How the hell are people who go to Starbucks considered hipsters?its not some niche, jazz playing independent coffee shop staffed by starving ortists, its a bland multi-national chain in the same vein as McDonalds,Burger King,Subway etc.

because there is not precise definition of what hipster is. anyone who looks like a hipster is considered a hipster. and that includes loads of men that wear narrow jeans, throusers and journalists with expensive slash stylish glasses. and you can squiz a bunch of geeks with cool glasses in there like university students and like.

I personally don't have a problem with Starbucks. You know exactly what you are getting when you walk in the door.

Where I live and work I go to a couple of small independent places but if I am someplace I don't know then it's a crap shoot as to the quality of the coffee (and there is some muck out there)..

I find Costa can be very inconsistent. I was in Limerick recently and the coffee was so bitter as to be undrinkable.

What ever else you say about Starbucks the coffee is always consistent no matter where you get it. and to be honest I actually like there coffee...

Part of the franchise agreement terms are you have to open a new store every two years.

They are contracted to expand aggressively

I wonder if potential franchisees have to go through an interview process like the below?

Find their coffee weak and bland.

Only drink it if no other option.

    It depends what you order.

Their cappuccinos are way too milky though.

For a proper cappuccino just order a flat white.

Actually I was in a Starbucks a while ago. I had my food/drink on the table and I was rooting through my bag for something.

After a while I became aware of the disheveled looking guy at the next table. He kept looking over at my plate. After a while he goes "that looks really good". I said "yeah it does". Then he goes "would you mind if I tried a bit?" I was really taken aback, but then he said "I'm sorry, I'm really hungry". I felt sorry for him so I cut it in half and gave it to him. He kept calling me a star and we had a brief chat about where I'm from.

After a while a Starbucks employee comes over and orders him to leave. He grabbed him by the arm. The guy starts roaring that working for a corporation like Starbucks is stupid.

I found the scene kind of upsetting.

.....so starbucks can go back to america, the same for mcdonalds. ireland needs to open something traditional irish.

Here here,I'm suggesting a chain of State Sponsored IREL "Traditional Irish" Coffee Shops.....(Those of a certain age will recall the jingle....:) )

I think you're mistaking people with macbooks for hipsters. A proper hipster would avoid Starbucks like the plague.

You n me bud. It's cafes all the way. Kaffs that is not the poncy French way of speaking. Weak tea, instant coffee and a hang sandwich is living the dream.

I would love to blind test the coffee "experts" on the problems with Starbucks.

Me, since you asked. Tea at home, beer in pubs, free coffee at work.

Why is there so many starbucks everywhere? Not just Dublin, any city, they're everywhere. I only use them because they are everywhere, it's like you have no choice. At the airport or the train station or something and you want to grab a coffee, it's starbucks or nothing. And they don't charge extra for soy milk but that's a lame reason too because they sure charge enough anyways. The name thing does grate on me, it's such a cheap ploy, and I have one of the most simplest names ever and they still get it wrong.

Precisely. A grotty one-off coffee shop is where "hipsters" would go.
Since when was there a major need for coffee? It's not like its a major component of the human diet
People enjoy it. It is a very nice drink.

As for the Starbucks in the university, I can never understand the people who queue there for ages to fork out nearly €3 for hot frothed milk with a suspicion of caffine when they can get perfectly good coffee a minute away in Smokies for less than half the price.

Because it's sheep we're up against.

Blame the cast of Friends and their faux, lounge lifestyle in Central Perk.

I do hope Insomnia - with their vastly superior coffee - can repel the tentacles of the green mermaid.

I was in the queue for starbucks the other day with my sister, my parents gave her a more unique special name than me, but she turns to me and goes......what will I say my name is? :pac:

franchise shop is easier to open and make money on than make a new business from beginning. no need to worry about systems, shop name those type of things.

I believe their plan is to open up lots of small ones around the city centre to squeeze out the competition and eventually when the competition is gone they'll migrate these into a couple of bigger ones. A very aggressive business strategy. I've lost count of the number of them in the Dame Street, Westmoreland Street and O'Connell Street areas. I actually like their coffee but their food is awful. In general the coffee shop business is booming in Dublin.

Thankfully that model didn't work on Mespil Road. The Starbucks there shut down earlier this year because it was always empty.
People preferred to go to the other coffee shopa few doors down - much cheaper and far nicer coffee and food.

Their tactic seems to be open so many stores so you have no choice but to go there, so many times I've gone there because nothing else is around or most independent coffee shops close early, there's a load of places near Harcourt street that close as early as 3 o clock. Whereas Starbucks is starting to go 24 hours.

They moved it around the corner to Waterloo Road. Hardly counts as a shutdown.

McCafe sell the most coffee in the world. They overtook Starbucks about two years ago. Personally I like their coffee, it's well made, reasonable cost & tasty. The only problem with it is you have to go into a McDonalds to get it. I'd much rather they had standalone stores.

I like Starbucks though. Cost & trendiness aside, the customers and staff are nice, coffee is decent & consistent. It's not a regular occurrence for me, but I do like their seasonal specials.

Costa has me right now with their iced cappuccino. It's particularly good. I've recently started hitting the cinema on Wednesday mornings and grab one on the way in (odeon), better than a bucket of coke.

    Didn't realise that!
Is it ever busy? I love the independent place on Mespil Road. Always queues out the door whenever I'm in that neck of the woods.
