Adverts has a fairly decent selection of retro titles on it, and prices are negotiable, often with collection of meet ups to exchange money and goods.
In town you have Bookmart and Gamesexchange, The RAGE (expensive) and a few dotted around the capital like Retropolis, although that is now based on Adverts you can pick up in Dublin as far as I know.
Also, keep your eyes on Sunday markets and Charity shops.

Get yourself a prepaid visa card like the o2 money card, you just top it up like phone credit and you're free to buy online with no bills. As ciderman said the only bricks and mortar shops in Dublin would be the RAGE on fade street or Gamesexchange on Talbot street. Be prepared to pay more for games though. Also if you're going into 5th year I'm guessing you're 16/17 so just be careful if you're going to meet up with people online from adverts deals or whatever.

You can register to use Adverts, any age can.
Then you can browse the ads and arrange deals there.
If you get over 50 posts you can also use the Marketplace here in the Arcade and Retro forum, there's some good deals to be had there.

Are there are any decent markets in Dublin on the weekends?

You should be able to, at least you used to. If not it's the same as setting up a facebook/boards account. Adverts itself is not a site you buy from directly like ebay or whatever, people just advertise items for sale, you then contact the seller and arrange to meet or organize postage.

Why can't you buy online using a Visa Debit card which is the standard card received from banks these days?

You can buy a prepaid card, stick your few bob onto it and use it online.
Otherwise just keep your eyes on the Marketplace and Adverts, set a budget and you'll be fine, run any deals by the regulars here to see if you're getting a good deal or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

You've gotta be over 18 for a visa debit card, since when?

My child has received a Visa Debit Card – can they use this card to go overdrawn on their account?
No, this card will not allow your child to go overdrawn on their account. It will give them the ability to withdrawn cash at an ATM and it will also allow them to purchase goods online, over the phone or in stores but ONLY where they have sufficient funds available to do so.

Debit card, not credit card. Big difference :)

Neither are credit cards to be fair. With either a debit card(under the age of 18) or a prepaid card (like swirl card/o2 money card) you have to actually have money to spend it. You can't spend money that you don't have like you could with a credit card.

    Master of the Universe

Might be time to sit down with the parents and tell them you're old enough to start managing your own money! Everyone should have a bank account/Debit card by the time they're in 5th year, prepare you for the big bad world and all that ;)

Looks like The Rage walk in shop and Adverts.ie are your only real options so.

The Rage has a good selection but a lot of the stuff is more expensive then you'll pay for it on ebay.

You're allowed to legally work at the age of 15(maybe younger these days, I dunno), cant believe you don't have a bank account. I think I'd a bank account from 1st year.
anyway look on adverts, sometimes there's genuinely bargains but you've gott be quick, there are saved searches which notify you by email so they can be handy if you are looking for something specific.

The thrift shop facing LIDL on Moore St sometimes has older gear. Granted, they were trying to flip a GCN bundle for €50, so it might not be a destination, but perhaps worth keeping an eye on.

Cash Encounters had older stuff when they were based on Talbot St, but since the move to Parnell, they seem to have dumped all of it. Again, it might behoove you to throw an odd visit in, see if they're reintroducing it.

The Comic Book stall in Blackrock market sells everything from Amiga to PS3, is well-priced and the guy running it is very, very sound. Heavily limited stock, but definitely earns a mosey about.

If you're on a limited budget start off with the common essentials. Stuff like Sonic on the megadrive or Starwing on the SNES and build your collection from there.

    I'd start with:

    SNES
    Super Mario World
    Super Mario All Stars
    Super Metroid
    A Link To The Past
    Axelay
    Donkey Kong Country
    Contra III
    Chrono Trigger
    Street Fighter 2 Turbo
    Turtles In Time

    Megadrive
    Flashback
    Gunstar Heros (absolutely essential)
    Sonic 2
    Road Rash 2
    Zombies Ate My Neighbours
Comix Zone (think that's hard to get though)
    World of Illusion
    Ristar
    Quackshot
    Desert Strike

    That'd get ya started nicely.

edit: oh, and Streets of Rage 2 on the Megadrive, can't believe I forgot that.

What would be the average prices for the games?

I'm not a collector but that really depends, something really popular and easy to get shouldnt be too expensive but it depends on where you get them really. Some shops can vastly overprice things that shouldnt be more than 10-15 quid, if even that. Car boot sales are probably a good bet, people sell lots of stuff they find in their attic.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Have you seen the stupid prices Chrono Trigger on the SNES goes for? Not really one to be recommending to someone with money issues! Also Zombies Ate My Neighbours is better on the SNES imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Tomo.Murphy

To be fair, the whole SNES list would be €20-30+ each in a shop here. The last time I saw Metroid in the rage they wanted €80-90 boxed in dodgy condition.

Oh, another one, Oxfam Home on Francis St have a dedicated, tiny section for retro games that goes all Doge with the 'Collector's Items: Rare' (It was literally barely bigger than a shoe box on my last visit). They're just in front of the CD/DVD shelf on a table, and everything is around 7 quid, or well, their Dreamcast stuff was last time I was in there. Their PSP stuff, however, is scattered amongst the DVDs.

The charity shops up that way, on the Thomas St area, have been pretty kind to me in terms of PS2 stuff. A couple of the shopping arcades on Meath Street sell games. One is on your left as you're walking toward Thomas St nearest the turn off from Liberties College that sells mostly PS3/360 stuff, and there's another further up near Ladbrokes that sells a lot of PS2-era sport shovelware, but it's trade-in kinda things, so I imagine there's plenty of stock turnover.

I go to the oxfam home there a lot of the time and find nutting been dead for a few weeks wish me luck tommrow , the ones on Thomas street are good but there 3 euro a pop avaragly.

My local ones are 1 euro, 2 for Ds, and I'm the only one buying from them, was told I'm the only one looking by staff lol.

P.s most likely the least retro collector here, but I have a key advice, pick a system also disk based is system will be easyer to find games for.

I collect gamecube, wii, ps1 and my main collection is ps2. There much less compotition for them at the moment vs cart based systems.
