The main game has been made slightly more difficult too, or at least slightly less generous. Basic resources are quite a bit rarer - certainly in my experience, but have seen it echoed elsewhere. Have had to actually go looking for plutonium a few times, which I don't recall ever having to do before. Nothing drastic, but definitely subtle tweaks to the resource rates.

Still, have already found a planet covered in expensive pearls so they haven't completely nerfed the potential for bonanza planets :)

Yep, there's a lot to be said for the approach, especially given the toxicity surrounding the game. Imagine they'd announced plans earlier on, and in the course of standard development they realised certain features weren't feasible and had to drop, delay or change them. One of the main criticisms directed their way was overpromising, and while lack of communication is undoubtedly frustrating, at the same time there's plenty to be said about delivering updates that contain exactly what they say it will. Action counts more than mere words, after all :)
That toxicity got a lot worse due to Hello Games completely ignoring their entire playerbase.

To not even do 1 post on any social media platform to say "Hi guys, we are still alive and working hard on an update for the game" is inexcusable.

To me it speaks volumes about what they think of their fans and supporters. Its a bit hilarious that people are viewing this has being some cool new strategy to releasing an update.

Very little interest in engaging with this, but against my better judgement I will state...
To not even do 1 post on any social media platform to say "Hi guys, we are still alive and working hard on an update for the game" is inexcusable.

Not entirely accurate. In early September they posted stating very clearly:
What matters now, as always, is what we do rather than what we say. We’re developers, and our focus is first on resolving any issues people have with the game as it is, then on future free updates which will improve, expand and build on the No Man’s Sky universe.

They again tweeted that post out towards the end of September, during which time they had continued pushing out patches as they had indicated.

After their hacking incident last month, they also indicated they were continuing to work on the game ("Back to work"):

    https://twitter.com/hellogames/status/792024895525949440

I do not feel it is much of a stretch to infer that they were indeed still alive based on that tweet also, even if they did not state it explicitly.

They have subsequently delivered a polished update after less than three months development - quite a short period of time for a significant content update to a technically complex game, I hope (perhaps foolishly) we can all agree.
To me it speaks volumes about what they think of their fans and supporters.

As a fan and supporter of their work I appreciated the base game they delivered (while acknowledging the flaws), I appreciate the assured first update they have delivered, and I appreciate that they appear to be taking feedback on board about their game and PR approach (such as the Foundation trailer that was entirely in-game with no bells or whistles beyond a cool soundtrack). I appreciate what they have chosen to communicate has been clear, practical and accurate. I feel little to no ill will towards them, to be frank. Quite encouraged by positive, forward-thinking tweets like this that suggest they want to do right by those who feel aggrieved.

I don't think it's a cool new strategy. I think it's one of several sensible and practical approaches they could have taken given the very particular context Hello Games have found themselves in in recent months.

That's pretty much my entire view on the matter, and very much doubt we're going to find any common ground here :)

I've had my doubts but after reading your post I feel I can say for certain that there is a very bright future ahead for Hello Games :D

Is there any word of PS4 Pro update for the game or do we now assume that since there is no communication about it that they are working on a Pro update?

I wonder what they will do with a Pro version. It looked great on the original PS4.

I think your train of thought has arrived at the wrong station.

They're very unlikely to be working on a Pro version, and instead will likely have all available resources tied to updates to get the game to what it should have been and what they said it would be.

Hell, I'd say if they did announce a Pro update, some people, likely people who never even bought the game, would be complaining about them spending time on that rather than on features for the game.

All the have to do for a Pro patch is but a FOV slider option and unlock the 30fps frame rate, job done. Maybe increase the draw distance.

Wow, I was intrigued by this game and it wasnt going to be a day 1 purchase for me but reading the last few pages have me wanting to back away from the even thinking about going near this game. Is it a horrendous mess or is it redeemable going forward?

Definitely. they were going to be damned either way.

Internet decides games is going to be released October 2015. It's not. Internet throws a tantrum.
Game is delayed by two months from announced date because it's not ready. Internet throws a tantrum.
PC version is delayed by 3 days. Internet throws a tantrum.

Game is released. Some people think it's great. Some people think it's OK. Some people think it's terrible. Internet has a meltdown.

At that point it's pretty clear that anything that's said is just going to offend some people. Developers instead focus on adding content and depth. Update is released. Internet bile continues. Update is criticised by people who haven't even played it.

