I'd also wonder if the current coaching staff will need to run through new coaching training considering the difference the banking causes. They're all experienced with "proper" banking, but I just wonder.

Health and safety, the accreditation will be much stricter. Diving off the banking on a full drome is nowhere near what it's like in Sundrive.

I would have thought that an indoor velodrome would be run by fulltime staff. Some new coaches would need to be trained to keep up with demand.

Indoor accreditation is a bit more in depth, but riding the banking is fairly straightforward.

Different coaching skills are definitely required for the indoor track. At least one of the current coaches does have extensive experience of such tracks (as will be the case with some of the High Performance guys), but I would have thought there would be additional training proivided ahead of a track opening, possibly by sending some of the experienced coaches to an overseas track for a session or two.

Oh, and just to make it clear - Hugh is still a relative youngster ....

Don't know much about velodromes. Would you need to have a specialist bike to ride one? Like the bikes you see them use in the Olympics or is it possible to just use a regular road bike? Also is track cycling typically short sprints/races or would you ever have something like a 50km cycle on a track ?

Track bike required, hire bikes are always available. Points and scratch races are longer, I think up to 30km for men.

In terms of "official" distances, I think only the Madison (which is a 2 man team race with riders "swapping" with their teammate into the race frequently, so they effectively share the load) goes up to 50km, with the points race 40km and scratch 20km

Clearly fitting such longer races into a track session can be difficult, so these distances tend to be reserved for the major championships

Of course, if you have the wherewithal to hire a track to yourself you can always go for an hour record ....

these are half price right now and would make great training/league racing tubs for when it opens

no puncture belt so not recommended for Sundrive, but they should be ok

It has been announced by the government that there is no longer any money available as proposed for a velodrome

    Really?

Will this impact the rest of the development at Abbottstwon, or just this?

I red the article through a mist of red so I don't know, but I don't think so.

I had a dream a few weeks ago this happened, i then won the euro millions and built the velodrome myself but not in Abbotstown in Swords.
I had a similar dream on Sunday night after a few drinks but this time i didnt have enough money to build it so had to invite badminton Ireland in on the deal , Can remember both dreams as clear as day.
Tomorrows Euromillions is €15M, I'm going the shop for a quick pick, i wont be spending my millions on a velodrome tho

There was surplus cash but they loaned it to an at arms length, fully commercial, non state assisted utility!

Knowing our planners, they would probably approve and allow it to be built with the wrong materials, to the wrong size etc etc!

Yea, I know, I have so little faith :D

terrible news, we really do get the dross we vote for. Anyone know how much funding would have been needed? No doubt its a drop in the ocean compared to the €14bn the HSE costs a year, every year

It was never announced that there was any funding available. All they have said is it's not being funded in the current Budget round. It's next on the "list" and may get the required funding at next year's Budget

"The Department of Sport said that almost €25 million was being provided for the development of the National Sports Campus, including completion of the National Indoor Arena"

This is in the Sticky Bottle article referencing Budget 2016. The velodrome was to be part of the National Sports Campus.

Where did you read it was "next" on the list?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 75,722 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

The national indoor arena is not the velodrome. There has never been any funding allocated to the velodrome

The "next on the list" comment was based on discussions with some of those who I consider to be "in the know"

I never said it was. I said it was to be part of the Sports Campus.

If we were to go on comments made by people "in the know", we'd have had it built already.

If you REALLY want to be pedantic about this Beasty, I never said they had promised any money for the velodrome. I said it was "proposed", which I believe it was, i.e. that CI and Badminton Ireland and the state would provide funds for its development.

Why? Sundrive is still there and there are indoor velodromes all over Europe, within cheap flying distance.

You said there was "no longer" any money available. My point is there has never been any money available. SB are trying to make a story out of nothing here. Funding was always expected to be down the line. It not all going to come from the Government either. Both Badminton and Cycling will be expected to find some of the cash
