With 2GB of Ram, 16GM in-built storage (expandable via card slot), KitKat OS & 4K support, I think this is a great price for what you are getting.

Gearbest replied back to my email saying they are also offer a MINIX NEO X8-H with a free Air Mouse media player kit like this
    http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box/pp_62109.html

Use coupon code at checkout: GBX8HLG , the price will be €110.63 with free shipping

    Really a great price IMO.

    2GB RAM
    16GB Storage (expandable)
    Built in Wifi
    KitKat OS 4.4
    HDMI port
    Wall adapter-powered

Full specs & purchase links here:

I have used Gearbest before without any trouble, so I think I will be ordering myself one of these!

Gonna bite the bullet on one of these shortly.. but you could get seriously stung for duty there presumably.

First Irish result I googled, and it's not much more!

Good price for that too, I emailed Gearbest asking for a coupon code though so I will see what they say!

You can get it here for £102 http://www.futeko.com/products/MP053.php

This is shipped from the UK so there wont be any customs charges

^^ I have heard only good things about the Irish seller. If they somehow manage to redure it a little to be somewhat on par with UK seller then I dont think anyone even look anywhere.

I bought one from here and it's a lot cheaper but took 3/4 weeks to arrive. We'll worth the wait though. dhgate.com/product/xbmc-installed-mx2-cs838-4-2-os-android-smart/170180603.html#

Sorry can't post the full address, just put the www. before the above.

can this play media files from a nas (samba/upnp) without needing them re-encoded by the likes of a plex or twonky server?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 333 ✭✭Zilog

Using media playback software such as XBMC and MX Player, many formats can be played without re- encoding.
Other programs e.g.Netflix will playback SD only (no HD) due to DRM restrictions

I've got one from GearBest, till now runs pretty great. 2+16 memory and free air mouse, really a big deal!
Firmware 4k Player plays 4K movies fine. Also you are with android phone all apps that you have with your account work great in it..Great one! Love it!

Damn it! Just brought one from another shop, much higher than this €110.63, what? gearbest even offer you a M1 Air Mouse for free? Can I ask for a refund? I want this one!!!

That's a bit of a pisser, it that the same with all android boxes??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

would this be far better than the android box that was advertised here a few weeks back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭reni10

Netflix will play HD on Android if you have Android version 4.3 or higher I believe

Yes, better specs, design and support.
But at over 2x the cost it would want to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

Thanks for that - big jump in price alright. Would have to be clear on what I wanted it for

Please note Netflix HD will not play on these boxes. Not sure why but according to Minix this is down to Netflix. They are currently in talks with Netflix about becoming a certified platform and this will allow HD......

Hi guys, I am looking for a TV BOX. I am a student, and my budget is no more than $150( including a remote and air mouse will be better). Do not know so sure which one should get in, but my friends told me MINIX NEO X8-H could be a good choice.

    Here are my some requirements:
    1. Smooth, Fast Playback of 1080p movies

    2. screen mirroring

    3. Watching movies and tv-series using some android apps

    4. Skype\Facebook\Youtube apps

    5. Easy to use remote, can easily type text

    6. YouTube and other video-streaming sites like Vimeo, Hulu

Any other good recommendation about that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 757 ✭✭✭Denisoftus

4K at 30p, hm - pointless. But apart from that should be great box for the price.

gonna bite the bullet and get one of these today - where would be the best place to buy? I know Gearbest is €110 after coupon but would this take ages to arrive, and have potential custom issues? Thinking I might be better off with the futeko.com option

I got off Futeko, bought it via ParcelMotel, its free shipping in UK but 8.99 pound to Ireland so cheaper via PM. I ordered on the Sunday and had on Tuesday evening.

No risk of customs as well. Think it worked out all in for about €140. There is cheaper options via China but you have to wait ages(I ordered one before from geekbuying and I was a month waiting) and also if you hit customs you may end up paying more than via Futeko. I hated the wait, when I buy something I want it NOW :-)

    http://www.futeko.com/products/MP053.php

great box so far, one thing to note is the firmware needed to be upgraded. I didn't first and tried to build but was having loads of issue, quick firmware update and it has been flying since

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Slipshaney

Thanks Nelly - Im like you and dont think I can wait!

Im (pretty) technical so hope not to have any issues when you upgraded did you have to reinstall everything, and if so, was this straighforward?

There is 2 threads running on the Minix at the moment, I posted the below on the other thread, fire me a PM if you want to discuss...as mentioned below your best just doing a full update once you take it out of the box....the firmware loads back on all the preloaded app's....so you will have Minix XBMC

Also to note, if you do a non-wipe version it will not have Minix XBMC installed, but you can download this easy from the same website

    Official Firmware
    http://www.minixforum.com/threads/neo-x8-x8-h-002-beta-8-firmware-20140809.27/

This is official firmware. No idea how it works. These are still in Beta, there is no official date for when the non-beta version will be released

    Un-Official firmware
    http://www.minixforum.com/threads/update-10-aug-2014-x8-h-flashable-zip-for-neo-x8-h.98/

I installed this version on box, easy to install. I done a full wipe and started again, I would expect if you try to keep app's on the system it will cause issues so better off starting off fresh. But your decision.

Brilliant thanks for that - might get in touch once the box arrives

So how much you get it for all?

Think it was about 135 euro and then 3.50 for parcel motel - came with the m1 mouse also.

That was not bad, but the price seems beyond my budget. Guess I am willing to wait longer for a better price.

Definitely thinking of picking this up but I have a few spare small machines (Dell Hybrid, Mac Mini) with a greater spec to these boxes.

Is there much of an advantage over picking an X8-H up over using on of these spare machines and just installing XBMC and relevent plugins on it?

I would like to try new good things, and believe X8-H can give me a great experience, that's all I think!

I am thinking of buying one of these ,what is the min. broadband speed you would need ?
Gearblast seem to be the cheapest option but there could be customs charges ,is there anywhere else that I should be looking ?

A guy in work bought one of these last week from aliexpress and gave it to me for a few days - he asked me to set it up for him.

I set up the most popular video add ons in xbmc and installed the latest version of showbox.

While the hardware itself is impressive, good build and very snappy performance, I had a lot of reservations about the services. Nearly everything I clicked on either hung on 'working', said 'script failed' or asked for capcha codes.

I only spent a few hours with it so its very possible I hadn't set it up right but I wouldn't buy one based on the experience. I'm sticking with ps3 streaming from pc. Just my 2 cents.
