The man is a demi-god and I am one of his minions. You and your ilk shall be smited.

Best commentator in the world imo

"Them Greeks have been chasing bouncing Czechs all night" - Brian Kerr, Euro 2012.

Best line I've ever heard from a commentator.

he sounds like an oul drunk in the chipper on the walkinstown roundabout on a saturday night

The only time I looked at any of ITV's World Cup coverage was when Kerr was on RTÉ. That's how bad he is!

Actually, I think it's the combination of his voice and his accent that kills me. I don't even get to hear what he says...

To be fair, this could be said about every single member of RTE's WC coverage.

He's bad but he's no Trevor Welsh.

    *shudder*

He knows his stuff for sure, but his voice is a bit of an acquired taste.

Nowhere near as bad as Lawro or Townsend. They actually make the games unwatchable they irritate me so much.

Mark Lawrenson always seems to be in a foul or snarky mood.

Can't decide who's worse, himself or Lou Macari. Awful voices.

Same here,I have to switch channels if he's on cos the wife can't stand his voice, bad enough having soccer on all the time she sez but having to listen to him is chronic,I turn over to ITV just to keep her happy.

He's a joke, can't tolerate him at all and I refused to watch a WC game on BBC when he was commentating.

Townsend is equally as bad but in a different way.

Best co commentator at the tourney (or commenting on it anyway!) by a mile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭Nailz

It's his accent that is the unbearable aspect of his commentary, it's just so fecking thick, but to be fair to him he generally knows what he's talking about and I respect his opinion so it doesn't bother me that much really.

Paddy Crerand. Worst ever. Too pro-Man united for even the Man United TV channel.

Kerr's my favorite RTE commentator. He obviously knows his stuff, has a nice dry sense of humor and doesn't have the bland middle class Dublin or slightly bogger-ish accent that is usually a prerequisite for employment in by our glorious state broadcaster.

I'm quite sure I've no idea as to what you mean by bogger, or indeed middle-class.

    It's D4 or nothing, darrhling.

Love Brian Kerr! During the Brazil v Netherlands match when a player called Maxwell committed a bad foul he said "at least he didn't use a silver hammer!":D

I have no problem with it. You tend to hear quite a lot of regional accents in GAA coverage and there's no mass gnashing of teeth over it. Perhaps people are just so accustomed to hearing BBCD4 English with their football commentary that hearing an inner city Dublin accent just throws them slightly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

I think he's great as a 2nd choice co-commentator. But if he got the high profile job sitting beside George Hamilton for every big game..... no that would a bit too much.:D

Well for me it's not actually the accent.

    It's the shuda, wuda, cudda.

A commentator's job is to clarify and enlighten. Not a platform for 'what i wudda dun'.

(yes, I'm also mocking his accent, I know. sigh. sorry?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭AllGunsBlazing

I thought his rambling style made some of the less action packed games that bit more watchable. And be under no illusion the man knows the game well, and is more than qualified in venturing his opinion.

Ah I think it makes him come across quite similarly to the average punter watching the match. Perhaps that's part of the charm. The dry humour doesn't hurt either

I loved him! Really added to the games especially the ****e one!

Some of the one liners were brilliant!

He should have coaching to remove any trace of a disgusting regional accent. Sickening.

He's class. Best commentator at RTE, knows his stuff and genuinely enjoys watching football unlike Ray Houghton, one of the worst commentators to have to listen to.

Shoudl have clarified on commentary, I know nothing of him as a man :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,733 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I like his sense of humour, and even though don't really like the accent much, it suits the jokes he makes.

More importantly though, he is a very good and knowledgeable analyst who is far more familiar with the teams and players he's watching than the old stalwarts of Giles or Dunphy.

    Bahaha, that's actually brilliant :P

That said I still opted for the I want to hurt someone option.

Kerr is terrible. His grating accent might be bearable if he would STFU for five seconds. He doesn't relent; even as the action heats up on screen he won't pause to comment on it, if he's started an anecdote about his footballing days well, come hell or high water, he's going to finish it.

He fumbles over players names (yes, it is his job as commentator to know how to pronounce them) and doesn't seem to know whether Stephen Alkin is agreeing with him or not half the time. It's like he's baffled by the whole thing.

I'm quite sure he has a decent footballing mind but his footballing mouth needs a bit of work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭floggg

There are times he seems quite knowledgeable, other times he talks the most absurd nonsense.

It took my a good 30 minutes of the 3rd place playoff match before I was absolutely certain it was him commentating and not the après match crowd doing a parody.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,717 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Lot of snobbery about in here. Kerr is the REAL football people that Dunphy's alter ego speaks about! In all seriousness he knows a lot more about tactical organisation than some of the washed up sh1tehawks on UK telly analysis.

    I quite enjoyed him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 826 ✭✭✭geeksauce

Reminds me of Sid Waddell, most normal people find him unbearable to listen too, however the chances of him being sacked are ruined by a few of the less normal people thinking he is wonderful and hilarious.

I may be able to tolerate Brian if he changed his accent whilst commentating but alas I believe I may never find out if he is tolerable as the accent doesn't seem to bother him. (just 99% of the rest of the worlds population)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 seaniemammy

Can't stick him. Think there's a touch of inverted snobbery hede when you can't criticise a "regional" accent. His voice is horrible and grating and imo not suited to broadcasting. He should make a decent effort to know the players' names. It's so irritating when he gets nearly all of them wrong

He is certainly better than Ray Houghton or Trevor Stevens.
