advice needed for new lamp set up, I'm thinking of buying a nightmaster 800 or a x searcher for lamping foxes, this lamp will mostly be used on a 243 and occasionally on a .17 hmr which one would suit best, most of the foxes we shoot are under 200 meters , does the x searcher have too tight a beam , red or white head , or would the nm 800 be better if you have either your advice would be much appreciated

i had the nm800 great light well capable of the the range you shoot.on a good night with top glass 300 yards no prob with the red pill. The searcher is ment to have the edge on it so id go for that one.get the 2 pills red and white.you wont be disappointed trust me.as for the rabbits they are glowing under the red pill

Ludicrous Lumens in the uk do an equivalent at a fraction of the price, I have his mid range on my .22lr which you're welcome to have a look at.

I'm gonna mess it all up and suggest you look at the Wildhunter Predator 800. I was so impressed i bought a second one.

They range out to 240 yards yards with the naked eye on a bright moon lit night, 350+ yards on a dark overcast night and using a scope easily past 500+ yards. I done a review on them a few months back, and have tried them numerous times since. They are everything you'd want and morel. What's best is i charged only one battery since i bought it and while i haven't given it hours of use every night, i'm still using it on the first charge. Soi the batteries hold up very well.

They are being sold on Wildhunter's site for €160 or so, but i got mine in Stakelums for €120. That is the price they are doing them at (however that works). So from reviews i've read on the Nightmaster thew Wildhunter seems cheaper & better.

thanks for that lads , Cass I read your excellent review on the wildhunter 800 a few months ago have you used it much since, when I bought my last lamp a lightforce 170 the rfd told me to stay away from wildhunter as they are not reliable was he just looking for more cash from me, any more info out there on x searcher lads

No he was not wrong. I wouldn't say to stay away from Wildhunter just they are not as good as Lightforce. But here is the thing, that is for lamps only.

The Lightforce 140, 170, etc are better in terms of quality, beam quality/strength and reliability than the Wildhunter. The thing going to the Wildhunter is they are half the price of the Lightforce.

However i'm not talking about the actual lamp. I talking about the torch like the Nightmaster you mentioned in the first post. Here is one of mine:

    picture.php?albumid=2359&pictureid=15128

It's light, portable, comes with all the features, and as said has excellent light both in a focused beam and flooding for all the size and cost of it.

Now if you are looking for a lamp - lamp then look to Lightforce. The 140 is more than enough for your needs. I actually believe my 140 is better than my 170 (i also have both). The 140 is scope mounted but is redundant since i got the Wildhunter.

Cass is completely corect ! If it's a lamp but night force. , I had all three , 140 I found better than the 170 , but the the 240 blitz is un real big and bulky at time but I never leave home with out it .

As for torches , I was buying the nightmaster , but after cass's review I'm going to look into the wild hunter one

I have a light force 170 and 240 but were just trying out a scope mounted lamp to use for the shot and not for locating foxes , any x searcher users out there

I have a modified NM800 boosted to 5amps with an xpg2 red pill. It is a super little light. The xsearcher will out throw the NM but its almost 100grams heavier and the head is a good bit wider too, which means bigger mounts. It doesnt sound like much but every extra bit of weight is a negative. The red takes a bit of getting used to as its harder for our eyes to take in the red light but has advantages too.

And what are these lights like compared to the p7 and the x7r.

The nightmaster and the xsearcher are completely different than a p7 etc. The NM and xsearcher are aspheric lense lights. This simply means that you have no spill whatsoever. You just see a square of light projected where you point it. That makes them useless as a spotting lamp but ideal for scope mount as you have no annoying glare off the moderator etc. The p7 is reflector based, pretty much the same as the common incandescent bulb lights like lightforce. Aspheric lights as a rule have more throw but less lumens than reflector lights. A lot can boil down to drivers and specific pills etc. I chose the NM over the xsearcher simply due to weight and the fact that I wont be shooting anywhere near(at night) as far as the xsearcher can reach. But its each to their own, my friend doesn't like it as he is so used to reflector lights that it feels a bit alien to him. And I must point out again that mine is a modified/boosted version, I have no experience with a stock NM.

I've done a lot of reading into the modifying of the LED lamps at home and while I didn't get as far as doing one myself I did learn that torches like the nm and swear her are over priced for what you get.

Do some more research and you might be surprised at what you get for your money.
