When do you lose your no claims bonus?

    Hi,

There's a possibility I won't have insurance, more accurately won't have my own comprehensive insurance policy, for a few months, hopefully six max.

Am I at risk of losing my no claims bonus if I don't have my own policy? I haven't made a claim in over fifteen years of driving so would like not to have to start from scratch.

    Thanks.

Went through a period where i did not drive for over 20 months. Got back on my feet, and went for my own insurance again.

When i rang i was asked if i had any no claims bonus (NCB). I told them i had full NCB, no accidents ever, etc, etc. but had not driven in close to 2 years. It was not an issue. Got my quote and was back driving with full NCB.

I went back to the same company i was with before so maybe that has something to do with it.

Would it be worth your while to contact the insurance company, inform them you wish to cancel or suspend the policy for a period of up to 6 months and ask them would it affect your NCB? Different companies may have different policies on such things.

With most insurance companies if you have no insurance for 2 years you reset back to 0 with your NCB.

Depends on the policy of the insurance company really.

i lost mine aftr 2 years as i didn't realise only being a named driver would affect it. Although i had to start again with 0 NCB the quote they gave me took into account the fact that i had over 10 years no claims. It wasnt any higher than when i had my full NCB although i also stayed with the same company.

Thanks for the information everyone, delighted to know I won't lose my NCB by taking a break.

I'd second that two year post.... to the best of my knowledge it's two years but I'm open to correction.

It depends on the insurer but generally most will allow up to a two year gap

I can confirm it is two years fir most insurers. Before the 2 years are up, you need to have a full years policy renewed in your name, or the ncb is lost. In most cases, company policies do not count either.
