Smoking while pregnant

I pass the Coombe a few times a day. since they stopped people smoking on the grounds the amount of pregnant women smoking openly out at the bus shelter or what not is sickening.

i just dont understand how they can do it.

has it something to do with their socioeconomic background?

would you have seen the same outside mount carmel?

i feel sick everytime i see it. i can nearly understand a heavy smoker having the odd sneaky one maybe 3/4 times in the whole 9 months where no one ever sees them but these scum dont seem to care that everyone can see them actually harming their unborn child.

    just makes me very angry

It breaks my heart to see it when I know so many healthy women who who have had difficulties getting pregnant.

I thought it was illegal to sell cigarettes to under 16s!

I think it's absolutely disgusting to see (and I say that as a smoker). At the same time, I can understand addiction so I can see how some can't get off of them even during pregnancy. My mam couldn't on me, but nobody cared back then anyway.

Drinking is actually very dangerous also. Causes fetal alcohol syndrome which I think should be stressed also. Not that smoking is great pregnant either.

Strangely enough there was a heavily pregnant lady smoking beside us in the beer garden today. She had 3 before her partner and her headed off. She drank coke, so obviously health concious :/

See the same at holles st plus loads of staff. Should have kept the shelters inside hospital grounds, out of sight

We were shocked every time we headed for an appointment in the rotunda only to be greeted with heavily pregnant women having a quick fag...just very shocking to see especially when there was people like myself busting my ass to be as good as possible. I know it's hard work to quit as I did it in my early 20s but if youre big and bold enough to create a new life you can be big enough to do the hard work to keep both of you healthy.

A bit harsh don't you think? You know nothing about these people so branding them as "scum" is a bit low imo.

No, I don't think the OP is being harsh. These people are showing a blatant disregard for the health of their child, which is pretty scummy behaviour. Why do we need to be PC about it?

Pregnant and care more about their tobacco fix than the health of their child? Yeah they're scum.

And that's the crux of the matter, the ONLY thing you know about these women is that they are pregnant. Nothing about their home.life, how scared they are, their mental.state....all.you see is pregnant + smoking = scum.

Yeah I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it doesn't matter a bit. Smoking won't fix any of that, all it will do is harm their unborn child.
    You're dead right that's all I see.

If they don't want the child then they should have opted for an abortion, but don't choose to have it then fúck it up

What has their home life or them being scared (of what?) got to do with smoking? Not being smart, I genuinely don't understand what you're getting at..

I dunno, I think it's the same "he had a hard upbringing" type excuse when some scummer is caught robbing a car

Some people find smoking to be soothing for the nerves. Yes we know it's a chemical reaction due to addiction of nicotine but some people find it impossible to quit and need that crutch in times of stress.

I always thought when I seen the pregnant women outside in their pjs smoking... They are obviously being kept in hospital because of complications with the pregnancy yet still expose the baby to smoking makes me angry.
A friend of mine smoked throughout her pregnancy and then when baby was born wouldn't allow anyone smoke within a 5 mile radius.., always thought it ironic

Don't think it justifies it though

Well then maybe all.pregnant women need to.stay indoors all day too, not fair on baby if you decide to go out and suck in all those exhaust fumes. Also no buggy for baby after he is born, buggy keeps baby at car exhaust level. Scummy of anyone to force their child to breath these toxic fumes right?

Not saying it justifies it, not saying i agree with it, am.saying i can see why some would and therefore there is no need for some posters in here to brand them as scum.

You know, I never once saw either a pregnant woman or a staff member smoking outside Holles St. Not only did I attend there regularly for nine months, I also work very close to the hospital. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I can't imagine it's a regular thing.

Less than the cost of a taxi to fly to England and back.

If you choose to get pregnant and you choose to smoke you're a bad person. Even when my girlfriend got pregnant I switched to ecig so I wouldn't be harming the baby. She doesnt smoke and if she did she wouldn't be smoking. There's worse things to do than giving up the fags and if you give any sort of a damn about your baby you wouldn't smoke. It's a disgusting sight as is pregnant women drinking alcohol. If you cant care for the baby before he's born you're not likely to do much better afterwards

Yes that's the answer, send em over to England. Also costs at least 60quid return flight to Uk.
And it's hardly there and back on the same day.

It really isn't an option for most women. (though it should be)

Having never been to mount carmel(a snob i am not) i was asking a genuine qs.

blowing off the fact they are smoking by claiming my concern to be nothing more than snobbery is weak imo

    Feeling guilty perhaps?

I don't think smoking during pregnancy is any worse than feeding a child to obesity.

Mothers to be putting their child in danger by smoking would classify as scum to me.

And it's hardly there and back on the same day.

It is actually. Get to the clinic first thing. Out and on your way by early afternoon. The open Saturdays too, you don't even have to miss work.

I smoked while I was pregnant didn't do my child any harm but then I breastfed also doubt I'm "scum" . I could say the same for people who don't breastfeed but then I would probably sound like an obnoxious assh@le

I live beside Holles Street and pass there most days. It would be unusual that there is not a pregnant woman outside smoking in my experience.
There are normally 5-6 people smoking outside at any one time, couple of staff, couple of visitors and the women themselves.
So much so that I was actually thinking about starting a thread on this very subject in the parenting forum.

But if you let your child smoke in the womb then he might as well start smoking as soon as he can light a fag.. Sure it didn't do his developing lungs any damage , did it?
Anyway, the important thing is that you didn't have to make any sacrifices for your baby. That's the main thing.

That fact that they are smoking while pregnant propably qualifies as scum on its own merits.

Just because you breastfed it doesn't take away from the fact that your put baby's health at risk prior to that.

And unless people are substituting formula with harmful chemicals its not exactly comparable.
