Dress attires at football games

I think dressing up at games is a bit of fun and it adds to the whole atmosphere and feel good mood when in a stadium.

I love the Italians dressing as Roman warrior, the Brits have their Knight costumes, the Mexicans have the sombrero, the USA have Captain America costumes and I can think of many others.

We Irish only have the green paddy hats and ginger beards. Is it just me or is this crap? How come we don’t have something as cool as Greek warriors or sexy French cocks Brazilian carnival dancers?

Now I get the Greeks worrying, what with being broke and that, but what have the Italians to worry about?

We should probably try qualifying for these tournaments first, then we can worry about our wardrobe.

Well the leprechaun is the best option out of a bad bunch really.. Dressing up as a priest, spud, rain cloud or a begrudger isn't as appealing.

This seems to be a thing at the rugby internationals? Always brings out a cringe.

Dress up as members of a Flying Column. Now that's style.

Balaclavas and Khaki outfits and mock Armalite guns......that's how we should dress up at games.....

    :p

You could go for one of the League of Ireland outfits.

The Scrote Look: White runners, tracksuit, baseball cap. Haircut is very tight. Accessories include argos jewellery and John Player cigarettes.

Middle-Aged Hooligan: Adidas Gazelle runners, bootcut jeans, wool coat, team scarf. Bonus points for having jowls.

Only have? Have you any idea of Irish history & folklore? You could go as a Celtic warrior. You know? One of the guys that battered the Vikings at Clontarf. There are lots of options really if you just give it some thought.

Not really a look that's exclusive to the Irish at all. If anything, it's probably a more widespread look in the UK.

I lived right beside a LoI ground for a number of years. I know exactly the type of 'characters' who make up a large proportion of the supporters of the Dublin and Louth clubs. Not that there is that many supporters in the first place, but the hack of some of the chancers going through the ticket stalls is enough to stop the more casual supporter from attending.

You'll have to add a bit more information to your post. I'm not suggesting that all LoI supporters fall exclusively into the Scrote or Middle-Aged Wannabe Hooligan demographic. They do exist though.

Sad truth is so called Irish sports fans are prepared to invent untold numbers of excuses not to go and watch Irish football games. Wool coats and scarves scaring people away? I've heard it all now.

I've been to a good few games. The reason I don't keep going is because the football is poisonous and the atmosphere rubbish. I've better things to be doing of a Friday evening that sitting in a cold shed with a load of other men watching a load of other men run around a field. Before retiring to the local pub to talk about the purity of the local game and giving out about plastic supporters of PL teams.

It's a minority interest in fairness.

Think that's Northern Ireland you're thinking of ...

    And the GAA.

There are few things as smug as the belief some of the LoI supporters have about themselves and the true football 'integrity' they show by supporting their local club.

It's like they've created a romantic vision of themselves standing on the terrace, keeping it real from the forces of Sky Sports and the GAA. All pie, pint and lambswool coat. Like a one dimensional working class character from a 1970's Ken Loach movie.

Bit of a throwback to when people could drive home after a feed of pints to a meal slathered in gravy and a timid, terrified wife. I reckon such creatures will be extinct in about 20 years.

Not saying I agree with Walrus exactly, but yours is the worst type of "discussion" on boards.

The smiles on their faces. How many of them will be in a galvanised hut next Friday night cheering on their local LoI team? None, becuase they're not real fans of football.

That was taken at the Andorra match, not exactly a bandwagoner's away trip. To answer your question, at least 3.

His silly post doesn't deserve me going into great detail on why it's a silly post plus it's after hours.

I think the best costumes for a match I was at was Bohs v Waterford in Waterford for the EA Sports Cup in 2009. Loads of the Bohs fans dressed up, there was a ridiculous amount of costumes. Including one brave man who wore a mankini.
