Voice messages between Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners (and presumably Windows 10 when it arrives).

Also: No more NAT issues for Party Chat. Hooray! :)

Tried out the voice message. It's very clear, Skype clear :D

    It's a serious update.

I look foward to seeing how chat works with dedicated servers. My guess is it will work fantastic. More than likely hosted by Azure servers in Dublin.

But still no "Voice chat through speakers" option. Ridiculous. Its like in the top 5-10 on the feedback site and yet still hasn't been acknowledged

I'd say pretty much everything is being acknowledged and will be implemented as soon as possible but it takes times.

woohoo! the voice messages were some of the most entertaining things on xbox live. I was never a fan of sending them, but some of the ones I've gotten over the years were brilliant.

I still cant see why this wasn't implemented from the beginning. I cant use my own headphones and mic because of it which is seriously annoying.

    Priorities

It's a simple feature that was on 360 from the beginning , why remove it in the first place?

The 360 has a different operating system. Its not a case of simply moving something across from the 360 to the the XB1.

The Xbox One runs 3 operating systems at the same time. So nothing was ever removed, it had to be created from the ground up.

They simply were not ready for launch back in late 2013. Microsoft had to launch the XB1 before Christmas. The Xbox didn't even have a battery indicator when released :p

It wasn't removed, it just wasn't added. So far the monthly updates have been excellent at adding features people are asking for, this just doesn't hit as many people as other functionality.

So things like tile transparency and wallpaper backgrounds are a higher priority than something that improves the functionality of the system?

I believe they were higher on the most requested list yes.

But the trending section on the dashboard , this had 19 votes on xbox.uservoice.com and was added yet options with thousands of votes don't get added.

It's not just a case of what's most requested either, but often what meshes with the direction that Microsoft wants the Xbox One to go. They still have a dream that it's going to be the All-In-One media centre for everyone, and trending will play into that.

It's also a case of low hanging fruit. A trending section is easy to develop, others aren't.

So rather than adding in features to improve functionality and have thousands of votes they are choosing to add in the easier options for themselves e.g adding your name to your gamertag. Seems like a bit of a cop out from MS.

I think the feedback system is a great idea but it does not seem to be being implemented very well IMO.

Yes, things that impact 100% of users are higher priority than things that do not impact all users. Also as catinabox said there are other factors such as ease of implementation and goals. Do not forget also that there are different teams with different budgets and strategies involved.

edit: as a point of interest voice through speakers has 2808 votes since june 14 but tile transparency had 2747 since October 14.

Well the amount of votes clearly doesn't effect the selection process at "trending section" had 19 votes. There are plenty of other options which have 10k+ votes not being implemented either.

Using the logic of selection by ease of implementation , MS must go through the suggestions , pick which ones are easiest to implement and then add them into monthly updates which kind of negates the voting system no?

Just because a request has 10k votes doesn't mean its a good idea, or that its feasible. One of the most popular suggestions is to make the OS faster, hardly a trivial undertaking (though fingers crossed for threshold).

I didn't say ease of implementation was the number one deciding factor though, its just one thing for the teams to consider. Also, as I said previously, its not just a single team that implements all features. Each area has its own team with different resources, budget and goals.

At the end of the day you can;t please everyone and implement everything instantly, some things just take time.

Indeed, some features are clearly in development for months before we hear about then, while others could conceivably be in development for lies than a month.

I'd assume that the core OS team would now be focused on getting Xbox One ready for its windows 10 update, which is months away, and various smaller teams are developing what they can from the list of priorities that they have.

Sometimes, their priorities will mesh with what the power user wants, other times it won't. Coming from an IT background, I've been very happy with both the preview program and the updates that have come out so far. Their transparency about the whole thing is pretty commendable, to be honest.

Thats a good point actually - given that the new upcoming OS means pretty much anything that's developed for the current OS will be redundant in a few months its great to see these updates at all.

A lot of these updates are bringing features that were touted at the console launch but never made it into the OS for the actual launch. In fairness though, launching a new system with lesser or poorer functionality than the xbox 360 when it came to parties / messages / achievements was pretty poor.
Sony are in a similar position with their next update only adding the instant resume function.

Its nice that we get an update a month, at least you know they're working away on stuff in the background and its a gradual, rather than a raft of major ones all at once.

Wouldn't say that the Xbox will lose any functionality in Windows 10, in fact, I'd hazard a guess that the upgrade will be in name only really.

For anyone that likes videos of developer conferences, here's a video of the new Windows Apps being shown off. Looks incredibly easy to code once and hit three devices.

A Windows App is shown running on an Xbox One around the 35 min mark.
