BT in .308 & .243, and soft point in 6.5 (all that fires well, and can be gotten).

Was very impressed with Federal sierra game kings which are hollow point. very accurate and consistent. Full copper GMX and SST by Hornady are quite good but didnt find accuracy consistent. I personally think the most accurate/consistent polymer tipped factory ammunition out there is Nosler. Even any Federal ammunition with Nosler tips are outstanding. This season I will be testing out Berger VLD ammunition which are Hollow points. I don't use soft points myself. Nothing wrong with their killing ability's but found imposable to achieve clover leafs with, never experimented too much with them to give them a chance. If I can't get 1/4 inch groups @100 I don't bother with the round.

Used 95gr Hornady SST in 243 season before the last with great results, then switched to 150 gr BTSP in 308 last season and all deer ran more or less even with perfect placed shot, going back to SSTs next season.

    BlackWater,
If I am close up, 100m or less, I really have no preference on a deer sized target.

At greater/medium distances, when consistency, accuracy, and precision are more important, I always use a ballistic tip. Even more so when feeding from a magazine.

I'm finding the ballistic tip more accurate as well I'm using federal vital shock and there not causing any damage

That's what i use in the my 6.5 too. Used them in the 6.5 years ago and they were the most consistent and best performing round. Seems nothing has changed. I tried the Lapua Naturalis and was very unimpressed with them. Inconsistent grouping, poor in wind, and above all the price. Some RFDs were charging €55 per box for them.

Unless, you are in an area that allows reloading, you will find it hard to beat the Vital Shok line-up of bullets.

Do you know which bullet is used in you round? When I reload for hunting [not in Ireland] my bullet choice is Sierra Game King, Nosler Partition, or Barne's, in that order. These bullets are exactly what the Vital Shok line uses.

I only use Hornady SST 130 gr in .270 never had a runner and shot deer at 30 yards and out to 450 yards. Find them highly accurate out of my rifle, heart lung and neck shots depending on distance.

In saying that here is a to a link Feildsports Britain trip to the Norma factory in Sweden and which round they recommend fro different styles of deer shooting

The only Elg I ever shot in my life was dropped dead right there in a single breath with a 6.5x55 Norma 140gr partition.

The owner used to shoot between sixty and eighty such beasts every year in his job of game conservancy - he used his dad's m/38 carbine - open sights, and looked as though it had been in a war. Of course, it had. His dad had been a member of Ling.

Slightly limited in choice, but for hunting use the RWS H-Mantel, (copper dome over the point), or Swift A-Frame loaded by Norma, both very accurate and absolutely lethal.
