Hi guys , I have a Mitsubishi colt 01 , and I got it serviced because it was using so much petrol but the man that done it says he doesn't know why my car uses so much petrol , I put at least a hundred euro every week , and I don't even do that much driving , I can see the metor going down after 3 or 4 minutes ! Please I'd like to know what I can do to !

How many miles do you do a week so we can get idea of MPG.
However if gauge moves after 3 or 4 mins then you have a fuel leak I imagine.

If you aren't getting any fault lights showing then I'd change the O2 sensor first. They're the usual cause of poor mpg when there are no apparent faults. An O2 sensor will just you €50 and a few quid to get fitted and will at least rule it out if things don't improve.

I'm assuming your mechanic checked for seized brake pads/calipers and that your tyres are properly inflated all round?

But I got him to look at it and he said its not leaking , how do I check ? And I couldn't tell u exactly how much but I reckon its around 20 to 30 kilometres , [ roughly ]

This has to be a wind up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 kierancolt

Sorry think I wrote that wrong like 20 euro does 20 kilometres roughly ! And its not a wind up I put 20 in my car every day ! The epoxy thing eats the fuel !

If that is in reply to my suggestion to change the O2 sensor then go to a different mechanic. The O2 sensor doesn't leak, it's a sensor that detects emission which in turn determines how much fuel your engine is getting. To rule it out change it anyway, it can't do anything but improve things even if it's not fully at fault.

Okay I'll buy one of them on Friday , and sorry he said checked the tank and not the 02 sensor

No offense but 20euro for 20km is roughly 4mpg in a colt. A faulty o2 sensor or poorly inflated tyres won't do that. Its obviously leaking.

How do I check if it leaking myself cause it never leaks out like there's never petrol under my car !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

He'd smell it surely if it was leaking that much.

    You would think!
Op do you reguarly service your car or did you only do so as it was using so much fuel?

O went out and started the car , couldn't smell any petrol , I jacked the car up and there is no leak in the tank !

What sort of driving are you doing? Through suburban areas or on a main road?

Mostly suburban areas , no motor ways because I'm a learner driver

Haha he's a mechanic , but he taught that if he serviced the problem would go away but guess what ? It ****ing didn't , so I went back and he said he didn't know what else he could do !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,592 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

If you're spending a hundred euro a week on fuel you'd probably be better off finding a good mechanic as it would save you money in the long run. The mpg sounds crazy and it couldn't be too hard for someone competent to diagnose it.

Do you let down the big lever with the button, beside the seat, when you are driving?

It's a good question. It will determine if the brakes are sticking, which would explain the bad mpg.

    Go see another mechanic.

I'd stick a fuel cleaner in e.g. redex/dipetane and I'd get an emissions test done, I'd say your cat is blocked/fcuked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭greasepalm

my thought exactly emission readings will show on tick over and rev test.
use catacleen better cleaner and will work in a day, dipetane only cleans on long term
been using catacleen for the past 4 months and its great for cleaning lambda and cat.
plenty of just over the limit nct failures and works.

Sticking brakes won't cause your MPG to drop to 4 from provably 40 ish expected.

Your spending 100 quid a week when a Tenner should cover you for what you drive. No brainer you should pay to get looked at by a decent mechanic.

I went to a different garage today and they said it could be my throttle body ?
So gonna get a replacement for a few days to see if that's the problem , its a second hand one but gonna see if that's the problem

my thoughts on throttle body is cutting out or over revving.take a spark plug out and if black mixture is out and possible cause lambda probe faulty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭Technoprisoner

to be honest....if your mechanic was any good he would be able to figure out what is wrong with the car.....you are not going to diagnose the problem over the internet. Your car could have a number of problems...air mass meter...lambda probe...air leak....and lots of other things. find yourself a decent mechanic, pay the couple of hundred quid to fix and save money on petrol. also this is doing your engine and catalytic converter no good. at the moment the petrol is possibly seeping pass the rings and mixing with your oil thinning it out, this could cost you a new engine... its also probably getting chucked out the exhaust and ruining your catalytic converter so it is in your best interest to bring it to a good mechanic asap and get it sorted
