    Well lads,

As the title states im looking for a dry finish matt, paste, gel for my hair.
I recently got it cut up short after years of having it long and i like to keep it tidy but any of the gels or waxes i've used give that "wet look" and i hate it.

    All recommendations are appreciated.

    Thanks

As far as I know v05 do a matt clay, so do Garnier (fructis) My recommendation to you would be to try a water based pomade like Layrite or Sauvecito. Sams barbers in Dublin carry them. They're like a much thicker gel but if you just use it to keep things neat and tidy (rather than sculpt high styles) one tub will last you aaaaages and it's good quality stuff. I'd recommend Layrite personally.

The local barbers i use is looking for €20 for this tub of stuff.. it looks great in my hair but i cant afford to splash out that much on a hair product. Thanks for the reply

EDIT: just did a quick google for that layrite, its around the same price as the barbers stuff so its looking like thats the price im gonna have to pay

I can understand it being pretty hefty for a hair product, but in all honesty OP, you'll probably go through 4 or 5 regular priced stuff in the same time as 1 tub of layrite or something similar. Especially if you're just using it the keep things tidy. All you'll need is about one lump about the size of the top bit of your finger.

I've personally not used sauvecito pomade but I've heard good things. Their grooming spray is great to prepare my hair for te kind of style I do. It's got a cologne kind of smell that's pleasant enough.

That's a decent price but check shipping costs- it may be cheaper to just go in and pick it up in a barbers that stocks it. I buy mine in Sams Barbers and it was €16 the last time I went in. You will get a 'sheen' from these products, but not the same kind of high shine you'll get from other gels and waxes. At least in my experience.

Worked out at €13.50 so i took a chance on it.

I'm using American Crew defining paste, great lasting hold and not in any way shiny. €14 and it lasts ages cause you only use a small amount.

Just seen you purchased a pomade.
Kinda the opposite of what you looked for in the OP.

Sams barbers or search for truebarberproducts ireland, and get some layrite. I love it!

Sauvecito doesn't give a shiny look to it- it's not a 'real' pomade in that sense. It dries to a mate finish in any pics I've seen in anyones' hair. Layrite is what I use and it's basically the exact same formula, and it is NOT wet look or shiny. If anything it's a bit glossy when you apply a lot to style something like a pompadour or a tightly controlled executive contour. But from what I gathered from the OP, he;ll not be using it for that kind of style. I have a bit of layrite in today and TBH you wouldn't really know I've anything in my hair apart from the fact it's neat.

OP, if you don't like the Sauvecito, let me know. I'll buy it off you instead of wasting it.

For those in the know... would you recommend layrite deluxe or super hold

Depends on your hair and what you're doing with it. For most people the deluxe will be enough. It's what I use most out of those 2. The super hold is VERY strong, and unless you're going to be styling a high pompadour, or have thick curly hair you want straightened I'd advise sticking with the deluxe personally.

Layrite is a pomade, and no 2 ways about it, regardless how much you actually use, you will get a sheen/gloss look with it.

I think the OP may be disappointed with what he purchased. Its certainly not a matt look finish.

Personally cant stand pomade type products as I hate the greasy look ;)

Technically, it isn't. It's a thick gel. It's trading on the name pomade, to get business from the rockabilly community that it initially targeted. Honestly not trying to be a d*ck, although I may be coming across that way, but any time I have used similar products (which is a lot, I have a slight obsession with hair products, I have over 40 different kinds between oil-based, wax-based, and wb pomades) I have NEVER experienced anything other than a dry, matte finish with WB. Occasionally you will get a WB pomade that gives a glossy finish, but no matter what the marketing tells you, they are not the same as oil and wax based pomades.

Im sure I can settle this in a few days :) I’m going to pick up some of this layrite and hoping for a dry/matte finish.

I apologise if others get different results that they're not happy with- these things all depend on your hair in fairness. I'd recommend experimenting and trying it out a few times- it took me a while to figure out how to use these products in my hair- I hated Layrite the first time I used it. Now I really quite like it.

Just thought I'd pop back in to this thread- I got a fresh cut today and the barber styled with Sauvecito- here's how it looks, in my hair anyway (applied to dry hair). I have a lot of fine hair. Pics taken by the window with the sun coming right in.

It smells really good, and it's definitely giving a matte/ non-shine look to my hair.

I use american crew fibre. It's great stuff.

Haven't used the defining paste. Is that better again?

    Waldorf job ??

baby and crumble speaks the truth! I got some layrite in Sams Barbers. It's definitely more of a matte finish.

For me to get that slick look I would need to use the entire tub.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭krustydoyle

Got my tub of Suavecito in the post this morning.. 4 days in the post from the west coast of america isn't bad at all.

Will let you know what its like when i use it.

And then you'd have a very fetching hair-helmet.

    ;)

I was looking to buy Suavecito pomade online but it's expensive when you're looking to get it delivered, is this product only available at Sam barbers in Dublin or any local shops?

I only know of it being in Sams. Layrite have a few more local stockists around the country- where are you based?

Cheers, I'm based over the south side of Dublin. I thought maybe one of the local super market would have it in stock.

Nah its a specialist kind of product. You'll only find it in barber shops if anywhere.
