Why is it called "thanks" anyway? Shouldn't it be "like"?

Poster A: Man goes into a bar... blah blah blah...
    Poster B: hahahahahahahaha thanks!

I'm tempted to go through this thread "Thanking" posts just to make all the calculations wrong :p

    Probably this

    One post and 770 thanks

Some people are miscalculating. It's total posts divided by number of times thanked.

    For me at the time of writing, it's 3572 / 761 = 4.7

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,973 ✭✭✭✭bnt

8,200 thanks over 8,000 total posts, so I suppose I'm ahead overall. I'm curious about how common that is?

Anyone up for a good old fashioned thanks invasion? Link to a random post in a quiet forum and we all thank it. For example here - guys response to thread 'need to buy carpet for floor of a 2010 ford mondeo'. Let's give him the thanks he deserves.

Well that now is a very interesting post and deserves a big thumbs up thanks alright.

But we're derailing this thread now :o

There was a thread before where some lad was talking about parking available in Galway, it got something like 100+ thanks, I couldn't stop laughing every time I looked at it. Peoples reactions were the best part, they couldn't understand what was happening.

Dev surely must be up there with 2,500+ thanks for a single post.

This sounds like a post worth reading, do you mind directing me to it? Thanks

    Cheers for that Ted :)

I'm not usually one for the whole 'thanks' thing, and sometimes I think a post deserves more than just a +1, or a thank or a like, and that post was one of them.

Thank you both very much, definitely worth the read and the deserved high number of thanks.

Agreed. Or a "thumbs up". Never understood the "thanks" name for it.

Agreed. Or a "thumbs up". Never understood the "thanks" name for it.
It's like, "thanks for explaining it so well" or, "thanks for saving me from writing that" or, "thanks for that story, I lol'd", etc.

Although "like" would seem to make more sense, overall.

Pretty sure people are doing this wrong. You can't look at the

Thanked X amount of times in Y posts and divide X by Y.

Instead divide X by the total number of all posts not the total amount of thanked posts.

3170 posts (not including this one). 12047 thanks.

    3.8

Thanks aint nothing but a number, the reflected glory of your peers, the gilted edge of deceit which embroiders the faded glitter on the attire which clings to the sucking vacuum of your soul!

Just so everybody is on the same page, to calculate your thanks to posts ratio, go to your profile and divide your "total posts" figure into your "total thanks" figure, and include it in your post.

    (total thanks/total posts)

I'll get the ball rolling with a dismal...0.348 thanks per post

I have 1512 posts and have been thanked 2157 times in 533 posts.

    Using the above formula 1512/2157 = 0.70097

    Am I doing this right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,106 ✭✭✭catallus

    Shouldn't that be 2157/1513 = 1.42564442?

According to the formula its total thanks divided by total posts so I think its 1513/2157, but I stand to be corrected.

No that would give you posts per thank. What you're looking for is thanks per post.

Ffs some of you guys are thick
