Well , I got my McDonalds job interview coming up next week and I am pretty scared sh*tless. This is my first interview ever for a job as I'm only just 16 (Will be 17 next month). I was surprised to even get an interview my application wasn't all that great (Lucky pick I guess). I have a few questions doing my head in right now.
    1) What should I wear? Would a Plain Polo Shirt and Jeans and shoes be okay?
    2) I am not originally Irish. I do however had a PPS Number and an old passport. Will any sort of documentation be required?
    3) Basically how likely am I to get this job seeing as Im only 16?
    4) Finally just general tips and questions that could pop up

Also could someone explain the tax situation to me .. Because I have never worked in a proper company before and have no idea if I will be taxed or not or do I need to provide some other documents

    1) What should I wear? Would a Plain Polo Shirt and Jeans and shoes be okay?
Best go for trousers to be on the safe side and proper shoes. Better to over dress than under dress.

    2) I am not originally Irish. I do however had a PPS Number and an old passport. Will any sort of documentation be required?
They will let you know what you need in the interview they will help you out with everything.

    3) Basically how likely am I to get this job seeing as Im only 16?
Hopefully you'll make a great impression and they aren't going to be worried about how old you are!

    4) Finally just general tips and questions that could pop up
I would imagine they will just ask the basics so just have some general answers prepared. Don't let not having any work experience stop you from offering relevant examples. A typical question is something like tell us a time when you went the extra mile for a customer obviously you haven't done that for a customer but come up with an example of when you have done something a little extra that someone wasn't expecting. The worst thing you can do is just give no examples every time! What they are going to be looking for is someone who is going to be polite to customers and efficient in their job so shape your answers around showing that, that is you.

Don't worry about the tax situation for now their HR department will take care of all that for you WHEN you get the job!

Good luck in the interview! I've interviewed a ton of people and the fact that you are even looking for this sort of information is a good sign that you will probably do well!

Thanks a lot mate .. Honestly a bit shocked I got the interview seeing I only applied this morning with no relevant work experience. Ill try my best and put together some answers that might come up

This looks like a decent enough list to cover most will be pretty straight forward but there are some in there you might need to think a little bit about first.

Well I've worked for Domino's for 7 years now, these days they don't look at anyone under 18 so you'd want to make sure they know your age and days you are available from the outset.

Apart from that we literally don't ask one question regarding your personality - as long as you don't come across as mental, they'll chuck you in. Remember you're very cheap labour for them and just a number. I wouldn't be worrying about what you should wear because they probably couldn't care less.

^^ Ironically, McDs is one fast-food company that does offer a career structure, including tertiary quals, for people who want to hang around there. I wouldn't recommend it for most, but it suits some people, and is far from the worse place you could work.

Tough work, challenging company culture - but for some it's a good enough living.

And as student jobs go, you get great experience.

    1) What should I wear? Would a Plain Polo Shirt and Jeans and shoes be okay? You coud pickup a cheap shirt and slacks in Dunnes for under 20quid. Maybe a jumper to put on over the shirt. If I was in your shoes I would buy them or ask my mammy to buy them biggrin.png It would look much better and you would probably get a few wears out of them.
    2) I am not originally Irish. I do however had a PPS Number and an old passport. Will any sort of documentation be required? If they asked for it otherwise no
    3) Basically how likely am I to get this job seeing as Im only 16? Dunno

I had an interview with McDonalds the other week and the interview was pretty straight forward, but I still managed to get rejected. There were at least 20 other people at my interview though, which just goes to show the level of competition for jobs these days. Or maybe that's just what I'm telling myself to recover from the shame of not being good enough for McDonalds. :(

Anyway, they didn't ask anything very challenging - stuff like why you want to work for McDonalds over other companies, whether you've had experience dealing with customers, why you think good customer service is important etc. I think the most important thing is to keep smiling and be as friendly as possible so that you stand out compared to the many other people they've also interviewed. And also try to look enthusiastic when they describe to you what the job entails... As a vegetarian, I don't think my enthusiasm was very convincing when they told me I'd be deep-frying burgers if I got the job. :(

    Good luck!

