240Hz ROG monitor. Wonder if I bought that would I stop being **** at CS:GO? Probably not...
is it real 240hz or 120hz interpolated? the latter is only a gimmick IMO
What is this monitor exactly? Is it 1440p? Is it like 30inches, I must know :)

    Why am I awake...Anyways!

500 dollars but 1080P. I'd use it as a second monitor for gaming but I'd want a 1440p beside it in this day in age.
VESA wall-mountable to save on desktop space plus ergonomically-designed stands with full tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustment

    Thank god for that.

Good watch as always from your man. Vega might actually be the usual AMD disappointed.

    You're kidding right?

You failed to delid, damaged some capacitors, did a bad soldering job and that thing still works?

    I'm impressed.

Have to show this to anyone who says "I don't want to damage my CPU"

In my new build the case has a control on the front, with a female molex connection. As does the molex on the power supply. I presume Maplins will have an adapter to fix that.

The molex connector from the power supply should be male, double check.

    Nope they are all female.

Doh! Anyway the fan controller power cable is the same type.

Edit, this says they are female.

    I just learned something today.
I always considered the connection from the PSU to be male as it fits into the device like hard drive or optical drive but after googling for an image of a female molex connection now realize it's down to the 4 prongs within the connection fitting over the prongs on the device.

    Anyway Maplin will have something.

Are you sure the case molex are not pass-through? I.e that you can connect to psu molex to one side of it and if needed daisy chain another molex through it?

    Like this here?

Anybody here a regular WoW player?

A friends brother is looking for help building a PC mostly for WoW where he does a lot of raids with his guild. Hos current system is near 7 year old and wasnt great to begin with and hes pretty fed up with performance at this point. Just asking to see if theres anything i should be looking out for?

Current thinking is kaby/sky lake i3 and a 480 4gb,8gb of ram. Maybe an SSD for the OS. Nothing fancy but will leave him with scope to try newer titles on it too. His budget is €700 and looking at prices not sure id squeeze the i5 in.
He quite impatient so waiting for ryzen may not be an option as he didnt seem keen when i asked him about delaying a bit.

    What res is his screen?

Wow is pretty cpu dependant so a 460 or 470 might be a good fit and try to squeeze in a i5.

I have a i5 4690k with a amd fury and game at 120 fps in 1440p with occasional dips to 50 fps. Settings at 7 in game.
Thats the old ultra. The new ultra is pretty hard to run. Even friends with 1080 cards struggle to hit 144fps in 1440p all the time.
Yell if you have any questions.

    60Hz @ 1080p,nothing fancy.

The 480 was to try leave him the option to play more modern titles at good settings but i am probably thinking that way myself, hes pretty adament he only plays WoW.

Considering his old machine, any modern setup will be a huge jump for him. I was considering a 470 but again my bias is probably showing there as the 480 is the card i would go for rather than the one he probably actually needs!!

Cheers for the heads up,ill be starting a thread anyway, ill put both builds up and see what people think.

Any other suggestions keep them coming folks, thanks.

Take a look at the Pentium G4560, it's same performance as a locked Core i3 in games.

    Thoughts on this setup ?

Pcpartpicker is coming in more expensive for most of the components with an OS etc, spec is abit vague and no mention of power supply etc

WoW can be a CPU hog so I'd probably push for the i5 if you could. Probably easier to upgrade the gfx card later if he wants to than the CPU anyhow.

Good article here comparing i7-2600K with i7-7700K. Bottom line - no real point upgrading.

Whoever wrote the description of Cherry MX brown switches is deaf
They are also ideal for typing in office environments, where a clicky switch might annoy some.

Fúck me they're noisy. I mean I'm sure blues are much more clicky and noisy but browns are by no means quiet... this is definitely going to take some adjusting to.

Grab some of these. They make quite a difference.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

I don't necessarily mind - I'm not actually using it in an office thank god, it's just a rather big change from the silence of a membrane keyboard. Just about the only notable difference really

    So, um... huh.

4Gb system RAM didn't seem to have much of an effect on gaming performance.

I have always known I did not need more than the 6GB I have. It never impacted on any game I played. I have triple channel 2 GB sticks.

Just shows how lazy Intel became with no competition breathing down their necks. 20% increase over how many generations in 5 years?

I guess my good old sandy will live another year, or at least until we find out about new amd solution.

I don't think it's laziness - it's just good business sense. They're obviously innovating a lot behind the scenes but they're only pushing minimal advances (eg 20% in 5 years) to final product because that's all it's taking to stay ahead of the competition.

There's absolutely no need for them to "blow their load" when they can just as easily keep an ace up the sleeve for when AMD does catch up in a significant manner. It means AMD is just in a forever repeating cycle of playing catch up then.

Even though CPU performance has stagnated over the past few years - it doesn't really matter at a consumer level because CPUs aren't bottlenecking games anymore, GPU's are. It's even said on this forum almost daily - if you want a 4K gaming setup you need to wait a few generations of GPU advances...

Amazon customer service is the best I've ever deal with. Had a problem one time with one of my graphics cards that I got at Christmas, got onto them that day and they replied within a half hour...on Christmas Day!

The Aerocool QC-203 PC case didn't come with any screws. I had managed to find spares, except for extra standoff's, Is that normal in cheap cases. Will buy a set of spares for next time.
