A repeat of last year and he will be pushed out I think ... The fan backlash would be enough to ensure that but I am almost certain that things will work this summer.

We've already signed two players so how could it be a repeat?

Are we really calling James Rodriguez a punt and more likely to fail than succeed??

Someone quote that J Law gif for me there please...........
At that price they must be fairly confident of success although RM seem to be a bit like the American treasury and print their own mula at any rate they want.... Better them then us taking JR for that stupid money.

having lost Rio, Vidic, Evra and Giggs, while already needing additions; signing no one further this window would be an equal disaster for United, imo.

Don't forget the interview stating we are pushing forward on deals, that we have the financial power to compete with anyone, that we are still a draw for all the stars of world football.

Woodward has set up a summer that promises more transfers, and arguably BIG ones; if he doesn't deliver it will be as big a sh1tstorm as last summer.

Do ya honestly think a man who just came 3rd in the WC and who has won the CL will start a season with a single LB? Wow.

At what point has it appeared the Glazers care what the fans think?

Woodward has delivered for the with Chevrolet and adidas - his job is utterly safe.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Surely Richard Arnold also deserves a large share of the credit for the Adidas and Chevrolet deals?

This place will explode when Ed delivers. ;)

    What do you know Kew

The Chevy deal, and the beginning of shirt sponsorship negotiations would have been under Woodwards commerical watch, and the commercial team and structure was built under his stewardship, so I would say he still takes a massive heap of the credit for the commerical work at United.

Far far from stupid money for him imo.

I think he's the most exciting young player in the world and was a dream signing this time last year as well. He's a sure thing to succeed and when the time finally comes will replace Ronaldo's goals before Bale ;). If he ever has another transfer it will be minimum twice what RM have paid today.

Those deals were made (piggybacked) on our reputation as being one of if not the most successful clubs/brands in the world... Another few years of below 4th finishes/no trophies and the money making machine would slowly start to fall apart. If Woodward cannot deliver on the pitch he will ultimately be given his P45 - of that i am certain.

I agree he deserves massive credit, but the point I'm making is that it isn't a one man operation and he's now been tasked with a different role in which part of his remit is to secure signings. I've little doubt the Glazers would be willing to either sack or give him a new role in the event they think he's not up to the job.

vermaelan seems to be almost a done deal, arsenal are delaying it until they have signed suitable cover, Vidal seems like the big deal on the cards and I would expect one other signing

Real Madrid, why worry who they buy, I mean they spend big, yet United have been in more CL finals in the last ten years than they have been.
They can only fit 11 players on the pitch, some players won't be happy. Rodriguez did alright at Monaco, nothing overly exceptional, it is the world cup that has him at Madrid.

Isco must be pretty annoyed today...

Hopefully under Van Gaal we have a team that plays nice football and is functional for the whatever team we meet. A team needs players that will do a job, sometimes not always the big name is the best for the position.

true - but fans kicking off over no more signings this summer won't see him sacked.

I don't think Vermaelen is close - I would say we have personal terms agreed, but nowhere close to a fee with arsenal being sorted.

Vidal - I do think we are in for him, but again I don't think it is close. Much like Vermaelen, I would say personal terms ave been agreed with the player but that is a long way from getting Juve to sell him to us.

I would be very happy to finish the summer with 3 signings of Vermaelen, Vidal and Blind. Vermaelen is far from my first choice, but Mangala, Benatia and Hummels are no goes as far as I am concerned, so beyond them I have no idea who we should be going for at CB.

I have to laugh at the idea of Ed Woodward getting the sack for not signing superstar players. The man is practically a Glazer himself and was their adviser when they were taking over the club nearly 10 years ago. Since then he's been instrumental in building the club's commercial revenue to one of the biggest in the world of football.

Unless he sleeps with Linda Glazer and each of the Glazer's wives and daughters before taking a literal sh*t on their faces, his job is about as safe as they come.

Maybe he has done all this, and the Glazer lads are into that type of thing. ;)

I'd have full confidence that LVG will get what he wants/needs....whether that is exactly what the fans want I would highly doubt, fans want star names for big fees....'world class' signings....whatever your definition of world class may be.

So there may well be a 'sh!tstorm'!!!!

I'd suspect LVGs wants will be more about building a team and not neccessarily a team of names....I reckon we'll get one more big name, either a centre back or a centre midfielder and a few modest enough signings.

I'd be perfectly happy with that.

Can't see it NOT happening tbh. As he said, he looks at social media and knows the backlash that happend last year. No way he's going to say those things unless he was pretty much guaranteed he could make good on them.

I'm predicting we'll get at least one big big signing and another 1-2 good players before August deadline. LVG will assess the squad until January when we'll probably strengthen again as well as culling those who have not proved themselves.

Then we will sign a marquee player to launch the Adidas deal.

    Good times ahead lads. :D

Who said anything about signing superstars? If Woodward continually fails to acquire club targets (and I'm not saying he has) and the club fails to make the Champion's League again, do you really think the Glazer's will risk their investment because of sentimentality over his past performance in a different role?

Topics like these are obviously subjective so you're obviously entitled to your opinion of him but I don't see any risk associated with paying that money for him.

He was regarded as one of Europe's top talents when at Porto, got a big money move and ended up being regarded as one of Ligue 1's best players. Made a transition effortlessly to a more central role in doing so and had a stupidly good world cup proving he can shine when everyone's watching and the pressure is on.

Now he'll be surrounded by even better players and ,4/5 games a year aside, will spend the majority of this coming season playing as part of a team who will spend most of every game in the other team's half enjoying all the possession and creating a huge amount of chances.

It's not past performance, unless you either consider the Adddas deal historical, or think he had no involvement in it.

He'll never be held accountable for what happens on the pitch, and if it turns out he can't handle player acquisitions adequately then there'd be a case for hiring a Director of Football or similar, but I don't see how that would have any bearing on Ed's employment status.

Big fan of the Portugese and French leagues Adam?

Obviously he's involved with the Adidas and Chevy deals as he oversees the entire operation of the club, that's part of his job remit. Another part of his remit is bringing in players and if the owners feel he's failing that aspect of his job then I've little doubt that that responsibility will be taken away from him, either by hiring a sporting director/director of football or re-tasking his duties. Personally I doubt he'll be sacked or have duties taken away because, imo, if Utd aren't signing players for large sums of money it's because the owners aren't signing off on those deals or the players simply aren't interested, not incompetence on Woodward's part.
