out a tray of carlsberg is enough for them to think he's a legend.

I wonder did any other associations President go out drinking on the streets all night. Jesus Christ a bit of decorum man.

Then in this interview the following morning he starts requesting that UEFA bestow some sort of recognition on the Irish supporters because they're the best in the world.

Good man John the domestic league in sh1te and the Aviva like a ghost town.

It's the way of the FAI. My mate was a physio for the u17 ireland team during a european championships before. He said the FAI brought a load of officials, all flying first class and staying in 5 star hotels. He said they were out on the beer every night, didn't go to any games and didn't even know who Ireland were playing!

Fantastic argument right there for cutting his wages. Please, someone take him off our hands, I don't care whether it's UEFA, FIFA, the UN, RTE, BBC, anyone!
