Sexist advert

This has got to be the most patronizing, sexist advert I've ever seen. There is so much wrong with it, I don't even know where to begin, cheap stereotypes, tired clichés and Katie Taylor with a worryingly glazed expression on her face.

If I was a female, I would find this highly insulting as both my mother and sister did.

People of AH what do you think?

Katie Taylor looks and sounds like she's stoned or brain damaged or something.

How did your mam and sister see this, have you a telly in the kitchen?

After driving for 12 years in multiple countries and multiple vehicles from my own experience I can say that the worst drivers out there are Asians, old men and middle aged women.

    She didn't even say Mass.

Imagine trying to get insurance as an old, middle aged, Asian man-woman.

Seriously sexist ad, yes. Irish ads in particular can be the absolute pits sometimes. This is a prime example.

I think the way they bulldozed Katie, Rio and the gold medal into the narrative was really brazilliant.

I deleted it because I knew you'd take it like that :D I meant about the "sexism". I don't particularly give a shít about it. Its not something I'd notice or be bothered by when seeing those types of adds.

That can't be a real ad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,930 ✭✭✭Jimoslimos

"Cheerio to cliché...so long to stereotype"

followed by how women can drive in "challenging footwear" and "aren't afraid to ask for directions". The mind boggles

As for KT, was that really the best take? I mean I know sportspeople aren't always naturals in front of the camera. Should have limited her lines in that case. Ad is a car crash (no pun intended) because of her input.

I think the real issue here is that the ad was approved. Companies often make ads that never make it to air, look on Youtube you can find thousands of them but who in the name of God would approve that to be shown on a national broadcaster?

For the wrong reasons. If you feel insulted by that ad you're not going to be contacting them for a quote are you? It's nearly as bad as the no nonsense ads.

sexism in the media is ok as long as its aimed at men

Don't know really. Someone in the company probably took on the job rather than hire a director thinking women talking shíte to the tune of a ukulele can't be that hard to make. But tbh this ad doesn't seem too far below par for shít ads. Plenty do make it to air.

Shoes and handbags should be banned from ads that aren't specifically about shoes and handbags! I don't know what the brainstorming sessions must be like "we're making an ad for women, it's about car insurance/tea/air freshener...fúckit, take the piss out of men, mention shoes, they're pure mad for shoes. Ok that's lunch"

But who makes these ads? Is advertising an exclusively female business?

Advertising and architecture are two lines of work that baffle me, seeing some of the output. Do people get taught to make truly sh*tty ads and design buildings that look like gik?

God be with the days of Mike Brady and his one design fits all method (joke for old people).

Yeh I'd say if there's one thing Greer truly fought for, it was inane ads that include a bit about how women manage to drive in pretty challenging footwear, and how we reserve the right to give our car a name apparently.

Why wouldn't the ad be sexist? What they're selling is sexist. I mean...look at the name of the company.

Well, they're not getting any of my Yorkie!

Hang on are they not advertising an illegal service ? EU directive states you cannot discriminate via gender and women only insurance was deemed illegal, giving them a discount. If it was itsformen.ie there would be war, They did some research and found out why women are better drivers. It’s due to driving less than a 3rd time/distance than males. So it’s statistics not women actually being better drivers.

They're not giving any gender discount.

I have no idea what your final sentence means.

Expected "Flash gets rid of dirt and grime and grease in just a minute..."

Regardless, people should realize that for a lot of MRAs it's not so much the sexism of the ads itself that's offensive, but the double standard in which one must tread on eggshells when talking about women to avoid getting sued / BAI'd, but men can be dragged through the mud on TV and not one single f*ck is given.

The standards should be 100% identical for both genders, otherwise the system is inherently sexist.

Statistic makes out that women are better drivers, due to not driving as much or as far as their male counterpart. When actually there is no difference.

    Hate hate HATE that ad!

"Preddy challenging footwear" my ar$e! Far too dangerous to be driving in heels, it's a very difficult thing to do.

Katie Taylor looks scarily demented too.

    Bleh, stupid ad.

I think she's just making a very conscience effort to improve her diction and speak with a more neutral accent and it's not coming naturally to her yet. I say fair play to her, it'll probably make her more marketable for media stuff and she'll get some money out of it which in fairness she deserves. She's represented us well for
long enough. I'm inclined to say leave her alone lads .

    This is a first.
It patronizes women and yet penalizes men.
This ad is equally sexist towards men and women. ....Wait but that means its not.

SEXISM.... evil tricky ****er so he is.

MR SEXISM at it again. He is really out for all of us!

What a ridiculous ad. I think it's just really stupid more so than sexist. The whole advertising industry is pretty much geared towards stereotyping men and women anyway. That doesn't make it okay or right but it's unfortunately a fact of life thanks to the absolute gicks who work in that industry.
