Will have a look at the baby naming thread many thanks. Am looking for an edgy different name. This is baby no 5 so our lists are either exhausted have gone off names for one reason or another or friends and family have used our options since.

I always wanted a Linnet. But only had 1 girl...so Daisy, (Nóinín) Treasa, Bonnie, and Clare - never happened!!

There are also Quality names, like Felicity, Verity...Joy...Grace...

Bible names tend to be well-worn, even over-used: far too many Sarahs around, for instance...

Old-fashioned English names are still slightly unusual: Avice, Edith, Philippa, Winifred.

With Irish ones you don't want to get into very eccentric spellings or pronunciations - (because they are a curse to a kid) but traditional ones are a little dated - Una, Nora, Síle, Bríd, Eilís, Máire. For this reason they are less common now and may have some vintage charm LOL

And I believe the Victorian names are very popular still: May, Rosie...Pearl and Ruby...how about a Trixie or a Queenie?

Just a few ideas...I used to love the Name Game, a serious parental privilege!

With two months to go the pressure is on! Like Darcy it's been on my lists a long time now. Loved Sadie but a family member without knowing gave it a dressing down. Hubby liked Zoë last time but my sister had it for her girl last month it was a boy. Came across Opal but a I can think of is the sweet. Esme Martha Nora and Tess written down but am I making her old before her time?! Love Rowan it's a unisex name but def more male in this part of world so afraid to risk it. Think am thinking too much at this stage!!!

My two favourite names for girls are Olivia and Ailbhe (pronounced Alva), I also quite like Alice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 lma

Yes agree Rowan is def my boys name. Alice is lovely just the living next door to song would make me hesitate. Olivia Ailbhe Bella great names but sadly all used by friends. Finding the name game hard this time round as know it's my last little person.

people quite often pick out names and then find that they don't suit the baby when they are born and go with something different.

you'll probably find that seeing the baby for the first time will inspire you towards a particular name. :)

that said we had very definite ideas about names, Christopher for a boy (first born son on my fathers side of the family has always been christopher) and Lily for a girl.

The only thing is that we have both now and we have no idea what to call the next one if we do have one (which is entirely possible), so we might well end up waiting till they are born and playing it by ear. :)

I always say I have to meet my baby first before I can name them. My Dad thinks it's really funny and thinks it's my hormones ! My niece is Robyn she was to be an Emily but the baby born next to her a few mins earlier was Emily so they changed their minds. She is def a Robyn and not an Emily so does this suggest babies grow into their names?! Brooke I like but has been on my lists for all my pregnancies now so has lost it's sparkle.

Just heard the name Beth in a tv programme and had to post it here! It's so beautiful but simple and timeless and yet not something you would come across everyday. A winner in my eyes!

A friend of mine called her daughter Thomasina , shortened to Tommy after her father who passed away while she was expecting.

I like the name Arya (as in Arya Stark), the wife isn't a fan

One of the things that bore heavily on us when we were thinking about names - all those years ago - was that babies don't remain babies for ever, and as adults we have a responsibility to give them names that will make sense when they're born and still make sense long after we're gone.

I read an article once (and I'm sure I've posted it somewhere here before) that said that before you commit to giving your child your chosen name you should put it into three sentences and say them out loud to yourself and to a few other people - and if any of the sentences sounds even the slightest bit doubtful then you've got the wrong name and you need to go back to the drawing board.

The three sentences? If I might choose a name at, er, random from this thread:

"Is Skye coming out to play?"

    "I love you, Skye."

"I wonder if Skye is ready for this promotion."

I never had a daughter, but if I had I would have been even more careful in my choice than when naming a boy. Why? Because we live in a sexist world, and women already face steep enough hills to climb in the professional world without being burdened with a name no-one can take seriously. A name that is cute on a three-year old or an actress in a soap might not prove to be the right choice if you'd like to think your daughter should have the potential to land a high-powered and/or lucrative career for herself.

For good or ill, that's my two cents' worth.

I'm not suggesting these, but a couple of years ago someone I know decided to reach back two generations to their grandmothers and named their daughter Maureen Margaret. I found that odd because as it happens those are the names of my grandmothers.

Their explanation was that the names wouldn't suit a baby but would suit her when she grows up.

I also have female relatives, friends and workmates called: Mairéad, Marcella, Marissa, Miriam, Melissa, Molly, Michelle, Marie, Marianne and Monica.

Drunk, hungover and feeling down; with little sleep and an increasing sense of doom, I sat down beside a young lady one day. We talked for a brief moment and when I got up to leave, I asked her her name. "Hope" she replied. I'd never met anybody called Hope before. I left with the word hope in my head and feeling less bleak because of it. Everything was going to be alright.

Nala is a nice, different girl's name. Can also be spelled Nahla. :)

We wanted something a little different and strongly considered Freya. My wife just felt that she wasn't a Freya when she arrived.

    Still like the name though.

Should have said I think it's a Norse word that meant something like lady or goddess, so the meaning was appealing too.