Most likely the hours that you said you were available to work were over-subscribed.

And unless they've changed their cooking methods drastically (I doubt it), chips get deep-fried, burgers get grilled.

I brought a CV just in case, but they didn't ask for it or anything. They had a copy of the online application in front of them so they just look through that while asking you questions. You definitely shouldn't need references yet - not sure if they ask for references at a later stage as I was unsuccessful.

    Quick interview Tips
When they ask you how you are Smile and say that you're nervous.
If they ask why say because you really want the job.

Telling them that you're nervous will calm you and will make it easier for them to write off any difficulties you have during the interview, e.g. not understanding questions or taking time with your responses, as being a result of nerves.

Also if you don't have the answer to a question just say so. Don't try to make one up!
Same goes for questions you don't understand. Get them to repeat or rephrase.

dont tell them youre nervous, they probably expect that youre a little nervous already and you dont need to clarify that you want the job because you wouldnt be doing an interview otherwise.

the best thing to do is to be positive, confident, polite and optimistic and answer every question with either a positive response or a solution rather than introducing anything that could be considered negative. you need to sell yourself to them and make the employer feel that you will be an asset rather than them doing you a favour (although, without being arrogant).

    just my 2cents.

It is basically the same interview with the same type of questions, just with a different person. Best thing is to be honest about who you are and what you want. I work there at the moment and I personally don't like it, but I know some people who really love it and no matter how I feel about the place there is so many promotion opportunities, which is great.

    Good luck.

This is only a seasonal sort of thing .. It wouldn't be my fulltime job for the next year or anything so I wouldnt mind once I'm working ..

One I heard this week (OT) which surprised me was Aldi. It's actually not supposed to be too bad. Reasonable salary and benefits.

Could anyone explain to me what the On Job Evaluation will involve? I tried doing some research but there seems to be different versions in different restaurants in different countries. The automated email I got says it will be an interview and an OJE which will take 30mins but then it says im booked in for 15 mins only. Does that mean it will be just the OJE seeing as I already had an interview with the shift and store manager at the same time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,810 ✭✭✭✭jimmii

It varies quite a lot it will often involve some sort of role playing scenario to see what you natural instinct is like for customer service. Maybe pop in to and get something and pay attention to how they act and try pick up the keys things they want their staff to do. It is normally only just one quick conversation will probably only take a few minutes.

Would the conversation be like the initial interview where I was asked work situation questions or just a general chat e.g availability etc?
Also (Sorry to bother but you seem to be well informed) , what clothes should I wear for it? and how much steps are left in the process and would you say im likely to receive a job now that ive gotten this far? (Shift manager is the same nationality as me :D probably why I even got a second interview)

No typically it would be the other person acting as a customer and you taking on the role of the staff member they just want to gauge how you react to being put in an awkward situation really and how you naturally respond.

Just go the same as before if they wanted anything else they would have said.

Hard to know really I would say like to be <10. It depends on how many positions their are and just how good people were in the interviews. I worked for a company with a similar process and normally it would be 3 or sometimes 4 that were called back for the role playing part if there was 1 position available that would be from about 40 odd applications and 10-15 interviews.

Definitely a positive sign if you are getting called for a 2nd interview. Years ago working in similar envioronment(another fast food chain) we used to get in applications all the time. Seem to be the same situation in retail outlets, I took in 7 CV's today in my current work place even though there are no vacancies advertised. I managed to get my place on the first interview. Other people would also have taken in CV's today.

I had applied for a similar role to the OP online in one of the Dublin Branches of Mc Donalds but heard nothing back. There were only advertising full-time permanent positions in that particular case, the fact that I would be going back to college in september must have thrown them.

Ah well happy in my position.