Really, all you can do in the face of massive immaturity is ignore it and carry on developing and improving the game, which is what they've done.

That's not to say that people who bought it believing certain features were included, which weren't, don't have a legitimate complaint. But that's been a feature of game releases for the past ten years. It's something the industry as a whole has gotten away with, and will continue to do so as long as people keep buying into hype and pre-ordering games. Personally, I think Bethesda's decision to stop providing review copies pre-release (except to friendly Youtubers) is deserving of far more criticism.

I don't get why anyone is surprised any more, or why there's the level of hype and vitriol around one particular title. Though to be honest, if the furore over this is going to cut down the number of people pre-ordering games in the future, I'd see that as a good thing.

I read that Sean Murray murdered Santa Claus and that the staff at Hello Games are currently throwing a barbecue and having Rudolph steaks. Any truth to this?

    Hello Games scandal update:
Murray sleeps nude in an oxygen tent, which he believes gives him sexual powers!

personally I'd hold off for a couple more of these updates - Ive a distinct feeling the game is still a whiles away from the vision Hello Games has for it.

On the very positive side (imo), despite the backlash and furore, they're still working away on it. Utmost respect from me.. serious passion for their work

Id agree the biggest plus from this update is the fact that we know there still working on the game. While i think the update is a nice addition it hasnt done much for the core gameplay so hopefully this is just the start.

Given what they have said in relation to the update they seem to think its a start for them too. It may never reach the heights it was expected too, dont know of many games who could live up to the hype no mans sky had,but at least were heading in the right direction.

I honestly hand-to-heart don't believe the game was ever a irredeemable or worthless to begin with. It was and is a deeply flawed game in many respects, with gameplay problems (not least its heavy focus on mining) that have been discussed at length in this thread. But it was also always a game capable of moments of genuine wonder. It delivered on that core promise to be able to point your ship skywards and take to space. It is a game rich in atmosphere, and IMO works best when you treat it as 'chilled exploration' and ignore the Atlas path.

That said, anyone who was on the fence or actively disliked it first time around would probably be well advised to wait for another update or two before taking the plunge or revisiting. The game is improving, but there's plenty of work that foreseeably can be done, and Hello have openly admitted this is only a first step. The game is only going to get cheaper with upcoming sales too, and even if I do feel there's plenty there for those willing to give it a chance, would also say waiting a while is a plenty sensible option!

I feel the same I'm kinda looking for a reason to justify buying it in my head.

Maybe a free weekend would be an idea?
I felt the same about overwatch and bought it after an hour of trying it out.

A free weekend would be a very good idea for them.

Yeah a demo of some type would be good alright. At full price right now I wont purchase but 30 or less I might pull the trigger and see how it is. I have added way too much to my backlog now.

If the game continues to receive enhancing updates like the Foundation one, I could see it gaining value on the 2nd hand market, and at least holding it's value new.
Plus, if they did something mental, like a VR mode for the PS4 version, it could be the one game worth buying that thing for

I reckon so, get some eyes on it at least, with all the fuss about it I'd imagine a lot of people would check it out.

Why dont you log in to the app and check. That is of course if you even have a ps account.

I just reckon you did have a ps from the amount of time you spend in the ps forum.

VR for both versions, not just the PS4 one would be interesting. I know PC you can use VorpX but even if they just added OpenVR support that would be enough.

I'd say when NMS is one year old it will probably be worth playing with all the updates that should come out between now and then. That's if they keep delivering this kind of progress every update.

Jeez, nice guy. Thanks a lot. I don't use the PSN app. I just buy the single player exclusives when one takes my fancy.

I think Survival is too harsh in some instances. Mainly that you can only land once (not on a landing pad) without having to completely replenish your Plutonium supplies. Makes it very hard to get around.

In fairness, you've spent more time here than anyone complaining about NMS and you don't even have the game, so it's not an unfair assumption to make.

I am not really sure what dots you are trying to connect.

So, because I am critical about Hello Games shady business practices and don't own the game its safe to assume I have no PSN profile

You are aware that this is a game distributed on PC also, right?

I do actually have the game by the way. I just didn't pay for it ;)

No I meant the assumption that you don't have a PS4 even though you do nothing but complain about Sony on the PS forum.

Borrowed from a friend I assume, because a paragon of virtue and justice like yourself would never engage in or condone illegally sourced versions of a game.
