If it were me the bear would never have been able to make it up the tree.

He'd have been slipping too much on the sh*t running down from where i was sitting. :D

'Climb a tree to escape a black bear and you'll be fighting the bear in the tree.'

Got a movie clip somewhere of a park ranger in BC on horseback riding away from an annoyed grizzly...trouble is, the griz is catching her up - fast. the only thing that saved her and the horse was the Trans-Canada Highway and a fast approaching truck that put the bear off somewhat. Ursus Horribilis can lope along at around 30mph...up or downhill.

I guess you've all seen this, right?

I read a story a while back. It just made me think of it when i looked at this. The story goes:
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop is larger and has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

Yeah, pepper spray and bells, thats a good one. Browns and griz can climb trees too when young. At full growth they're generally too big to do it very well. But as Tac's post indicates there's a good chance that the brown or the griz will run you down before you get to the tree. I have a .44 caliber bell.

'Sure, you can run - it gives you something to do for the last ten seconds of your life...'

Hunter A and B in the mountains, after a nice Griz, talking about personal protection, just in case of a bear finds them fust.

Hunter A: Whadya got there, a .25cal pistol? You ain't never going to kill no bear with THAT thing!

Hunter B: Don't need to, me. I just shoot YOU in the knee and make my gittaway...'

Millions of bear strories around and sure, they look cute [especially those doing their winter wash] but although they eat mostly berries and leaves, they don't have those impressive gnashers just to impress the girl bears. Leave them alone and you'll be fine. Getting in THEIR place and face can be messily fatal.
