Got my snow fix up in Cruagh Woods ( Dublin Mountains ) yesterday :)

    337136.jpg

    337135.jpg

A few inches of snow in all shaded areas and at the top of the mountain there were some snow drifts nearly 2 feet! :)

Those wind conditions I was telling Villain last night... yep, I'd say he is feeling it right now (if they make the top, it will be very extreme indeed up there

Pretty extreme alright, see attached, wind speed and chill factor.

Didn't make it to the top it was pretty rough and visibility further up was looking tricky so decided to be sensible and head back.

Got some photos and videos I'll post later.

I had a go pro for some of the trip today, uploaded at 2x speed to YouTube.

Not great but gives an idea of the conditions. First time using a go pro and didn't start at the bottom as was unsure of battery life.

It was a bit chilly on top all right, -3.1C not taking windchill into account.

Was that you cleaning the windows up there?

Was up there today, it was the worst conditions I have ever seen on an Irish mountain. The wind was so strong it was hard to stand, the wind chill according to the mountains web site was -15 and it felt like that.

Lots of snow and plenty of ice. the ice on some of the marker post was horizontal and about two foot long.

i have to say it was really fantastic and would encourage anyone who knows what they are doing to take a trip up lugnaquilla before the snow goes, but be prepared with good jacket, boot, gloves etc. Maybe wait for the wind to die a bit.

It's pointing East - maybe telling us where the wind will soon come from!

Actually I was facing North when I took that photo (thanks to a fancy camera that records both GPS coords and direction!), so it looks more like it's facing SW, i.e. wind was from the NE when it formed.

Drove from The Lookout along the Military Road today. Quite a bit of melt, but cars were getting stuck on the final ascent to the Lough Bray carpark. I gave up, did a U turn and came home. Some idiot reversed the wrong way down the road for ages before he eventually decided that was not such a brilliant idea.

Great shot, reminds me of the first time i climbed croagh Patrick 6 yes ago.
Nice and calm on the ground but up at the top it was like the north pole with near gale force winds. Would love to go up again in similar conditions.

Yeah it's light refraction from ice crystals in cirrus clouds. Was many a night like this in 2010.

I must say that the hype over a few cms of snow is amusing in light of daily conversations I have with my wife at present.
Her parents have had a foot of snowfall every night for the past week and life just carries on as normal.
How would we manage if it happened here.
